Casseth smiled as his racing heart finally settled down. His fingers moved to grip Lith’s hips as he straddled him. “Compromise is good,” Cas whispered as he let his fingers trail lightly up Lith’s sides. When Lithian leaned down to trail kisses along his jaw, Cas tilted his head to the side, giving Lith better access to his neck, fingers trailing back down and gripping harder at his hips. “Mmm...yes, trying is good.” Cas smirked as he moved a hand up to tangle into Lith’s hair and tug him over for an open mouthed kiss.

Lithian hummed, lashes falling shut, and then laughed — though it was a soft, warm sound — and from there, well, things went as they may. The remainder of their night was spent between furs in gradual, familiar ceremony of mutual exploration, and by its end they slept under the open sky, the fire down to its dying embers, and little more than a grey pile of ash by the time they woke again the next morning. At that point they rose, cleaned, dressed, and ate before setting off again in their search.

Finally, it seemed fate was on their side. Partly.

It was nearing midday at the time, the sun so bright overhead that one couldn’t begin to look at it directly, the light of it all but a single blazing white-yellow glare at the peak of the sky. Lithian, under the ‘shade’ of his cloak, was reminded of the things he liked least about the desert and in a mode that involved immersing his imagination in fantasies of every possible thing to swim in: babbling brooks, dark expansive lakes, great oceans, streams, waterfalls, ponds, the rain. Anything damp and cool, moist and soothing. Anything but this.

Then, through the haze of his mental grousing, he felt a ripple in the current of latent energy about him. Something foreign, but familiar — akin to Casseth’s own magic — and then, that being all the warning he got, a great rumble sounded in the earth followed by a rocky CRACK, and in the next instant, his entire field of vision was filled with brown, glinting scales and a bursting wave of sand. His hastar reared, so suddenly and sharply that even Lithian — an experienced rider by now — lost balance in his startlement and went tumbling backwards, back to the undulating earth seconds later, tangled in his cloak and hair as sand and silt rained down over him.

He rolled, clearing himself from the immediate vicinity of his panicked hastar’s beating hooves and opened his mouth to call out to Casseth, but found himself choking instead on the next wave of sand and dust, tripping when the earth rippled again like a wave.

“Cas—” He coughed again, scrambling back and holding a hand over his eyes as he attempted — however futilely — to squint and see through the dusty gloom. “Casseth, are you alright?”

The heat of the desert usually didn’t bother Casseth as much as Lithian, but on this day the hood of his cloak was raised as well. The heat of the day beat down on them and it seemed as if it was the hottest he’d seen the desert in some time. His wings twitched as he felt a very slight shift in the ground below and slowly felt the ripple of magic, much like his own, travel towards them. He brought his hastar to a halt, frowning as he glanced out over the desert — it was largely undisturbed. Just as he was about to turn to Lithian, to say something, the ripple, in both the ground and magic, became larger and suddenly, a dragon was breaking free of the ground.

Casseth watched as Lithian’s hastar bucked, surprised at the sudden burst of sand and dragon in front of him. He pulled back on his own hastar’s reigns, legs gripping as it pranced around. He growled as Lithian was thrown from his mount’s back and sand came raining down on him. His own beast was forgotten as he threw himself off and ran towards his mate. Already he was pushing out with his magic, creating a barrier of the sand itself, keeping anymore of it from falling on both him and Lithian.

“Are you alright?” Cas asked, hurriedly as he fell to his knees beside Lith and began running his hands over him, checking for any injuries he might have gotten from being thrown off the hastar. “Damn it, I felt that ripple. I should have sai…” The sound of the sand barrier cracking cut Casseth short and his gaze jerked over just in time to see a crack form in the sand and for it to crumble to the ground. Cas cursed as he came eye to eye with two large gaili dragons, ready and angry.

He shoved with his magic, sending a wall of sand barreling down on one of the dragons and shoving it away. He spread the fingers of his left hand, reaching for his axe, at the same time, with his right. The sand from the wall spread, growing around the dragon and trapping it as he took off after the second dragon, axe swinging wide and slicing into its side just as it jerked away. He kept his concentration split, wanting to keep the first dragon busy with the wall of sand while he chopped away at the one in front of him. Another swing ended up as a miss and Casseth cursed again, gaze flicking, for a second, to the first dragon. He muttered to himself as he let go of his magic and took hold of his axe with both hands and swung. He sliced into the beast’s throat just as the other dragon broke free from the walls of sand.

Lithian opened his mouth to assure Casseth he was fine, but given the grit still in his throat, he opted against it, standing instead and unstoppering one of his flasks to call on his own magic. He was weak out here. Pathetically so, compared to when he had the ocean at his back, all open to be worked with and utilized as his weapon or shield. But, at least with his flasks he had something to contribute to the fight, and with the water therein, he did, whipping at the second dragon to get its attention and spreading his wings to dart back and sidelong, guiding it away from Casseth before blocking off the airways of its nostrils and throat.

Three more dragons joined in, but now — with the element of surprise gone — the scales were tipped all the further against them, and together, Casseth and Lithian handled them with relative ease, comparatively. After gathering up the soul orbs in the aftermath and tending to their various scrapes, Lithian calmed his still-jittery hastar and huffed, breathing out against her coat.

“Well,” he murmured, “I for one am ready for a long, cool bath. I think there is sand in every part of me where there oughtn’t be and I feel like I’m gathering layers of it to carry with me.”

The fight between the dragons and the two of them was quickly won and, for that, Casseth was grateful. He retrieved his hastar and brought it back to where Lithian was standing with his. “Bath…” Casseth repeated the word, eyebrow raising as he smirked at Lithian. “That sounds wonderful, hm?” He plucked at the outer layer of sand covering Lithian, picking each grain of sand, buried deep in his clothes and hair, and flicking it out and away from him. “You’re sure you’re alright?” he asked again, moving in close to tug Lith down for a kiss before he even had a chance to answer.

Returning to Ysaride
Once the orbs are obtained, you decide to go back to Marcus, who tells you of the second part of this fantastic adventure.

"So, you've brought me back the orbs. Good. Now we must go to an open field. Meet me there in an hour and we shall begin the ritual." he says with a smile as he stands up and leaves the room.

It is now up to you to meet him in the field one hour from now. How do you spend this hour anticipating his arrival? Explain in 300 words (and a separate post) what you do while you wait for his arrival in the field.

Lithian opened his mouth to respond to the first question, but didn’t get so far as that. Instead, there was a pluck and tug of magic and all the granules of grime, sand, dirt and filth that had worked their way into his skin and hair and under his scales were edging their way out, leaving him with a tingling, freshly scrubbed, openness to the feel of his skin. The sound he made in response was soft, entirely too high pitched, and immeasurably satisfied so that by the time Casseth was leaning in to catch his lips in a kiss, Lith was already shivering, humming, and pressing into it.

Eventually, they managed to get back underway.

Now with the requisite orbs necessary for Casseth to undertake the ritual under their belt, they started immediately back for Taliuma, dropping briefly by their house to pick up the stored orbs that Lithian needed before catching the next boat out. So it was that, just under two weeks later, Casseth and Lithian were back before Lord Ysaride.

“‘An’ open field,” Lithian repeated dubiously after the dovaa leader had dismissed them and they were, again, out of earshot. “Which field? Where does he even…? We were gone for nearly two weeks and he can’t even…?” After a pause, Lithian huffed and then glanced to Casseth, abashed. “It just…strikes me as a little vague, doesn’t it?”

Casseth frowned, glancing towards Lithian and shrugging. “I’m just as lost as you. If not more so. You’re the one that’s supposed to know the Celestial Plane.” He raised an eyebrow as he glanced around. “Should we ask someone?”

“He just left us here,” Lithian stated, trying not to sound like he was fussing, since that was hardly befitting of someone of master status — but failing. “He just…he walked out. Why…” Trailing off, Lithian glanced over to Casseth, finally processing his words, and after a long moment, he sighed, resigning himself to the perpetual oddity that was his dovaa leader and nodding. “I suppose that does make sense…asking, that is. Perhaps he’s done this before and the guards are accustomed to it.”

That in mind, Lithian pushed his confusions and frustrations aside and together he and Casseth started out of the room, asking the surrounding guards until they received more helpful and specific instructions and following those. Some twenty or so minutes later, thanks to the direct advice of those accustomed to Lord Ysaride’s antics, Lithian and Casseth were waiting outside of Astral City proper in a wide flat expanse of green sectioned off within the fields of Aloradhan.

At least, Lithian thought, after days upon days of blistering heat, sand, grit and absolute want of moisture, the crisp breeze, gentle yellow daylight and rolling, lush grasses were a welcome change. Despite the mild irritance of an hour’s wait after already having spent many days out hunting in the in between, of all locations they might have been forced to sit on their heels, this was preferable to a slew of other options. He said as much.

“At least it’s comfortable…and a nice change of view, after so much sand.”

Casseth glanced out over the field, green grass growing for what seemed miles and miles. It was, likely, the most he’d ever seen in his lifetime. He’d had a few glimpses of green in the desert; Vallah’s garden at her shop, the areas surrounding Detraeus and Araceli’s house, the occasional and random oasis in the middle of the desert. Nothing as grand, and seemingly endless, as the Fields of Aloradhan seemed to be.

His gaze flicked around, searching for something — anything — to sit down on. Cas frowned when he could find nothing. It seemed, if they didn’t want to stand the whole hour, they would have to rest in the grass. Casseth huffed, slightly miffed by how they were being treated on this quest. Why on earth were they being made to wait for lord Ysairde? Cas shook his head and took a seat amongst the grass, stretching his legs out in front of him and leaning back, propping himself up with his arms. He stretched his wings out as he glanced up to the sky and frowned.

“So, what now, then?” he asked. “How do we kill an hour’s time while waiting for the dragon leader to grace us with his presence?”

Lithian glanced down, following Casseth’s motions as he stretched out and then humming, the corner of his lip edging up in a smile at his commentary. “Oh, I don’t know…” he said, stepping and turning to move between Casseth’s stretched legs, still standing for the moment. “What ever could we do with our time, out in an open field, all to ourselves, alone in the great expanse of space…” He crouched, his smile spreading as he perched his wrists on Cas’ shoulders for balance and leaned in, kissing his mate’s forehead, then nose, then lips. “I suppose we should behave ourselves at the very least. But other than that…” He tucked a kiss to Cas’ shoulder and then turned, settling with his back to Cas’ chest as he sat between his legs and leaned back against him, “…I am open to ideas. We could play tag.”

Casseth grinned up at Lithian, following his every movement and kissing back when their lips met. He held back a whimper when Lith broke the kiss. He wanted more kisses but before he could so much as move forward to get them, Lithian was shifting and sitting down between his legs, letting his weight rest back against Casseth’s chest. This was good too. He smiled as he brought a hand forward and brushed Lith’s hair away from his neck. “Mmm, tag requires too much effort at the moment.” He nuzzled Lith’s neck, humming happily as he placed a kiss directly below his ear. “I much prefer kissing you in many different places.” He trailed kisses up the length of Lith’s ear, nipping lightly as his arm slipped around his waist, hand resting lightly against Lith’s stomach.

Lithian shut his eyes, relaxing into the touch as Casseth’s fingers brushed through his hair and then shivering at the nuzzle and kiss that followed. He was relaxed here. Happy in this moment, and for this slice of time, nothing could touch that. At Casseth’s words — and the following string of his actions — Lith hummed and smiled, eventually twisting to catch Casseth’s lips in another, proper kiss before giving up, shifting to turn fully, and leaning until he had Casseth on his back in the grass, himself grinning down over him.

“Perhaps we should make that our goal,” he teased, kissing lightly and lazily as he settled himself over his mate, well aware that things would need to remain at least this innocent — preferably more so — before the dovaa leader actually returned. “Kiss in as many places, as many continents, caverns, cliffsides, cities, fields and unexplored islands as we can find…”

They passed their minutes like that. Casually enjoying each other’s company. Trading kisses and words and easy silences like small treasures meant only for each other. Eventually, when figures did appear in the distance, approaching their way, they pulled apart, making themselves presentable until Lord Ysaride arrived. Two teachers which Lithian recognized only as those who worked within the fortress — not having studied there himself — flanked him, both of them carrying with them long, elegant staves which they began to set up as Ysaride greeted them.

Quote:
Ysaride has Arrived
Finally, the hour has finished, and as he said, he was there in the open field outside of the Celestial Fortress exactly one hour after he had said he would. With him were two teachers that you have no doubt at least seen before once in your life. They all worked inside the Fortress after all. In their arms they carried four - what seemed to be staves - in their arms.

"Ah, I'm glad to see you here. Now, to begin the ritual," he said with a smile. "Now, are you ready to begin?" he said.

After hearing your - surely eager - response, he begins to speak again as the associates began to stab the staves into the ground in four points around you, leaving you with a good ten foot radius between each staff. "These staves are the special ritual staves. At the end of each staff is a cup only big enough for a Dragon Soul. Place one dragon soul in each of the four cups and hold one in your hands."

It was now time to begin the ritual.

“I—” Lithian blinked, but eventually settled for nodding. “Yes. I’m ready, we’re both…which of us would you like to…?”

After glancing between the two of them, Ysaride all but immediately settled on Lithian, motioning him forward, and Lithian glanced back to Cas fleetingly before separating from him and stepping up as the ritual was ‘explained.’ On the whole, he was still grossly unclear on what exactly was about to happen, but — having his peisio orbs on hand — he did as he was instructed, moving up to place one each on each of the four erected staves.

“Stand back, hybrid,” Ysaride instructed as Lithian set himself in the middle uncertainly holding to his last remaining orb. “Be out of the ring of staves as the magic gathers. Yours shall be next.”

Casseth grunted, reluctant to move any further away from Lithian. At Lord Ysaride’s words, though, Cas did as he was told and stepped away, making sure he was well out of the staves. He watched, giving Lith an encouraging smile as they waited for the ritual to begin.
