s**t. She'd come so close. She couldn't give up now. Her eyes lifted to where she thought he was, and she tried so hard, so hard to look as close as possible. "Of course I'm not mad at you. I'm sorry. Listen, come here." Her hands lifted, palms upward, reaching out for him. "Come back here to be, and I will look you right in the eye, and tell you that you're an idiot, and I love you anyway." It was the necessity of his closeness that had her reaching out for him. If she could feel his forehead against her, she could do this. She could fake it. She could. The problem, of course, was that when he reached for her hands, they would never move in the direction his would come from. The problem, of course, was that perfection was Maebe's highest priority, and she was failing herself. Hard.

He was beginning to realize, with Tenya's additional observations, that Maebe only ever seemed to look past him at best. Never at. And the more she did it, the less it seemed intentional. As he walked over to her, her arms did not reach with accuracy. When she spoke, it was as if she wasn't being honest. No, it felt more like she was trying to prove something. And not the sort of something he'd originally thought. She wasn't avoiding looking at him. She physically could not. His hands touched hers only because he touched them first. His heart grew colder with fear as he looked in her eyes and realized they saw nothing. "Maebe.." He murmured with a shake in his voice. "....is somethin' wrong with yer eyes?"

The moment he said her name, her eyes flickered closer to where his were. But it was only the sound of his voice that had them focused, and she tugged on his hands to get him closer. "Yeah. I told you, I'm tired." She lied, right through her teeth. "Shh. Just come here. Stop being ridiculous." If he could have felt her heart beating frantically in her chest, as she panicked uncontrollably with failure, her entire ruse would have been up. But there was no outward, visible proof of the rising anxiety. She even controlled her breathing, to soft and even inhales.

She seemed calm. It was her specialty. Acting. But his heart was pumping nervously, as little clues had locked into the puzzle. "No." He kept a distance, only their hands connected. If she could see him, even tired, she'd see him fine from where he was. She shouldn't have any issue with it. So why? "What's wrong, Maebe?"

"What's wrong?" She huffed out, her impatience a familiar taste on her tongue. "You're being withholding, and won't come closer. That's what's wrong. Duh." It's over, she tells herself. Don't make him hate you. Don't turn this into something it isn't. "Nothing's wrong." She replies, the poison bitten back from her voice.

"Then look at me." He insisted, his stubborn nature not allowing him to back down. He'd gotten hold of something, a hint of something, and it was nagging. It was important. Maebe was getting impatient and wiggling out of something. Avoiding something. "But... I said you ain't looked at me. You said that's dumb.. but you still won't.." He grimaced. He didn't want to be right, of course. He wanted it to be something else. He would rather Maebe have actually just been angry. Or afraid. Because whatever he was stumbling onto was much worse than all of that. "So.. somethin' really is wrong." Was it his fault? Was she not looking at him by choice because of him? Or because she could not because of him. Both terrible. One worse. "Maebe, please.." Don't lie to me, Maebe.

She heard the tremble in his voice, and it crumpled her like used up newspaper. She let go of his hands and gripped onto the teddy bear, her eyes clenching shut with anger that she refused to direct towards him. It was too difficult, and he knew her too well, and - and - a million other reasons why this was never going to work. She should have known that. She should have known. When she spoke again, it was with a whisper, muffled by the bear in her arms. "They don't know if it's permanent yet. I didn't want to worry you. You shouldn't be worried. Not until we know."

So it was true then. She couldn't see. Otto took a moment to take it in, but ultimately, what he focused on more than anything? Was that Maebe finally let him know the truth. He let out a shaky breath. Not relief. No, but one less thing was Maebe hiding something from him. He knelt on the floor in front of her, tapping his fingers against her knuckles. He wouldn't say sorry. She already knew that he was. Still... this really was his fault, huh? He'd cry about it later. By himself. Away from Maebe, who didn't need to hear that from him. For now, he'd be a rock. Or at least half as strong as one. "Yeah.. don't worry." He murmured back, a smile on his face she'd never see. "Don't keep me out of it, okay?" He wanted to know, one way or another. Good or bad. And he didn't want her to shut him out.

Her expression transformed into dumb-founded confusion. "You're not, like, going to Linkin Park on me over it?" She asked, genuinely incredulous at how well he'd taken the news. And now that she didn't have to hide it, she dropped the bear and sat there, her expression tilted up at him with slightly parted lips. "I mean, I don't want you to. It's - this is a good thing. I was just." She exhaled shakily. "I was so worried about you."

Otto shrugged. "Yeah well... I'll be a baby about it later. I mean.. like you said. It ain't for sure yet." And as long as it wasn't set in stone, he still had hope. "Worried about me.." Yeah. he could see why. He took the world on his shoulders often. Everything, the sky falling and pollution, all his fault. "I don't want you hidin' stuff like that though. It hurts you, don't it?"

Damn him. Her toes curled and she flopped her head down on the bed, grumbling with frustration. "Nooo. You want me to be more honest with you. I'll die, Otto. I'll shrivel up and die." She reached out for him, missing at least twice before finally wrapping her arms around his waist and hugging him from her limp position on the bed. But since he wanted her to be more honest.. "I'm not actually sleepy, either. I lied." She was. Honesty worked in her favor, when it meant she didn't have to answer other questions.

"Yeah. You lied. Y'know I almost believed you, too. You're too good at what you do." And that wasn't a compliment. He wrapped his arms around her, and he prayed, prayed that she'd be okay. He kissed the top of her blonde head. She had to be okay. There was no surviving on an island blind, was there? Lance got off okay with zero leg capabilities. But he might have been a special case. Never mind all of that. What about Maebe herself? How would he feel if he could never see again? "Maybe you won't always be honest with me, or even confide in me.. and I'll just have to accept it."

She cringed as the words dug deep under her skin, reminding her of something she already knew, but hated to hear. Otto knew too well just how good of a liar she was. She never wanted to be reminded of it. But she always would be with him. "No, I won't always be honest with anyone. I don't lie to you specifically. In fact, I lie to you the least." And that was a lie, but only a little white one, and only marginally untrue. "I don't want you to get used to me lying to you. That's the worst thing I've ever heard. Besides, if you don't pry, I'll get used to getting away with s**t." She poked at his stomach. "And you can't let me get away with s**t. Everything would get weird."

He believed her white lie, and it made him happy. Made him feel like he was special to her. "Well, I'll keep pryin', cause I worry. I just worry I'll pry too far, and make you upset." And not in a good way. Getting her too upset to a point she'd really hate him or avoid him entirely; he feared that most.

"You like getting me upset." She purred out, grinning like a cheshire cat.
