I started playing Violin *cough*fiddle*cough* only six months ago now. ^_^ (was turning 14 in a week.)
I wanted to play because... well... I just thought it was an amazing instrument and I wanted to play something other than the piano.
Well... comparitively, 11? ...I don't know... How would you feel if your fiddle teacher told you that you were "brilliant" on your like... second or third lessson. x_x

I started playing in 5th grade when I was about ten. I heard a profesional violinist and I thought that she was so beautiful and i wanted to be just like that. So i signed up for orchestra at my elementary school and stuck with it. I'm so glad I met her or i would never have experienced the joys of music.

Hm. Bout the fourth grade, I believe. When everyone had to at least pick up a violin. Those damn generic elementary school classes for losers. Anyway, I'd already been playing the piano for about 5 years, so the violin was so easy with only the melody line. First time I had private lessons, though, was the beginning of ninth grade. Now that I'm going to be a Junior in '07, I'm pretty certain that I'm going to music school, since music is about the only thing I like. mrgreen

alrighty then, i started playing when i was about 8 years old (3rd grade) because my parents made me... eh... i actually wanted to play flute or somethin... so yea... um... i've been playing for almost 9 years now and i continued just cuz parents can be scary at times...and well, it's not like they were gonna give me anything else, but i eventually learned to get over the hate of it and liked it... and then Mana (my violin) became mah new best friend...whee... um... lets see... ranking... i'll just say a 14 cuz i finally made it to the top orchestra of the school, and well the whole county (because our orchestra is one of the best in the country...modesty aside)... um... the end! 3nodding

dragon_star_87 This is a kind of research tool for me... ^_^ anyone wanna be a lab rat? No, just kidding. I'm writing a research paper for college, and it would be great to have some statistics. Also, I am curious... How old were you when you began playing the violin? What made you want to play? (or in some cases, who or what made you play, whether you wanted to or not) How would you rank yourself as a player now, on a 1-20 scale; 1 is a 4-year old screeching, 10 is like your average, not-bad-not-good player, and 20 is like Itzchak Perlman or Joshua Bell. You get the idea. btw, if you think you're good, don't be afraid to say so! Fear not the upper half of the scale! remember this is research, so be honest. What I mean is, don't lie to be humble...at least, not here. Thank you! Have fun! I <3 details, but not personal information! I was about 12, I think. To be honest, I didn't actually want to enroll in a violin course. In the sixth grade, my friends were really bossy -_- they wouldn't leave me alone and believed that since they were all taking flute or clarinet or something, I should enroll in a music course as well. So I did, but I chose violin instead of flute or clarinet or whatsoever. Then I got interested in the violin ^_^ and started liking it. I think I'm somewhere from 10-13. I haven't been playing the violin for that long, so I can't be a 20, but I know that I don't sound like a 4-year-old screeching.

10 years ago on violin. I've always been instrested in classical music, and I wanted to play. Then, 7 years ago I started playing viola because I wanted another challenge. And now, I primarily play viola.

I started playing violin when I was three because I heard someone playing on the radio and decided that if they could do it why couldn't I. I'm now 14 and about grade 8-ish so on your scale I would say about 10 or 11.
I started playing viola six months ago as a way of getting out of haveing to do my grade 8 but I really enjoy playing it and it's also a bit more of a mental challenge reading the new clef.

well, I started playing when I was seven, mainly just because I was curious about playing an instrument, and I wanted to try something new. I always liked the sound of the violin, so that's the instrument I chose. I fell in love with it right away, and I'm happy to say that I've been playing for 8 years.
I don't know. I don't want to sound cocky, but I'd rate myself at about a 15 or 16

I started about two years ago. I had heard several recordings and seen some violinists and fiddlers perform. I think it was when I saw Joshua Bell playing for a fourth of july concert in about 4th or 5th grade that I finally decided to take up violin. It was also an exploratory music program that solidified the decision. I would rate myself at about 10-13.

Starting violin was my own choice.
You see, for our district, in fifth grade, you choose what insturment you want to play; band or orchestra. My first two choices were either flute, or violin. I even thought of playing viola or cello. But I decided to play violin.
I started violin at the age of 11, and right now, I am thirteen.
I've been playing for two years.
Well, for my rank.. I'm still in the Advanced Orchestra, in my school, and I am second chair.. [but now I play bass] and yeah.. For Suzuki, I'm on the 5th book. I KNOW, I'M SLOW. Or am I? Is it considered slow if you've finished 5 suzuki books in 2 years? Anyways.. uhm...12?

I think the scale is a little morphed. Isn't there more space between the average-not-so-good-not-so-bad player and Joshua Bell than there is between the really-bad-screechy-I-have-no-talent and the average-not-so-good-not-so-bad player?
