Sherry took another swing, and hit nothing but wall. The clang of metal and stone echoed around her even as the monster landed a blow on her back. Sherry stumbled forward, lost for balance.

Well. That was embarrassing.

Sherry pushed herself off the wall and spun, aiming for the monster again. Her blade connected, and creature began to break apart.

She watched it warily, not trusting it to be fully dead, even if it seemed to it wouldn't be troubling them any longer.

"Okay," she said after a few moments, "Now what?"

By the time Sherry was finished with the monster, Lucky was just gawking, still holding his weapon. He quickly desummoned it as soon as she took notice of him.

"Wow, you're - you're really good at that," he observed, clearly in awe of her fighting prowess.

He grimaced at her question. "Do you like puzzles?"

The next chamber was a dark maze of large floor tiles that were hard to make out. He walked in first, anticipating little danger. He could have done this in his sleep. He'd certainly failed it enough times to know what not to do. "The artifacts are just past this room - but triggering the opening mechanism is kind of a pain. I forgot which one of these opens the right door --"

He paused on top of the tile with a table icon, and there was a subtle 'click' as something seemed to open in the near-total darkness. "Oh."

"Oh, thank you." Sherry had to smile. "I've had some practice." She desummoned her weapon and gave her shoulders a shake. Time for whatever came next.

"Puzzles? I do, I think." She was growing a little bit wary. What kind of puzzles would this place have?

"Oh. Oh I see," she said, staring at the floor as Lucky explained things. She raised an eyebrow as Lucky paused, and Sherry felt a bit of air move. Oh, that was neat. Really, really neat. She'd have to write it all down later. Make notes when she could. For now, they needed to keep moving.

Sherry was careful with her own steps, going here and there, until she was standing beside Lucky. "Is this what you were looking for?"

"This is it," Lucky continued to explain as he stepped into the room, sounding distracted. He seemed to be guided by memory alone. It looked like it might have been a library once - but hardly anything remained of the books but dust and mildew.

All except for one.

The book in question glowed a soft, vibrant green in the darkness, still nestled safely on an otherwise empty shelf. A thousand years or more sunk under the sea and it had not changed or deteriorated even slightly. The details of its cover were hard to make out, though. It seemed as if it were shifting constantly, impossibly, between imagery of trees, snakes, vines, and a goblet. Sherry probably recognized it right away for what it was - an artifact, in its raw form.

"I haven't been here in years... I was still a trainee the last time," he explained, and what little of his face she could see by the green glow looked -- sad? "I got the ring from another room, but I saw this one before, once or twice. There used to be more books in here. At least the only one left is the only one I was hoping to find."

Immediately he reached out and pulled the book from the shelf. It flared brightly for a moment --

And then it was simply an utterly ordinary tome bound in dark green leather, with a strangely detailed ouroboros wrought on the cover in a sickly gold and surrounded by thorny accents. A series of runes lit up one at a time along the spine. Lucky made a noise like air being pulled in between clenched teeth, nearly dropping it.

"Oh no," he mumbled.

Sherry followed close behind Lucky. "This is neat," she said as they passed through the doorway. The mechanisms to put together such a room must be magnificent - the type of thing she'd never fully understand but could fully appreciate anyway. So old, so wonderfully constructed; it was a real work of brilliance.

"So cool," she breathed, eyeing the room. Remnants of shelves, it gave her the impression of a library, or something similar. The thing that really drew her eye, of course, was the glow. A book, glowing green, looking for all the world wholly intact and untouched by the time that had eaten away at the rest of the room. Sherry did see it for what it was. She glanced at Lucky. Was this it? Was this what he'd hoped for?

"Oh?" She was watching him, and it was hard to read his face. What did he recall there, in his first trip here?

"So this is it? Wonderful." She sounded genuinely happy for him, because she was. Sherry looked back at the book. Other books had been here, but the one he wanted was all that was remained? Sherry patted the flask at her hip and wondered just how much Fate played a hand in these things. Or maybe it was the artifacts themselves? Or just silly chance?

She flinched from the sudden light, not having expected it. She opened her eyes to see the book had changed in Lucky's hands. Not that she could have said what it looked like before.

"What's wrong?"
