Sweet when he wanted to be? Riker clicked his tongue to the roof of his mouth, but he was still grinning a bit. It was close enough to a compliment, right? And Cassidy seemed happy about it.
“I’m okay,” he said quietly, not really wanting to lie about how badly he was hurt, but he was doing a lot better than he had been! “Evan is just pampering me. Julian too. I lost some blood but it’s fine. I’ve had worse,” he shrugged.
He really had to stop doing that because with his injured shoulder, he immediately winced. It wasn’t even that bad any more! It was healing up! Sure, Effie had to focus all of his magic on the injury to his gut, but the gash from the Captain’s knife or sword or whatever it was… that was healing too!
“Uh… some injured ribs from CPR, stuff like that. It’s fine, I can get up and down when I want to, and I’ve had so much soup, and Evan keeps talking about how much iron each soup has. But I’m sure you’ve had to eat all the same stuff when you were recovering, yeah? Maybe you can tell me what you’ve had and I’ll give Evan more ideas,” he offered, hoping it was enough to satisfy Cassidy’s curiosity.

“CPR? CPR? Riker, I know that’s when they have to resuscitate you because you’re not breathing. How much blood did you lose?” he gasped. He had to juggle watching where he was going and keeping his eye on Riker so it was pure chance that he even caught the face Riker made when he hurt himself.
“Man, I’m really glad I get to hear your voice and see you but it sounds like everyone’s got good reason to be worrying about you! ‘I’ve had worse’, I don’t believe you! You would have told me!” He huffed dramatically but there was no heat in Cassidy’s voice. He was actually a little worried. Riker was the opposite of him; Cassidy was quick to talk about how badly he’d been hurt but Riker tried to keep it all under wraps.
“I’m glad you’re getting pampered, but.”
He sighed loudly. ““I want to pamper you. Why do you have to eat soup, is it the medicine you’re taking or is your stomach messed up? I have some recipes I can send you. Way better than ‘mashed potatoes’ or ‘yogurt’. I can make you some pasta? That’s easy on the stomach, if you make it with a cream sauce. And I’ve got some enriched pasta back home already, lots of iron. Did Julian say I can come over yet? If I can’t come tonight, let me come tomorrow. I’ll cut class and come visit you.”

“Oh is it?” Riker winced as Cassidy gasped about the CPR slip. Oops, maybe he shouldn’t have mentioned that. It was just getting too easy to talk to Cassidy about whatever came to mind. He would have to be careful about what he said, otherwise he would surely get fussed over more than he thought he deserved.
“Oh, uh… let me try to text him,” he mumbled, glad for a chance to change the subject for a moment. He wasn’t really sure how to get texting to work with FaceTime up, so he was certain Cassidy got to see all of his distressed and frustrated expressions as he messed with his phone. He finally managed to get texting up and typed out a message to Julian about Cassidy.
’Hey, Cassidy called me. Wants to know if he can come over to visit if you’re okay with that?’
Riker followed up by sending a message to Evan as well.
’A friend from school wants to visit, if that’s okay? Just giving you a heads up to keep the cat quiet, too.’
Cassidy knew about the magic. Had been to Sessrumnir. Knew him as Reims. But he didn’t know he was Reims, and Riker was worried about him finding out, especially now.
“Oh, uh… my stomach area kinda got messed up. So we’re trying to be gentle,” he mumbled, switching back to focusing on Cassidy. “But I can try whatever you make. Don’t stress about it too much though. I don’t have that big of an appetite.”

Cassidy walked off the sidewalk twice because he couldn’t take his eyes off of Riker’s face, which was an impressive accomplishment given how skilled he usually was when it came to walking while glued to his phone.
“I don’t stress about cooking. Anyway it’s just pasta, it takes like half an hour.”
He’d have been happy to make it for him now if he wanted it, even if it tacked on time before he got to see him.
“I’ll be careful with what I make you for the next few days–weeks? I want you to heal up quickly. I can’t have you eating anything of mine and getting sick!”
It wasn’t easy to tell where Cassidy was on his path home but he did pick up the pace a bit, optimistic that Julian wouldn’t say no to him coming over.
Riker’s phone buzzed only a second later to confirm as much; Julian answered ‘Okay! I will be home soon, when does he want to come over?’
Evan’s message followed shortly after: ‘I’ll let Soleiyu know but I think he’s going to be out until tonight. Is he coming home with Julian or should I keep an eye on the door?’

Riker gave Cassidy a slightly exasperated look, but tried to manipulate his phone so he wouldn’t hang up on him while also responding to Julian and Evan.
‘Now I think. I’m just about to give him the address. I told Evan too.’ Just in case Julian was worried about getting permission from an adult.
‘Thanks mom. Julian should be home soon, but Cassidy seems to be motivated to catch up. Giving him address now.’
Once he was finished texting Evan, he did as he said he would and sent Cassidy the address.
“Okay, Julian said he’d be home soon, so he’ll probably keep an eye out for you,” he sighed wondering if he would regret this, but Cassidy seemed so eager. How could he deny him?

“Really?” Cassidy lit up again but seemed like he had a brief debate with himself on whether or not he should go home first or if he should try to catch up with Julian. “I’ll bring you presents tomorrow, I just want to see you today,” he decided. Even while hurrying, Cassidy managed not to look too rushed. He might not have known exactly where to go to reach Julian’s house quickly but he figured heading back towards the school and following the direction Julian left in was a good start.
“So you’d better not get tired of me today. I won’t overstay my welcome.” Probably. “I’m going to try and catch up with Julian, I’ll see you in a few minutes? You’d better not take a nap when I hang up!” he teased.
He supposed Julian must have been texting Riker back because he heard the faint buzz through their FaceTime.
‘Okay! Then we’ll see you soon. Text me if you need anything!.’ Another text, but this one from Evan: ‘okay I will clea nso we mke a good impression’, which was not at all an indication that he’d been flustered or was otherwise hurrying to make sure everything was as good as possible to greet a guest.

“Alright, be careful,” he requested, still with a hint of exasperation. And then again by Evan’s obvious flustered response. “See you soon,” he agreed and then let Cassidy be the one to disconnect the call.
That was fine. He had a chance to make sure his hair didn’t look like a disaster, and to clean up a little as well. An excuse of going to the bathroom meant he could check on Evan and also help with maybe shuffling some stuff into their proper places without being fussed at. And he could be at the front door to greet Julian and Cassidy this way.
He wasn’t completely incapable of walking! It was just slower and with some trouble every so often. But he was still a guest there and wanted to help out. Even if he knew he would be told he didn’t have to.
