Blarney's eyebrows raised sympathetically, anguish clear on his face. "Your mom?" he repeated, his mind flickering to Madeline and how much that was so, never, ever allowed to happen to her. "I'm so sorry. Is--did she...is she alright now?" Blarney asked, hesitantly; he'd been kidding about the whole fire-bombing thing, but apparently no, that really was just how Order rolled sometimes. Which, fair - if someone tried to energy drain his sister, he'd have some Molotov-level feelings about it too.

He wanted to ask more questions - sneakier like what? Where else could possibly drain energy? But he couldn't, not when he was casually asking someone he'd known for all of ten minutes if his mom was still alive.

Besides, maybe he could figure some of this out for himself...The Negaverse could drain energy anywhere that people spent energy, probably, and thinking about it like that...Blarney bit back a groan. Suddenly the city seemed absolutely full of could-be-Negaverse-hiding-in-plain-sight places. There was no way Halle was wrong about that; surely they could assemble a team to go investigate some high-potential places around town, at some point, right? Take the fight to them? Maybe?

Maybe. Maybe someday. Maybe if they found out something that could actually be the Negaverse - because they were Order, they couldn't go around lighting stuff on fire just to work their feelings out, unlike some factions Blarney knew.

"She's fine now. The crystals people had brought home turned into normal rocks once the clinic was gone," Halle sat back and gazed up at the sky for a moment. He didn't go into the plans he'd made before the whole thing had turned into a raid, but he did add, "We were lucky, that so many people had gathered together on the same night."

He sighed, "For all that the lack of organization and, well, that we're always trying to be the good guys? For all that we're on the back foot most of the time, when things get bad, our people show up. Lots of them. So things never get as bad as they could. They just aren't as great as we could make them, you know?"

Blarney let out a little breath of relief; if the story had gone a different way, this first conversation was going to get way darker than he'd initially intended.

"We shouldn't have to get lucky about that sort of thing," he agreed quietly, "not when there's, like, people's family on the line." Blarney sighed and shook his head. "I wish that we were better about...like, not only ever having to clean up. Y'know what I mean? Like, we should be taking it to them a little, somehow. But--we're not there yet, I know. Maybe someday," he said with a rueful smile.

"What does your ideal look like? Like, perfect world, if that perfect world does still have to include the Negaverse 'cause I don't think it's possible to like truly eliminate them. On our side, what's the blue-sky thing to aim for?"

"That's no possible," Halle's lips twisted down. "If the Negaverse is still there, treating normal people like herd animals at best? Then there's no ideal, or perfect. It's just whatever is the best possible compromise."

But even so, he allowed himself to go along with it for a moment. "The magic side of things becomes public knowledge. That's the pie in the sky that I think would make things a lot better for most of us. The secrecy we have to stick to makes it hard to organize, hard to make sure knowledge reaches the people it needs to, and makes us really, really easy to harm without any consequences."

He paused and the rolled his eyes, "Of course that'll never happen. We'd end up in government labs or the whole terrorist thing will start up again and go nuclear on us. So like, the more reachable situation? We get some foundation and education in place, we get our worlds and wonders livable, and we start shuffling people to live there instead of here."

Which pretty much meant giving up on Earth in the long run.

Halle gave Blarney an apologetic look.

Blarney blinked. "Again?" He echoed - when had the 'terrorist thing' started up before? How much of the world that he had taken for granted before he awoke was actually magic related? How many stories had been spun to cover up their existence?

Blarney frowned as Halle continued to speak. "But--if everybody goes...then...what about Earth knights?" Blarney asked, his frown deepening. "What about all the regular people who still live here? Like, not just Destiny City, but like, the whole world? We just say so long, good luck against the Negaverse, thanks for everything?" Blarney shook his head - that couldn't possibly be what Halle was actually suggesting. "Or, what, like, take all of Earth's non-magical population and store them away in our Wonders' pocket dimensions?" Blarney stood up, pacing a few steps away - he knew this was his own hypothetical question that he'd asked, and that he didn't really have any business being upset about Halle's answer, but - there had to be a better answer than that.

"Do we have any--like, any friends in the police? Or in the federal government?" Blarney asked, turning back to Halle. "I bet NASA would lose their minds if we could help them do science and stuff on far-off planets and meteors and stuff. Maybe they could get us some--I don't know, protection?" Blarney shrugged helplessly. There had to be a better solution. There just had to be.

"I guess it was a thing years back," Halle explained with a shrug. "People chalked all the magic fighting stuff up to terrorists. Now I guess it's gangs and stuff."

Blarney wasn't taking his answer well, and Halle couldn't really blame him, so he let the other boy have his pace, his upset, and his questions. Not arguing, there was nothing to really argue about. It sucked. It was a bad situation that sucked and wasn't fair. Especially to everyone who wouldn't have an out the way he did.

At that final set of questions, Halle shook his head, "I'm guessing nobody's warned you, but if you leave Destiny City...be really careful about powering up. Like really careful. I've heard the control a lot of it. And that knights and senshi stand out way more than they do here."

Looking up at Blarney, he went on, "Maybe I'm just way too suspicious of people, but I think it's a lot more likely that they are the ones with the friends in the police force, in the government. At least enough to make sure those powers are more concerned with the cover-up than protecting people, you know?"

Leaning over, Halle rubbed his face with his hands, "Nobody wants to abandon Earth. But chaos is bad, Blarney. And not just in the way of going out and collecting starseeds, okay? Every senshi you see? Each one represents an entire world, just like Earth, where every living thing was destroyed by chaos. So it'd be great if that didn't happen again? But we have to be prepared for it to happen again."

He really didn't want to think about the Chaos Queen and the power she could wield. He really didn't know what the real end game of Chaos was here, but it was something that kept him awake more nights than most.

Blarney frowned further. "What do you mean, they control a lot of it? A lot of the entire rest of the world? That's--that can't be right. That's gotta be--like, disinformation or something from the bad guys to discourage us from spreading out." Or maybe disinformation from the good guys, for the same reason. "Halle, what you're saying is--it's bananas. You're saying that--that no matter what education or structure or whatever we try to put into place, it won't matter, because Chaos is just going to overrun the entire planet, so all we can do is figure out the best way to--to what, run away? No. No, I don't accept that. I don't know about all those other planets, but like - they all only had Senshi, right? They didn't have--there's so many of us! That's--it can't be, just, like, a universal extermination event unless you happen to have a Special Soul and an intergalactic bunker to hide out in. No."

There was no way he was leaving his sister behind to get eaten by Chaos. He didn't care if he had to stand against Chaos Queen Becky all on his own about it with nothing but his stick as a weapon - he would not allow that to happen.

Again, Halle let Blarney work through it. Poor guy was getting a lot of information pretty rapidly tonight. Even if he had asked for most of it, there was a lot to work through. And sudden shifts in perspective and understanding weren't exactly conducive to calm thought.

"I haven't heard of any that was just a senshi alone. The world of Lysithea was like, a place where peace negotiations were often held. Dignitaries from all over space would come there, sometimes for politics, but others for its beauty and peaceful culture. Halle, my wonder, was a flowering forest and held festivals and hunts throughout the year."

Thinking of those faded visions, knowing that culture was long lost, Halle looked solemn, "All of the knights, everywhere, died. Most of the senshi died too, if that helps make things feel more equal." Taking a breath he went on, "Ideally, if it comes to that here and now, we'll be able to save at least some people. Unlike those in the past, we know that something that massive can happen to a world. And we can prepare."

Preparation had been key in dealing with the Hollow as well. "Being prepared for the worst isn't giving up, Blarney." He offered up a wry smile, "Be well enough prepared that preparation won't play a role. It's a quote about chess, but I think it applies to most things, including this." Especially this.

"Okay," Blarney said, running through approximately eighteen different responses before he forced himself to chill. He crossed his arms over his chest, tight, like maybe that would help keep himself from getting any madder than he already was. "How do we prepare? Or, like, better question, how do we even decide what we're preparing for? Because like, preparing for a big fight is a whole different thing than preparing all the lifeboats on the Titanic, right?"

"This is why--we need, like committees or something," he said, throwing up his hands helplessly. "We need some people to work on the whole--space snake and other problems part, and we need some people to work on the whole 'people's moms getting whammied by parasitic sleep crystals' part."

Annoyed, he flopped back down on the bench and glared up at the stars, as if it was somehow their fault. Maybe it was.

"Do we have any idea what the Negaverse even does with the energy and starseeds they yoink from people?"

"We're preparing for both," Halle answered, knowing it was pretty unhelpful, even if it was true. "This spring, when we found out about the Calamitous Hollow, we prepared for both. Though," he admitted in an attempt to reassure the page "...we definitely prepared more for the fight. Nobody wants to lose Earth."

Not even the Negaverse. At least until they could get what they wanted out of it.

"I have my theories, but they did...seem to use that energy during that fight. It was, quite frankly, terrifying." He sighed, "And effective. I don't know if we'd still be here without their Queen's pretty devastating attacks."

"What kind of preparations?" Blarney asked. "What do we have to build off? For--for a fight or for lifeboats, but--if nobody wants to lose Earth, like not even the NegaQueen, if she not only showed us those powers but used them and didn't use them against us even though she totally could've, then like...doesn't that seem to indicate we're dealing with two different, like, strains of Chaos? And can't we keep up the peace that came from y'all fighting the Hollow and extend it, pool our resources, and like, just table all the petty stuff 'til we're sure the entire Earth isn't going to get bulldozed? I--I get that like, good guys don't want to accept a world where the Negaverse is allowed to energy-vamp people, and I'm not saying it should be allowed, but like--" Blarney made a frustrated noise and groaned.

"We gotta deal with the big problems first, right? Like, we know that there's more coming. Do the bad guys know that there's more coming?"

"My mom's health wasn't petty stuff," Halle answered grimly reminded the other boy. "Maybe in the big picture scheme of things it is, though. But I have a feeling that's the exact logic they use to take energy and lives at will."

The Negaverse seemed to have that sort of comfortable thinking in spades.

"For preparations, build up your wonder, Blarney. The more work you put into it, the more its magic will help it start to self-repair alongside you. Help other people clear chaos of their worlds and wonders, make them sustainable places. For fights? That depends on the specific fight, so just get stronger, push until you become a full knight and can do more."

Standing up, Halle brushed off his uniform, "There isn't any big thing to fight right now. So don't get so caught up in all these why don't we and shouldn't we's that you overlook the one thing you have the most power to contribute to."

He gave Blarney's chest a friendly, but firm poke. "Get stronger. Get a lot stronger."

Blarney rubbed his chest automatically, even though the poke hadn't really hurt - he knew Halle was right, even though it grated on him to admit it, even to himself. He was getting really, really tired of everyone telling him how weak and un-strong and un-powerful he was, but it wasn't like they were wrong, so what could he do?

Blarney sighed and nodded, then peered over at the boy apologetically. "I didn't mean--your mom isn't petty stuff," he agreed. "I guess...I guess it's just..." Blarney sighed, dropped his gaze. "I guess it's easier to talk about the whys and shouldn't wes when I don't really know anything. But--I promise I am trying to get stronger," he added quickly, "and I am going to my Wonder. I love it so much." He couldn't help the smile that flickered to his face; he wished he could go to his Wonder more often, but, well, that would also come when he got stronger, probably.

He was so tired of not being strong enough.

"Last question," Blarney said, pausing slightly before he asked, "...How do you mean, help clear chaos from other people's stuff?" Blarney asked. "How...what help do people need? How do I help them? How do I even find them to find out what help they need? I mean--I guess the..." he gestured with his ring-hand absently, "but that's not really a place to like put up a 'willing to help fight bad guys in exchange for asking eight bazillion questions' sign, is it?"

"Not all chaos issues are the same, especially in space. Usually there's fights, but there's sometimes like...puzzles and stuff, things that have to be figured out. But like, usually it actually is through Connections. People will put out some kind of notice on there when they need a group. Sometimes it's just word of mouth, and I guess I don't have to tell you to talk to whatever Order people you cross paths with," Halle gave a soft laugh. If Blarney were a senshi, he probably be the Senshi of Initiative.

"And sometimes, you'll just sense a bunch of people together in one spot." Halle shrugged, "Just stay alert and follow the signs, really. Make friends. Ask for help when you need it, too."

"Puzzles and stuff?" Blarney echoed, a frown creasing his brow slightly. Monsters - sure. Bad guys who wanted to hurt people, civilians and powered alike, sure. But puzzles? Chaos could make puzzles? "How..." Were there puzzles waiting for him on Blarney? God he hoped not. Puzzles were so not his jam.

"Well, I hope people know that I'm...you know. Around. Wanting to help. Even if I only have a stick and a can-do attitude," Blarney said with a rueful sigh. "I don't have anything I need help with yet. I don't have enough--like, I'm brand new. All I need help with is figuring out which way is up." Blarney shook his head again.

"There's no--like, organized groups? Like established groups? Even just of Knights, maybe? Like - could you and me and the people you mentioned before--can we like christen ourselves the Organization and History Committee and--like, get together? Make it a real thing? You know all these guys, do you think they'd be on board with that? Everybody could come to Blarney, as soon as I figure out how to take more than one person with me or let other people come on their own. And once I, like, bring some chairs for people to sit on and stuff," he added with a short chuckle. "I just--you're smart. I'm--I don't think I'm stupid. All these other people are probably not dumb either. We gotta be able to make this--real. Somehow."
