Has anyone ever heard of a Roth violin? I tried one that was nearly an exact copy of a Guanari, like 70 yrs. old, had the original (& beautiful) rosewood pegs & chin rest, & was really expensive. I got to play on it for an entire afternoon 5 years ago. It's almost like a first love heart (Am I just crazy)?

My cousin plays on Dushkin (that's a Stradivarius)

He let me play on it once. I felt like snatching it and running away... surprised

WOW eek You are so lucky!! I would be shaking if I had the chance to even SEE a Stradivarius. It must've felt cool to play it whee

When I was "shopping around" for a new violin about 4 years ago, I went to tons of different violin shops and had some flown in from out of state and such to try. However, there was one in a local violin shop that made me want to cry. It was way out of our price range, but.. wow. The tone was so incredibly mellow, almost like a cello. The sound was nearly flawless.

At the time, the one that I ended up with was by far inferior, in my opinion. However, over time, and with playing, the sound has really opened up. It's not mellow like the one I tried out back when, but all the same, it's amazing. We'll be celebrating its 100th birthday in about 7 years. smile

I'll be celebrating my violin's 100th in 2010, about 4 years away. (since 2005 is coming to a close)

I think my violin was made in the late 1700s. Dunno for sure, but I know it's over 100. German violin. Glass. (Not the material, the maker's name.)

I'm jealous of sean McMahon's violin. shes a professional level eighth grade violinist and I'm an Intermediate 7th grade violinist. her violin has such a pretty old world varnish!! and its handcrafted, where as mine is a chinese factory made violin.

While browsing threads in here, I saw a coupoe pictures of a glass violin.

I was jealous from that moment on. Glass violins are so beautiful. Fragile and delicate, but I would love to play a song on a glass violin.

Pretty much anything outperforms the little beginner violin I've got. It's one of the mass-produced chinese jobs.

Actually, the violin itself oddly enough is fair, though the bow stinks, as it's wobbly and the stick is limp.

That's all besides the point, of course. There was a Del Gesu (a fake moderned Giuseppe Guarneri) that I'd always swooned over, but it of course had a pricetag that was astronomical...

Heh... thanks.

Lilewyn, I used a violin like yours for a loong time. If you can make music from it, than you will be even better when you get a good one. That was always my consolation.

Thanks! I'm trying to learn cello at the same time, which constantly surprises me how easy some of the techniques move between the two instruments. While the violin is cheap, it's still imho well made for the price, and also very... ah, intact. I've yet to have an accident resulting in even a minor ding, which given how klutzy I am surprises me to no end.

The cello, on the other hand, was owned before me by a former coworker who tried to use it in a rock band (feel free to wince) and before that by a minor orchestra player. It's seen a few years and has more than its share of dings and scratches, which I've been very, very carefully touching up over time, and I've had to remove the cheap paper stickers and vinyl that mr. rocker put on it.

Hint: Goo Gone can be diluted pretty easily, and rosin powder (which seems to accumulate by the centimeter next to my violin's bridge as I play, somehow...) makes a good crack-sealer for cello varnish. *nod* Just gotta buff it after it sets.
