Question...do you believe they work or no...I have a set of cards...and one of my friends that is "trying" to be wiccan has like 5 decks. Also isn't it true that if you have one deck that you are truly dedicated to, that deck works better?

Forgive the late reply to this .. I just got accepted to the guild, after not realizing it had changed places for quite some time. sweatdrop

I know they work, however, some people are stronger with them than others and not everyone will be able to make them work. Personally I am not the strongest with them, but my fiancee is extremely good. It's not that I have a weaker set of cards, it's that I'm weaker with them than he is.

Usually tarot are best if given as a gift. At least, from what I've heard. You're supposed to carry them around with you for three or so days in order to attune them to you and in that period you should be the only one handling them. Get to know the cards and the personality of the deck, and practice with them. Different decks do have different feels and they will react differently.

Personally I only have one set of decks, but you can pick up more than one. Some sets of cards get jealous though and don't like sharing owners. wink Starting out with just one seems to be the better idea though. If they don't work, you can always pick up another but you should take the time to get to know one set of cards before you pick up another. Mine are generally helpful, and I really haven't thought much about picking up a second deck because of that. (Plus no one's offered to buy me another set). They have a tendency to get annoyed if someone repeatedly asks them the same question though.

I have a set of totem cards and a set of oracle cards as well .. but they don't seem to conflict with the tarot cards, as they're all meant for different things.

heart I love my Rider-Waite deck. It looks so old .. even though it's not. Plus the stuff I usually keep it wrapped with smells great.

lol. I have a mini-one that came with my deck that I use for the most part. It has a short explanation for each card, and I base my readings off of that.

I read tarot professionally for a few years, but now I'm taking a break from the business portion of that. It can be easier to focus on one deck when you're learning, but you have to be careful not to rely on that one set of symbols as a crutch. I'm guilty of that at times! I have one deck that I like the most.

Impressive.

Don't you have to get certified to read professionally?

You don't "have to" get certified for any legal reasons, but it does help get customers! I am a CPTR (Certified Professional Tarot Reader) through the American Tarot Association, and I have a few more certifications through lesser known organizations. razz

Ah. ^^; I heard someone mention it once, wasn't sure if it was mandatory or not.

Tarot! Now here's something I can relate to.

I've been doing Tarot readings even before I showed the slightest interest in Wicca. I picked up my Radiant Rider-Waite for $18 in the bookstore one day, and got right to it.

I know you're supposed to feel bonded to your deck, and I do. But I also feel the need to...pamper my deck. I keep it set on a high shelf, wrapped in silk. I handle with the utmost care...TOO MUCH care, I say.

When I do readings, I usually stick to the Major Arcana. I know I shouldn't do that, but they speak to me more. The Minor Arcana is also quite confusing because I am always getting the court cards mixed up. XD

tarot's pretty cool, tho i havent found a deck that is mine so much yet. moms came to me for awhile, but then they went back. right now i have oracle cards, and i know that once you've attuned yourself to them, you can use others that are similar as well, to get a more detailed reading. of course, thats not always necessary.
not sure why cards being a gift is better, just know that it is.
also, there are some decks that you will work better with. depends on what theyre based on.
anyways, i know this is reaaaally long time after the last post, but im going thru pretty much everything so, there will be alot of them razz

I have a deck I've had for a while that works very well for me. I still have to look to the book to see what they mean though.
