Luna was 13 at that time and she wants to avenge her family. When she was 15 Malecifent used her as a pawn to search for someone with VI in their history. Unsuccessful she was "disposed" of. But she made it back to her home with hardly any Heartless. She's skilled with magic after being trained by a powerful sorceror and she most excels in Fire magic.
