You know the best way to learn how to answer these types of questions? Work in sunday school with kids under the age of 10. You'll learn simple-worded explanations and tons of analagies. 3nodding

What do you mean by "free will"? (there are different degrees of "free will")

By free will I mean that we choose our own destiny. We make choices and it's not predetsined for us.

So people have this idea that God had our every move planned out before we were even born, like the Puritans. They basically believed that God had already decided who was going to Heaven and who was going to Hell before they were born.

So the question is do I decided to go party it up and have sex and get drunk? Or is it already written that I'll do that?

Check out the scripture about God hardening Pharoah's heart as well, that raises some good questions.

So basically it's do we make our own choices or are they alreday decided for us.
I think that God knows what you're going to do. By the way, this is a difficult topic to discuss (for anyone) and hard to comprehend (for anyone), so it'll take a while to understand. Maybe we have limited free will (one of the many degrees of free will), we do make some choices but our sinful nature can take over (i.e: getting drunk and having premarital sex), but ultimately God's plan is what works out. (OMgoodness, this is so hard to explain sweatdrop )

ISN'T IT THOUGH?

We had this exact same debate at my church and we were all like... um.... uhhh... eek

I don't think it's something we'll ever completely comprehend, I just wanted some input from y'all.

As humans, we tend to look at this subject wrong.

For the most part, we humans will look at this and either see 'Godd dictates our actions before we do them' or 'God does not dictate our actions before we do them'. The problem with this is that, in both statements, we limit God.

So, the next time you ponder this question, try to remember that it's not that God knows what we'll di before we do it, but that, to God, we have already done it.

Which actually makes more sense, because Jesus died for the sins we haven't yet committed as if we already had.

"God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players,* to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.
---
* i.e., everybody."

That's a quote from Good Omens. It's really a great book, absolutely hilarious.

I think that quote pretty well describes God's plan.

My thought... God's will is optional. Is it God's will that anyone go to hell? In His ideal world, no. Yet it happens, because our Lord is judge as well as friend. God DOES have a plan for us, each and every one of us. Not everyone follows it. In fact, some people willingly look at God's plans and dismiss them. Some are on a parallel path, but can't see the true way that God wants them to go. Thus, free will.

In general, I think so... we seem to have a few different details in all our theories but we seem to all agree we have free will... hahaha
