Haha, kewl! I haven't really done DIY, but I want to start. This looks pretty useful, especially the bit about the sewing machine. I just got a backpatch and my mom INSISTS that denim is too thick to use a machine.
you don't need to sew it on. i actually used fabric glue to put my back patch on my denim jacket - you just have to let it hange over a sink or tub to dry, cuz a dryer will make the glue come apart.
