A pair of yellow eyes slowly and surely opened, first one then the other. At first Abhaya wasn't sure her eyes were opened at all. It was pitch black. She did not know if this was or wasn't how the world was. In fact she had no former preconceptions of anything really. Only somewhere an inborn instinct told her that when eyes opened they should be seeing something. Coupled with this her ...nostrils...began to flicker and then before she knew it there was a sharp pain in her chest as if she needed something she couldn't place. It hurt more then anything and finally her body responded and it was in that moment that Abhaya took her very first breath.

Then came the light, the light which cause her squint and her eyes to hurt. Next came the voice, the first one she would ever hear.

" I know what you are thinking... that is... if you were capable of such complexities. For now, you do not understand even what I am saying to you, but you will. You do not understand learning, love, life.. or fear.... most importanly fear."

She did not know what the words meant, though she only knew the feeling it brought her. Unnamed feelings. Abhaya did not know what they were or what name was meant to be attached to them, she only knew that it made her curl into a little ball and the feelers on her head twiched and vibrated while the hair fuzz on her body stood on end. The rest was a blur, a blur that she could not remember nor even begin to try.

Resting on Abhaya's window, soaking up the rays of the sun, is a brightly colourful sunflower. It rests in a clay pot, on its own and looks fresh and vivafied. The flower appears to enjoy the suns rays.

The flower is actually animated, more alive if you will. It proves this by singing each morning when Abhaya awakens. It has a feminine voice and likes to sing melody. It will also dance to music, wiggling its stem and shaking its leaves.

When Abhaya first awoke that morning she heard the softest noise of a cry coming from somewhere she was still too groggy to name. The child tilted her head slightly and rubbed two sleep encrusted eyes before blinking slowly and then looking about the room. Suddenly she pinpointed it and let out a small shrill squeal of surprise. It was a pretty little sunflower! As if on cue the feelers on her head began to swivel back and forth as if wanting to force her to get up and go over. And who was she, but not to oblige? So throwing her satin covers off her body the young caterpiller girl made her way over to the windowsill, yellow eyes gazing at the flower intently.

She leaned forward and sniffed in, her nostrils drinking in that wonderous wonderful scent. It smelled so very nice and it was then that Abhaya realized that it was the flower that was singing so sweetly. She giggled and then reached out a small hand to touch the yellow petals. The flower moved back and stopped singing all at once. Frowning slightly the child took her hand away.

The flower began to sing again.

Abhaya was fine with this. Her hands were better kept elsewhere, like in the air for instance. While she swayed and hummed along with the music.

Oh what a glorious way to wake up each morning.
