They're all related. Luffy's related to a certain someone in this other than Ace, his grandpa and Dragon. I know how it ends, so i don't really want to spoil it for everyone, but that's the most i can give you about it without spoiling a big thing in it......

D could stand for something you give to a person of fame like Luffy a 100,000,000 beli bouny, Gold Roger, The one giant dude from Robin's childhood...

I was thinking the D could stand for 'dream'. Because Gold Roger had a dream and it was big. And Luffy has a D in his name and he has a big dream. But I could be wrong... pirate

The Dream theory is alright....but I hate to keep telling everyone somethings wrong but.
If it stands for dream then surely the rest of the Straw Hats should have a D. in their name?

i think Gold Roger is Luffy's great grandfather or uncle or something. He has D. for his middle name he might be realted to Luffy and they both act the same like out Roguetown when Buggy was about to kill Luffy. Smoker even said that Luffy smiled and laughed and accepted death just like Gold D. Roger did

D is their family name.
just like Gold D Roger and that giant on the island that robin was born on.
His dad as D in his name and his Grandpa also has D in this name.
