She eyed the gallant phoenix as they walked, listening intently to each word. Her heavy feet beat down the grass as she took her long, almost manly strides. The air was becoming warm and though she paid attention to the path they were creating, she had no idea where it led.
"Yes. From the day I came into being, I have known this place." She looked around, admiring the pleasantries of the valley. "I have not kept only this valley as my residence though. I have travelled to the mountains and into the wood as well. My herd is very spread out so there are many places to go without truly leaving it. It seems that many of us just simply prefer to be in seclusion from one another." She gave a heavy sigh, as if almost sad that the world had to be such the way it was. But no matter. It was how it was and probably wouldn't change. "And yourself? How long have you graced this land?" she very intrestedly questioned.

 He pondered her question a moment. "Truth be told, I've never seen these fields. I come from a place deep into the mountain pass where the wind is as ice, and the ground is frozen. It's white all the time."

"I have heard of such places but not had the pleasure of visiting them. I usually keep in the warmer areas. I love the radiance of the sun." she said as she lovingly gazed up at its bright rays beaming downward.
"Besides," she continued, "I had my children very soon after arriving here and until just recently, they stayed close by. They are very independent and spend most of their time with one another. But that is how I raised them and that is how they like it."

"I was expected to stay and sire children, myself. But the mare chosen for me would not have me. Which is fine, as I was not interested in her, either. So, I left. Of course, now I may not return as I have discrased myself." He did not sound the least bit saddend nor sorry for it.
"It is rather pleasant here, isn't it? Peaceful. And quite colorful."

Puzzled at his statement of his chosen mate, she shook it off for the moment. "Yes, it is rather lovely here. There are some dark places though. I've heard stories on the wind about them but never had the displeasure of seeing them with my own eyes."
Sighing, she replied to his comment, "The father of my children was well-chosen but a little too fleeting I'm afraid. It was by sheer chance that we came together and have since not seen, nor heard, of the other. The siblings of my children stay in a different herd; with their father I assume."
She shook her mane and flicked her tail. "If I am not intruding by asking, how is it that you have disgraced yourself if she was the one who wouldn't have you? If a mare chooses not to be with a fellow, should it not be her that is the disgraced one?"

He looked over at her. "It is complicated. There was another that she would have. He challenged me for her. Rather than fight for what was already mine, I just... left. Let him have her. And even though my intentions were well met, as I knew the mare since childhood, and all I wanted was her to be happy. But the elders of our herd did not see it that way. They saw me as a coward. Unfit to sire. After all, if I had not the courage to fight to keep my mate, how could I be expected to fight for my children?"
He snorted in a sigh type of way.

She stopped. Her strong legs stood firm in the cool air and tall grass. "But...that is still not right." She shook her mane with a rumbling grunt and flicked her tail in irritation. 'The nerve of some creatures!' she thought silently to herself. "If it were the best thing for her, then one might thing that those elders," she said very sarcastically, "would see it that way also." She stomped a foot it sheer disguist. She almost had pity on the frozen pheonix.
"If anyone ever told me who I was to be with, I'd informed them that they are sorely mistaken. And they might get the wrong end of my hindfeet if they want to make something of it." she announced with a tromp.

"It is just the way things are done where I come from. Maybe in a few generations, things will change, as more and more of us wish to find mates of our own and not have them chosen for us." His mane quivere as he spoke.

"Well, I am certainly glad that I come from a place where anyone is chosen for me!" She reared up an whinnied. "And if I did, I would find a better place....just as you have." she finished with a giggle-like grunt.
She admired how the day was turning out. What a day to meet such unexpected a friend...then she remembered her rudeness before.
Shly, she humbled herself and said, "I can't recall if I apologized for my horrid actions earlier today. If I offended you, I am truly sorry." She stopped as if to gain his full attention. As her eyes locked with his, she opened her wings, lay one foot bashfully forward and stooped down in a honorable bow.
"Next time I meet a phoenix, I will remember this day and guard my words."

He bowed his large head in respect. "I accept your apology." He raised his head once again and looked around him.
"This place really is interesting.." He said once again. "It amazes me still how big it is. I can just see some movement off in the horizon. Would those be the others you spoke of earlier?"

Squinting in the sunlight to focus her keen eyesight a tad better, she looked upon to far horizon. Curling up her nose in an annoyed grunt, she answered, "Yes...unfortunately."
On the far hill to which the pair gazed, like tiny insects they trotted here and there. "Those must be the foals. This is place is crawling with them. They usually stick to larger groups though, so they can bounce around and irritate the adults. And for whatever reason, their parents let them!" Larger yuma grazed among the tall grass that waved like an emerald ocean in the gentle breeze. A flicker of rainbow-colored fur and similarly adorned phoenix tail feathers. It was Chromaticus, a known fairy-phoenix who pranced around the herd like he was something special.
"Look there," she flipped a wing towards the brightly colored yuma in the distance, "there is another phoenix. He is part of my herd, although I avoid them at cost."
