Prox's journal
Through various means, I finally saved enough to approach Dr. Sabin about an appointment. The child will be, perhaps, a little fuzzier than most. That's never bothered me, though. I lived in furry worlds for years.

Arri's expression when he came home and I told him was beautiful. I don't get to see that smile enough.

Time to prepare for having our sleep interrupted at odd hours and having no privacy for another who-knows-how-long. Children in Gaia seem to grow so much faster than children in other worlds. Will the baby grow at that same blinding speed, or will it be a slow unfolding the way human children grow? I think I'll be selfish and hope it won't be too fast.

Prox's journal
Five minutes. That's how long we were at the shop. I nearly stopped breathing when we came back to find that the egg wasn't in the nest where we'd put it. Five minutes!

Orca and Anen had it, it turned out. It seems to have been Orca's idea. Anen tried to tell me it was his fault, but he doesn't lie well, and admitted it after a few minutes. (I notice that both of them seem to lie only when trying to cover for someone. I'm not sure what to think of that.) Needless to say, Orca's grounded for some time, and I've dug the baby carrier out of the attic. The egg will be with one of us or someone we trust! More of a scare than I like. Not that I ever like that sort of thing.

It gives me a slightly better understanding of why my father did what he did. I wish he'd survived to bring me home, but ... I would do the same for my child. For any of my children. If it became necessary. I hope I never come to such a place.

Anen has long since gotten used to not having to look up at people, except the occasional demon or alien in Barton. However, the two lion-men on the doorstep are huge. The shorter one with the golden mane is as tall as he is, and the one with the black-tipped mane is not only nearly a foot taller, but considerably larger and more muscular as well.

"Um, hello?" he says.

The two lions look at each other, their expressions saying quite clearly that Anen is not at all what they expected. The larger one offers, "I'm looking for a feline named Prolixity ... we were told he lives here. Do we have the wrong address?"

"Holy s**t, I recognize that voice," Prox says from the loft. "Riptide, is that you?" He nearly runs down the stairs. "Come in already, guys."

Anen blinks and moves aside so the lions can duck inside. Obviously the appearance of the two huge anthros on the doorstep is not somehow a mistake, particularly since they're now engulfing his father in an enthusiastic hug, and there are muffled and incoherent happy greetings. He shrugs and goes back to the kitchen table to continue trimming the bonsai he was working on.

"Odd roommate you got, striper," the taller lion says behind him.

"Roommate - oh, lord, introductions are in order. Anen, these two monsters are Riptide and Anemone - "

"Karth and Teran," the smaller lion corrects. "We went civ and took our names back, remember?"

"You never told me your civ names, and I reserve the right to call you whatever I want, anyway," Prox says, unphased. "Karth and Teran, okay. They're old friends of mine. Rip, Nem, this is my son, Anen."

Anen leans against the table and nods to the lions, suppressing his curiosity for the moment and watching them give each other a rather stunned look. "Holy crap, striper, you have a kid? Quick work," the bigger one - Karth - crows, and catches Prox to give him a noogie. Okay, Anen thinks bemusedly, so that's where that came from.

"Married, four kids, another on the way," Prox grins, ducking out of the headlock in a move that speaks of long practice. Karth and Teran share another quick glance, and then Teran breaks into a grin and holds his hand out to the larger lion. "Pay up."

"Oh, no way, statue of limitations has long run out on that one," Karth protests.

"What are you talking about and do I get any of the money apparently changing hands here?" Prox raises an eyebrow.

"I told him that one that one day you'd settle down and go domesticated," Teran explains, looking unrepentant. "Karth said no way, he couldn't see that happening. Ever. I bet him ten bucks." He turns back to Karth. "Pay up, fuzzbrain."

Prox snorts. "Two things. One: I was sixteen. People change. Two: You try keeping four teenage males under some semblance of control and then come back and call me domesticated. I dare you."

Anen starts laughing. This reminds him of himself and Devi, in a weird way. The lions look at him, then back at each other. Then Karth grins and says to Teran, "Owned. Pay up." He looks back to Prox. "You got beer anywhere in this huge house of yours? You have a lot of explaining to do, striper."

"I expect I do. And baby pictures. Thought you were going to escape, didn't you?"

"Domesticated. So domesticated," Teran laughs.

Anen ducks his head to cover a smirk. If he's lucky, they'll go out and sit on the patio within earshot, and he'll hear all sorts of interesting things about his father.

Rip and Nem appeared on the doorstep today. I hadn't expected to see them ever again, so it was something of a shock, if a good one. They say they've gone into business for themselves in interworld trade. I gave them a few contact names from the worlds I know. They had two already, but were pleased to get the other references.

Their families would have nothing to do with them when they returned from the Feral Preserve. That's not any more than they expected, and I couldn't detect any hint of anger over it. It saddens me slightly, though. I guess I put a lot more importace on family these days. Natural enough. They're family to each other, and I guess that's all they need yet. - I can't see them setting down and being domestic either.

There's some grain of truth to that accusation, I suppose. If I look back at who I was when I arrived on this world, I guess I have changed, settled down and become - what? It's been a very full year and a half. I refuse to accept domesticated as an accurate descriptor, though.

Prox's journal
Arri fell asleep on my lap while I was checking the egg this morning. He's been working strange hours lately and not getting enough rest. Someday I will manage to get it through his head that he needs to take better care of himself. Maybe.

It was peaceful, though. We don't get enough simple peace, and so I just stayed still and let him sleep with the warm pulse of the egg against his cheek. I think I started to fall asleep myself.

Then there was a camera flash. Kher had taken a picture. "It was cute," he said, and laughed. I tossed a pillow at him and told him to have some respect for his elders. Not likely in this lifetime, though. I expect that there will be small aquatic grandchildren if he and Ruse ever get their finned hands on a Blood Rose. What a terrifying thought.

I've been childproofing the house. The breakables and small objects have gone back into storage or onto shelves too high to reach. It's sort of astonishing how much work it's taken. It's been months since there were children young enough to require constant watching in the house.

Note to self: vacuum under couches. No, vacuum under everything. Have to assume that the baby will have some kind of shifter-form that will be small enough to drive us up the walls by hiding under anything that can be hidden under. That's another terrifying thought. How did Mother deal with me? I wish I could ask. Do any of the other Guardians or GMFC parents have shifter children? I should find out. Better to plan for it ahead of time, just in case.

Oh my god. Names.
