The time travel thing is always tricky. I think that the theory of relativity thingee posted earlier (that matter becomes smaller and time goes faster as you approach the speed of light) isn't really time travelling, just kind of tricking the system, since you couldn't go backwards, just forward, irreversibly. Plus, humans might not even make it that far technology-wise. I love all the cool discussions we have here smile

PS. Do you guys like the new hairstyle? I know it's kind of frivolous, but I've been getting mixed answers.

Sure you can go backwards in time... just face the opposite direction! XD

Seriously, though? At the rate that humans are discovering technology, it wouldn't surprise me that in say... 50-60 years they found some method of traveling faster than light, or going back in time... Hell, look at what we did to computers and the internet! We evolved the computer from a text based, number oriented machine to an everything machine that can communicate to other like machines on the other side of the world in a split second!

Normal time travel isn't tricking the system?

If it is going to be possible to travel back in time, then we have all felt the effects of that some how, however, we have no idea that it was caused by time travel. The reason we can't know that time has been altered, is because we don't know what things would be like if someone in the future hadn't traveled through time. ...Bleh. I can visualize this stuff in my head, but explaining it is so much harder.

If it already is possible to time travel, then it is no surprise we don't know about it. It's the kind of thing that would be a top secret government operation, so of course civilians like us wouldn't know.

To even begin figuring out how to travel time, we need to really understand what time is. Time is the 4th dimension. Human kind has already discovered many advanced ways to travel through the 3rd demension. It was said earlier that time is a steady, constant flow. What we need, perhaps, would be to figure out how to bring our 3-demensional bodies into a 4th demension stream. If that's even possible, all we would need to do would be to let time take us forward to the desired destination.

Time travel is impossible, none of you have even begun talking about parrallel universes, which is bi-product of time travel. When you fall out the stream of time, you go into a parrallel universe, because that is where you are affecting. If you were to affect the same universe, a paradox woulc occur, because you can't move speed forward around one person. Not even Walt Disney.

Yeah, but it's still fun to speculate. smile

What? I thought Walt Disney was magical! *emotear*

Anyway, parallel universes can be extremely confuzzling, because of their subtle differences in the worlds. I believe that you can't have two universes that are carbon-copies of each other, because then there would be paradox.

P.S. parallel is only one "L"

PPS. Speculation is very fun... XD

Just for that, I did a new thread on parallel universes. Although they interconnect, they're still very different.

Don't worry, I'm just as confuzzled as you guys smile Glad someone likes my new hair, too 3nodding

Of course time travel is possible. It's done everyday.

What is memory but traveling back in time? Your physical body isn't moving, but your brain is. It's sending little nerves and electrical impulses into overdrive, pulling up memories. When someone remembers a time they were in pain, and feel a shadow of that pain, they are traveling back in time. Sure, it's only a shadow of the pain of losing your leg, or breaking your arm, because the body cannot replicate the pain without causing trauma to the brain and body. The brain is smart enough to know this, even if the person using the brain isn't.

What about frozen eggs and embryos? They are held in a static state until such time as they are needed. That is time travel-- it just isn't time travel as we think of it, in a "jump forward/backward at will" aspect. For those embryos and eggs, years can pass without there being a change. Being chryogenetically (spelling?) frozen is becoming possible, and for that person, they would be traveling in time. They would lay down, and reopen their eyes, and it would be years in the future.

That's a very interesting way to put it. I never quite thought of it that way. I bet no one else did, either smile

I actually did think of it in that way, but with a different application: Photos. Whenever you take a photograph, you are essentially freezing a moment in time, to be looked at at a later date. The same can be said for videos and movies. Different method, same idea.

Unless the photo or memory is destroyed, you are essentially immortalizing yourself, even long after your death. This is why art costs more after the artist dies. Wow, I'm thinking along lines that I never thought would intersect... well, that's why I started this. Anyone else have something more to add?

I heart this guild biggrin
