Not sure if this is the same for every mochi out there... the type we had was what the Japanese exchange student (went to Tokyo U... somehow got to be friends with my (then) teacher) had made herself... it was grainy feeling, but rather sweet... kinda like a big block of sugar... it wasn't the super-sweet attack that you get from eating plain sugar, though... it's hard to explain... but it's really good... *not sure if that's what every mochi is like or not, though*
