Because Takayuki Yanase is involved, that's probably why. He's known for his rather Katoki looking, but more surrealistic designs.

If it weren't for the fact that the absolutely gigantic black casings attached to either shoulder of the Virtue actually SERVE A PURPOSE (either a triple-barreled weapon or triple-funnel thruster in either, time will tell), I'd say that the design was needlessly big. It still is big, but not needlessly.
The Kyrios transforms? Nice to know, Mr. Press Release. I couldn't tell, what with all the WING AND SUCH COMING OUT OF IT AT ODD ANGLES...
Dynames is just another Buster Gundam, which was just another Heavyarms; obligatory modern-military-esque artillery Mobile Suit.
Exia is Sex-ia...I like the idea of a primary Gundam that fights only with swords, and has seven of the things (although I would like to know why all it's beam sabers are facing out backwards, the ones in the shoulders look hard-to-reach).
The mecha design is different. Different for Gundam. But, then again, so was every other AU series, from G to TAG. This is a good thing. I got tired of Cosmic Era design after everything ended up becoming little more than remakes of older suits and remakes of even-older suits from other timelines.

I still don't understand the concept of "thicker armor providing better protection"... No matter how thick, it'll melt like butter against a beam weapon... (Which seemed to be the norm in Double-oh) Besides... The Virture already have a force field! What is the actual point of armor!?
The Exia seems to be a electronic warfare unit... That's a first for a protagonist machine... (F90 had a mission pack for that, but was never field.)

Barsona First episode is out, but to me... it's sorta telling me that it's like another Gundam Wing... Hmm, it's still too soon to say that. From what I've seen the show has a interesting start and the Animation from in my personal opinion isn't bad at all. The unit designs aren't that bad either considering what we had to endure with the other series, these designs don't look bad at all to me. Can't want for Episode 2 to come out next week.

Can't want for Episode 2 to come out next week. well, unless you are me, who didn't like Wing that whole series of events in the first episode reminded me of how Gundam Wing was like... The animation was superbly done... I will not argue that, and the animation quality is like, woah Agree, that the series as a whole is too soon to call... but yea, I hope it does not take a turn for the worse

I miss the OLD sound effects. This is the first series to not use any of them.

the first episode was pretty good, but i hate virtue's pilot i even saw him with a purse in the ending credits. the animation is really nice and so far i like the story but i can't really tell after just one episode.

According to Episode 4, Graham Acre's Flag has been given anti-beam coating. This seems to suggest beam weapons are used by a faction other than their own that they have fought in the past, otherwise they wouldn't know what it was, let alone give it to a single pilot. Plus, they never said it was a new technology. It is entirely possible that other armies field beam weapons, though probably not on the scale of GN units.

So far I really like 00. It's turning out to be very interesting, and I can't wait to see what happens next. Especially with the current arc where Celestial Being's modus operendai is being challenged. It asks a good question, and that's what I look for in a show, something that challenges me to think. As for the mecha, I am extremely pleased with the designs. They are fresh and interesting, but still recognizable as gundams unlike the Turn A that takes some getting used to. Also the characters are also interesting/mysterious, in that it's already 8 episodes in, and we are only starting to see what the meisters are like and their history.
