He managed to unclip Bulbasaur's ball in time, barely, as a wild Caterpie and Metapod came out of the grass as he tossed it at an awkward angle to his side. Caterpie paid it no heed and continued in his direction until Bulbasaur had appeared and let loose a low growl, catching the wild Pokemon's attention. It even retreated a couple inches in response to the noise, away from it, before it loosed a string shot at Bulbasaur in response. Hayes didn't have time to get up before the Caterpie followed it up with a tackle, crashing into Bulbasaur as it tried (unsuccessfully) to shake off the string. It had been a good hit, truth be told, hitting Bulbasaur when it hadn't been expecting it.
"... nevermind that, Bulbasaur, tackle it!" He called out while in the process of getting off the ground, and watched as Bulbasaur did as he instructed; hitting the Bug-type Pokemon hard in response. Caterpie reeled back and let loose another string shot, but it hadn't gotten far enough away before it did, and before it had any additional effect it'd been hit again by another tackle. It'd been more like a headbutt, really, since the two Pokemon had been so close at the end.

Teddy was happy to hear that Hayes was still happy to meet the Munchlax regardless of not being his trainer anymore. Teddy knew that he was travelling with the right companions. "I wonder how we will know if the trade is complete. I don't know if there is some weird handshake we need to do" Teddy pondered "Actually maybe we should check our Pokedex's? They might know for us" Teddy suggested. He took his Pokedex out from his towel based bag and opened it. He scrolled through all of the Pokemon he had seen and captured so far. It was a minimal number, but he soon realised that the Munchlax in his Pokedex had been recorded as captured. Teddy went to tell Hayes, only to find him involved heavily in a battle. He went to investigate only for something to drop in front of his path!

It was a Metapod! Teddy briefly looked in his bag to check that it wasn't his own, but no, she was still tucked away in her Pokeball. This meant it was a wild one! Teddy looked behind it and saw that Hayes was busy fighting a Caterpie. These two must have been working together, waiting to corner the troupe of friends as they finally left the forest.
"Right. Let's get this over with!" Teddy shouted, rummaging around in his knapsack, he pulled out a Pokeball and flung it into the air, letting loose Wani-Wani, his totodile. He landed atop Teddy's head as ever. They briefly bumped fists before Wani-Wani flipped off Teddy's head and into battle. "We need this over before it hardens Wani! Give it your best Water Gun!" Teddy yelled. Totodile flipped and jumped into the air before firing a blast of water out towards the Metapod.
The force of which pushed it back and off the ground and into the bushes from whence it came. The partners stood guard ready for a counter attack. But there was nothing.
Metapod had gone. "Good work buddy!" Teddy yelled to Wani-Wani before returning him to his Pokeball.

By the time he'd gotten back on his feet the wild Caterpie was already unconscious and back in the tall grass after that last tackle, while Bulbasaur had remained undefeated... although it didn't look to be in the best state as it appeared to be breathing hard. Caterpie had landed a clean hit, after all, and he hadn't treated Bulbasaur after the battle it'd had earlier; it had looked fine after it, but there might've been a bit of damage left over. It was a lucky break that the Metapod hadn't gone after Bulbasaur as well, he thought. Hayes opted to check on Bulbasaur before anything else, although he'd heard Teddy mention using their Pokedex to see if the trade had worked before the battle had begun.
"Impressive, like always." Hayes said after he'd reached Bulbasaur, crouching down beside it and patting it on the bulb on it's back. It turned and looked at him after it'd felt the hand on it, and he could tell it'd had it's full of battle... it looked exhausted, although he was sure it'd leap into action if he asked. "I think you've earned a break." He told Bulbasaur, and he didn't hear any argument from it as he lifted up it's Pokeball and returned it to it. Once he had the ball back in it's place he stood up, turning around to look over at Teddy. "Always something in this place, huh?" He asked, holding back a chuckle. It had been an eventful time in the forest, and it looked like it'd be that way until they left it.
"But oh, good idea." He added after a moment, remembering what he'd heard before the Pokemon had appeared. "I hadn't thought to check the 'dex..." Hayes said, reaching into a back pocket to pull out the Pokedex in order to see if they'd completed the trade. He didn't find it in there, however, so he checked the other pocket... but it wasn't there, either. A flicker of doubt overcame him and he patted the sides of his pants, checking to see if he hadn't put it in one of those pockets instead, but again he didn't feel it. After a brief pause, Hayes slid the strap off his shoulder and lowered the bag to the ground before he started to look inside it for the device... but it didn't take too long before he realized.
"...I don't have my Pokedex."

As his totodile returned to it's Pokeball, Teddy thought about how far the two of them had come. It felt like forever since the two of them would spend their days swimming around the Whirl Islands, sunbathing and attempting to fight Chuck, the Cianwood City gym leader. They never won, but Chuck always let them try again. He told them it'd make them strong like the waves. Eventually water can wear everything down. Just persistence. He always finished off by saying that he however, would never be stopped by the waves.
Now the two of them were on a journey across Kanto. Teddy didn't know how far they would go, but he couldn't wait to continue. Then he heard Hayes from behind him and mention about his Pokedex. It had gone. Teddy grimaced. "Well that can't be good. Did a Spinarak steal it?" he enquired.

Hayes shot Teddy a look after he asked if a Spinarak had it, but decided not to say anything after a moment of thinking about it; there was a real chance that it could be the case.
"I mean... it might've?" He admitted after a time, but he didn't like the sound of it. There wasn't a whole lot he could do if he'd lost it in the forest except look for it. Hayes stood up and checked around the immediate area hoping it'd fallen out in the battle and he'd find it on the ground, and everything would be alright. He didn't, though, and it wasn't. How do I lose a Pokeball and a Pokedex? Hayes asked himself, wracking his brain in an attempt to remember the last time he'd had it. "I don't think I lost it then, but... I don't know. I'll need to go and check." He sighed, unable to remember the last time he had it in hand; he didn't remember seeing it when he'd gathered up everything in the morning, and he didn't use it in the forest at night, but it could've fallen out of a pocket at any time. Or it fell out after he'd been freed from the cocoon, and he hadn't noticed before he left... he did get out of there in a hurry, after all.
"Arhh." Hayes ran a hand through his hair, messing it up as he tried to think. It did him no good, however. "Okay, yeah, I need to go back. It shouldn't take me as long as it did for us to get here in the first place, if you wanted to go on and get out of the forest. I'll catch up, I think." He said after deciding on a course of action, not that there was much of a choice. It's not like he could leave it behind and keep going.

Teddy would have never guessed Hayes was so clumsy. During their time in Viridian Forest he had managed to become caught by a Spinarak, catch a Munchlax without realising and now lose his Pokedex. Everyone had characteristics that aren't apparent at first to those who see them. Teddy for example had a very interesting quirk about him. But it was one he hoped nobody would ever set eyes upon.
Hayes began to explain his plan, it involved him wandering back and retracing his steps from what Teddy could understand. He wasn't overly fond of the idea, breaking up their trio already. Hayes said he would join Matt and Teddy as soon as he could, but it felt wrong. Teddy had just got used to travelling as a group. But it had to be done. Professor Oak had given them a mission and it involved that Pokedex.
Teddy gave a curt nod. "We will be waiting for you in Pewter. Don't take too long!" Teddy said, slapping Hayes on the shoulder.

Matt's ear perked up when he had heard Hayes mention Heracross. He was busy trying to pull an entire closed jar of honey from Mudkip's mouth while Teddy and Hayes went about trading a Munchlax. In Hoenn you had to trade ownership through a machine in the Pokemon Center, but apparently other regions were much more lax when it came to ownership. Finally, Matt pried the jar out of Mudkip's mouth and put it back in his bag before standing up, chuckling, and patting his Pokemon on the fin. "You're a mess, bud." He said teasingly as Mudkip attempted to climb up his leg. Matt lifted Mudkip up, where it quickly climbed up his arm and perched on his shoulder. Before he had a chance to say anything though he noticed the Pokemon battles, so he just sat quietly, watching with a silent intensity that grasped his heart every time he was involved in a battle. He had to bite his tongue to keep himself from coaching his friends, but it didn't take very long for them to wrap up their battles. It was after that that Hayes realized he was missing his Pokedex and said he needed to go back to Viridian to get it. Teddy said they'd wait for him, and Matt agreed. Poor guy just can't catch a break in this forest... "Yeah, we'll see you in Pewter," Matt said cheerfully "If we can get out of this Forest ourselves..."

After Matt and Teddy had both said they'd see him in Pewter, he turned around and headed back along the path they'd been following; all the while looking around on the ground for a Pokedex. It didn't take too long before he'd reached camp and begun to look around, but he didn't expect to find it there. He hadn't been there as long as the two of them, instead spending the night out in the forest, and he hadn't seen it when he'd returned in the morning and gone over everything. After a short time he'd finished, and decided to look around in the surrounding area. Hayes didn't have high hopes, in truth, since he hadn't any idea where he'd been over the course of the night; it had been filled with stumbling around in the dark and trying to outrun a floating light that had ended up being a (familiar) Pokemon in the end, but he had to try... it ended up being a bust, however, and he almost tried to call out to Rotom and get some assistance.
After deciding against that, he'd gone and looked over as much of the forest as he could expect to, until he eventually found himself near the entrance of the forest. I'll take a break in town and head back out, I guess. I needed to stop by the PokeCenter anyway. Hayes sighed, deciding to take a break and go at it again after he had as he stepped back onto Route 2 and headed out of the forest.

Before Teddy could realise, Hayes had skipped off back into the forest. "Good luck buddy!" he yelled, his hands cupped around his mouth. He turned around to see Matt playing with his Mudkip and a jar of honey. That water Pokemon really loved honey. It looked as thought the two of them had a similar relationship to Teddy and Wani-Wani. He wondered if it was just a water Pokemon thing or what.
Seeing Matt place the honey in his bag, Teddy was struck by an idea. He realised they were close to the end of their forest adventure, but he still had some honey left over. He hopped over towards a good looking tree and unscrewed a jar of honey from his knapsack. Teddy looked back to make sure that Matt's Mudkip hadn't noticed. With that, he took a scoop of honey from the pot and lathered it upon the tree.

Before Teddy could blink, the honey appeared to work it's magic. There was a rustling in the bushes behind the honey soaked tree. Teddy turned his head around to face the oncoming noise, only to find the rustling stop. He was sure that he had not imagined it; there was definitely a Pokemon aiming for that honey he had soaked the tree with. Taking one of his Pokeball's from his bag he played around with it in his hand.
There was a rustling from above now, in the tree itself. Teddy picked up a rock from the ground and threw it into the air. It connected with a dull thud and a loud noise erupting from the canopy."Laaaaaaax~"the Munchlax cried as it fell from the tree to the ground. A Munchlax! Of all the Pokemon to appear, it had been the kind that he had just been gifted by Hayes after explaining how much it would mean to get one. A MUNCHLAX of all the Pokemon.
Teddy threw the Pokeball forward, releasing his Bulbasaur in a flash of red."Saaaauuurrr~"it cried out. Clearly happy to be part of the fight. The Munchlax got in the first blow with some kind of identifying move. Teddy followed up "Alright buddy! Lets start things off with a Leech Seed!" and with that, Bulbasaur shot out a small seed, implanting itself in the Munchlax. For the next few rounds, the two Pokemon exchanged tackle attacks whilst the Munchlax had it's health sapped by Bulbasaur's leech seed. Eventually the two of them managed to defeat the Munchlax who fell into the bushes and then ran off.
With the battle over, Teddy gave Bulbasaur a scratch behind the ears and then let him return to his Pokeball. With a new sense of luck instilled in Teddy, he decided to spread more honey on the tree. Clearly it had a habit of attracting rare Pokemon,

Naturally of all the Pokemon to arrive at the honey tree next was, a wurmple. Teddy stood plainly, staring at the Wurmple as it sucked the honey from the tree. A blank stare on his face as he pulled out a Pokeball from his bag. He threw it in the air and as usual the red light presented his flipping Totodile, Wani-Wani. "Alright Wani. You know the deal! Let's start things off with a-" Teddy went to say, only to be interrupted by the Wurmple firing a string shot at Wani, tying up his feet and slowing him down. "Water Gun Wani! Go!" Teddy continued. Wani-Wani propelling itself up from the ground and into the air, aiming his water gun at the Wurmple who was pushed back by the pure force of the water.
Wurmple pushed through the water and into a tackle attack, colliding head on with the falling Totodile who in turn was sent flying backwards. The force caused Wani-Wani's legs to be unbound and he launched into another Water Gun and they continued this exchange until finally Wani-Wani managed to defeat the Wurmple, sending it fleeing into the bushes once more. Teddy ran up to his Poke-Partner, delivering him a high five before returning him to his Pokeball.

Hayes didn't waste any time back-tracking once him and Teddy had told him that they'd meet him in Pewter. Matt watched as Hayes disappeared from view, with Teddy cheering him off. Mudkip began to get fussy on his shoulder and tried crawling up onto his head. In the process he ended up pulling off Matt's beanie and took it for his own. Matt picked up the small blue Pokemon off his shoulder and held him out in front of him, looking at his first actual Pokemon. It smiled at him with his beanie haphazardly stuck to his fin. Matt put Mudkip down and ran his hand through his hair. It was then that he noticed Teddy was already in another battle, this time with a Muchlax. He watched Teddy battle a few feet behind him. It didn't take very long for Bulbasaur to defeat it. But before Matt could say anything, Teddy was in another battle with a Wurmple. This time he sent out his Totodile. It was another short battle. Once the battle was over Matt walked a little but close to Teddy with the hatted Mudkip in his wake. "I'm really surprised to see so many non-native Pokemon in this forest. I think we've ran into more of the Wurmple line than the Caterpie or Weedle line at this point." Matt said with a chuckle.

It hadn't even been ten seconds after Matt made the remark about not running into many Kanto native Bug types when he suddenly heard an aggressive buzzing behind him. Matt spun around to see a Beedrill hovering a few feet away from him. Usually Pokemon didn't attack him unless provoked, but Beedrills were often unreasonably hostile. Matt took another step back with a small grin and pointed at the attacking Pokemon. "Go, Mudkip! Use Tackle!" He said, initiating the battle. He was excited to battle a fully evolved Pokemon and actually challenge his Pokemon for once to get them ready for the upcoming gym leader battle. Mudkip's attention was redirected from a branch it was chewing on to the wild Beedrill. It lept into the air, Matt's hat falling to the ground before it hit the Bug Pokemon directly with the attack. The Beedrill was sent flying backwards into the bushes, obviously knocked out in one attack. Matt just stood there for a moment in disbelief. "Well, that was disappointing..."

Apparently the fainted Beedrill hit a Metapod when it was knocked into the bushes, because a Metapod leaped out of the bushes almost immediately after. It took looked very angry and obviously wasn't going to back down. "Alright, Mudkip, let's do this! Use Tackle!" Matt commanded. The first Tackle actually didn't knock the Metapod out, which excited Matt. After landing a few feet back and recovering its footing, Mudkip and Matt watched as the Metapod glowed while it used Harden. Mudkip then charged again and used another Tackle attack, this time knocking out the second wild Bug Pokemon. "That's what I get for opening my mouth of the Kanto Bug-types... Let's keep going of Hayes'll catch up before we make it anywhere." Matt said, returning Mudkip to its Pokeball before picking up his hat, shaking the dirt off of it, and putting it back on.
