Shay paused, waving him off before he could answer. She felt a presence. One that she recognized, after all of these long months...
"Annabella," she called cheerfully. "I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't listen in. I told you not to. And you may be my best friend, but when I tell you not to...I mean it." She didn't have to send a telepathic message; she'd called loud enough that Annabella would hear her. When the spell wasn't broken, Shay sighed, muttered a spell, and broke the charm. There.
"Sorry," she informed him. "Annabella was listening in. Had to stop that, now, didn't we?" She flashed him a teasing grin. "I hate it when people do stuff I tell them not to do. Especially when it's for their own good!" she called, loud enough for Annabella to hear yet again. "Sorry. So...do you remember?" she asked hopefully.

Coleman closed his eyes and searched through his memories to find any trace of Shay. He had to go very far back to his early childhood, to before he was sent to a military training camp. A single memory stood out: It was nighttime, the sky was clear, he and his father were on their way over to his dad's friend's place for a beer. The man had a daughter that Coleman played with while their fathers drank themselves into a coma. As soon as Coleman saw the girl's face, his eyes burst open. "That was you?"

"Yes, it was," Shay answered solemnly. "I'm glad you remember. Because, I think that you'll take this from me as a friend, and that's the best way possible. I knew, from the moment I met you, that you were special. I just didn't know how yet."
She paused. "Now, don't think I'm giving a love confession or anything, okay? Because I'm not. I met you once before, and tonight. What I have to tell you is infinitely more important...so pay attention. What I'm about to tell you is going to change your life. You must listen and not speak a word. Understood?"
Before waiting for him to respond, she continued, "I don't suppose you've heard of the Sun Child Prophecy? You haven't? Well, it's not common for a human to know the prophecy, but faerie children memorize it as young children, as it's our next Great Prophecy..."
Clearing her throat, she recited:

"Stuck in winter frigid air
The child sits, he doesn’t care
With different eyes and blond-white hair
He’s human and it’s more than he can bear.
His eyes see past this snowy place
He sees his future, he knows his fate
And though he would like to defy, it isn’t his place
For him to defy that destiny he hates.
He’s the Child of the Sun
Different from the Child of the Moon
His trials have just begun
And they won’t end soon
For he’ll end the war brewing between
Humans and fae
On the Winter Solstice
Day.
His trials are great, but if his heart is pure and bright
He will withstand the trials of this cold night
The Child of the Moon died long ago
So he’s on his own, or don’t you know?
"

She chuckled. "Horrible rhyming, I know, but the faerie who prophesied this died years ago. And she wasn't much of a rhymer. I should know. I'm her daughter." She remembered her mother, Branwen, a woman who had a horrible husband, a half-blooded daughter, the gift of prophesy, and, ultimately, a terrible fate. Shay shook the memories away and stared at him.
"If you don't understand, I'll explain." She bit her lip, unsure where to begin. "I suppose you know that only a few years ago, the war began between faeries and humans? We were very young," she remembered, "and I didn't understand much of it. But this I did know...
"Only a while before I was born, the Child of the Sun was supposedly born. The prophesy claimed that he would be human, so we faeries lost hope. Undoubtedly, he would grow to be a faerie-hater, like his ancestors. But how lucky we are!" her eyes shone as she spoke, faster and faster, like a hyper child on Christmas morn. "We have you. You, Coleman, are the Child of the Sun. You will choose the fate of the war--who wins. If the humans win, bloodshed will rule until faeries are extinct. You know this. And all faeries--most faeries," she corrected, remembering those faeries she remembered that strangely reminded her of Kordeth, "--want peace. We just want peace.
"Your job is to choose, Coleman. I know that this has been thrust upon you, but destiny claims you as the Child of the Sun. You must fulfill your duty. Do not fail us, Coleman." She smiled weakly. "Do not fail us. We need you, Coleman."

[[The little girl? She's asleep upstairs. Might as well wake her up, though...]]

Kordeth scowled as Shay walked into the room with Coleman. Her wings flared out in anger, sending feathers everywhere. "A Child of the Sun...ridiculous!" she spat, resisting the urge to kick over a table. This wasn't her house.

Callyn watched them go, then sighed. She tiptoed over to Annabella. "What are they saying?" she whispered, knowing that her fellow fairy had cast a listening spell.

Tsubaki grit her teeth, and her nails dug into her palms. Beads of sweat rolled down her face as visions danced in her unconscious mind.

Two fairies grinned at Tsubaki, flames dancing around them. They laughed as they heard her parents screaming, crying out to God to save them from the fire that slowly consumed their flesh.

Tsubaki couldn't say anything. She didn't know what to think. She didn't know what to feel. She watched, her mouth open, as her parents curled over her little sister, trying to protect her.

After several more minutes of agonizing screams, her family was silenced. Tears rolled down Tsubaki's face, and she lowered her head. However, one of the fairies pulled her up by her hair, laughing.

"What's wrong, little girl? Are you crying because your family is gone?" the fairy asked in a teasing tone. Her deep purple eyes blazed with the fire, as if the two were connected.

When Tsubaki remained silent, the second fairy, a male, struck her across the face. You could tell he wasn't anything human, for the blow's force rippled throughout her skull. Tsubaki bit back a cry of pain. "Talk, you insolent human. Don't ignore us." he growled.

The female fairy cackled. "Now, now, brother. Don't scare the girl so. She didn't do anything." she replied, loosening her grip on Tsubaki's hair.

The male fairy frowned. "They're human, aren't they? They're disgusting creatures. All of them deserve to die. Even little brats like these." he hissed, his eyes narrowed.

The female fairy rolled her eyes. Tsubaki shifted so that she had one foot on the ground, then sprung into the air. Surprised, the female fairy scrambled back.

Tsubaki landed in a neat roll on the ground, several yards away from the fairies. She was only twelve, but she wouldn't let these...these...monsters get away with this! She had to-

Before Tsubaki could even finish planning her next move, a sharp pain shot through her. Blood gurgled up in her mouth, and she spat it out, looking down in horror. The man had his hand lodged in her abdomen.

"Thought you could beat us, didn't you? I think I'll leave you alive, and give you a little reminder of the true power of fairies." the male growled. His eyes flashed, and his hand began to glow. "Remember this day, human. Forever. And feel the same pain you have now."

It felt as if there was a fire inside Tsubaki's body. Her eyes widened as her veins seemed to burn, and finally, she let out a scream.

The man just grinned.

Tsubaki screamed. She was on fire, she knew it. But she couldn't open her eyes. She felt like she was being eaten away, ever so slowly.

She screamed again, thrashing. She couldn't wake up to come to her senses, yet she couldn't just remain peacefully unconscious. Coleman hit my scar...that's what happened... the rational part of her realized.

But the rest of Tsubaki was convinced that she was set ablaze.

Natalie's eyes shot open as a scream echoed through the house. She slowly got of her bed, walking towards the door. "Miss Annabella? Mr. Coleman? Is everything okay?" she called. Another scream answered her, and she took a step out of the bedroom, trying to look down the stairs.

Coleman laughed in disbelief. It was hard to accept that he was the so-called "child of the sun"
It's a little farfetched when you think about it, that I, a human, betrayed by my own kind, was chosen to decide between killing the people who have saved my life countless times, and stopping the war and creating equality between the two races. Coleman thought, The decision may seem easy, but what if there are other fairies like that Kordeth character? This is going to be tougher than I thought.
Coleman walked up to Shay and hugged her. "I would never betray you." he said, "I would nev-" Coleman was interrupted by a blood-curdling scream coming from the main room followed by the soft voice of the little human girl from when he first arrived at this cabin. "Conversation over. I need to check up on Tsubaki. If she wakes up unrestrained around all those fairies, there's going to be a bloodbath."

"Of course," Shay said softly. She was touched by his embrace. It had been so long since someone had hugged her...the last hug she had ever received had been from Mara, and so long ago... "Go to her, Coleman. Tsubaki needs the...um, reassurance...you can give her."
As she had done with everything else, she let him go, and followed behind.

"She must be having that dream again." Coleman told himself. Coleman needed to get the fairies out before she wakes up.

"What's wrong with her?" Alice asked loudly jumping up from her spot on the couch then turned her head to the side noticing the small girl.
"Who are you?" Alice asked as she slowly descended the stairs without the others noticing. But when the girl stepped back from her she softly smiled and held out her hand.
"I'm Alice. I wouldn't hurt you." She said, sitting down on the stairs right below the top and lowering her wings but not drawing them in.

"Attention everyone! Will you please kindly leave the room before you are all slaughtered mercilessly?" Colemas asked politely.

Alice hated speeding along but as much as she wanted to gain the girls trust before hand she needed to save her life before that would happen or it might not happen at all. Alice leaped for the little girl grabbing her by her shirt and stood up. The little girl wailed but Alice picked her up and headed downstairs in a panicked formation.
"Shhh it okay I'm not going to hurt you , your okay," Alice comforted the little girl as she ran up to Coleman," Coleman what the hell is going on here and why is she screaming?!?!?"

"Questions later. Leave now before you all die."

Adaric followed Alice, trying to calm the girl down.

Annabella was crouched near Tsubaki. She had her hands of the girl, restraining her delicately. "She seems to be having a dream, no magic is working on her. At least, none that I can feel."

"No magic. It's just post-traumatic stress." Coleman said, shoving Annabella and the rest of the fairies out the door leaving only Tsubaki and himself.

Annabella kicked the door. "I am not a toddler!" She screamed.

Shay smiled teasingly, crouching behind Annabella, who was furiously kicking the door. "Sorry, but you are kind of, mentally, that is," Shay joked. She flashed Annabella a teasing grin, hoping that Annabella would recognize the smile that Shay reserved only for her--her previous best friend.
Can we ever reform that relationship? Shay wondered. I killed our friendship by leaving to look for Mara's killer. I was blinded by revenge and hatred, and I left her in a time of great need. Hopefully, though, we can still remain friends. We can work together and train Coleman to harness his powers in the way that he wants. That is what we need. It's what the whole world needs.
