Kun Yi stopped, heaving a sigh. "We have to go back?" She looked over the sand forlornly. It was getting hotter, and her red and black coat was soaking up the heat. She could only imagine what Shaitani was feeling.

His tail swayed, feathers creating small puffs of dust behind him, "If we don't, we oculd be in serious trouble..." He sighed, turned himself aorund to head back to the cave. The cool shadows seemed welcoming. "Besides... They might be worried." The words were choked.
He still felt the need to put up his facade. Not is playful cub facade, but a different one he had carefully crafted as if from marble. It was chiseled - polite, kind, caring. The only person that he cared about that was back at the cave right now was Ling - he had taken him in, rescued him... Otherwise, he could care less. However, afraid to display this coldness, this black heart of his with cold blood pulsing through it, he was determined to keep this facade until he felt that he was safe displaying his true nature.

Being one of the same nature the red lioness snorted. "Oh please..." The only thing that differed was that she didn't care about hiding. "You and I both know that they are all idiots." Except for her sister. "A little worry would be good for them all." Might shake up Pride life for a bit.

Furrowing his brow a moment, he looked down the the lioness, "Why did you follow me? And no trick answers - You're not one to do something without reason, even if you dislike it." He hadn't given him an answer before, and it still bugged him. He was used to being alone, exploring alone, and educating himself alone. He had taught himself to kill. He had taught himself to survive. But most importantly, he had taught himself how to read others. It had proven useful many times, but also caused him to rarely trust anyone. He could always sense a hidden motive, and that made him uneasy. The unknowing of the motive make him hate most lions, knowing they could be plotting to kill him if they needed. He had always managed to stay away from the troublemakers, and find safe places to rest if a den mother offered it to him. This skill had kept him alive, but deathfully so.

"Why?" Fan Kun Yi slunk alongside him, shoulder blades moving under the rippling coat. The need for stealth when she and her sister were cubs had stayed with her. She moved without sound in the oasis, and was a better huntress then most cubs her age.
There was a slight pause before she stopped and bored amethyst into ash. "You are stronger, smarter and more powerful then any other lion in this Pride." One ear twitched, the red and black flakes shaking. "You are going to be a powerful, affluential King one day and I...I will be there with you to help."

He stopped in his tracks at her words. Chills soared throughout his body. He wasn't sure why. His black heart beat faster. He didn't know why. Was it because a female was saying it? Was it because he wanted so badly for it to be true? Unsure how to respond, his body quivered a moment, tail swaying and ears twitching. Nothing came to him.
The facade broke, and he receded, all thoughts and feelings becoming shrouded by a mist and swallowed into that black heart. He continued forward, still shaking slightly, "...If we don't make it back soon, we're going to die from the heat."
A coldness intensified his voice. This is what always happened - this was him. The fun-loving child had died long ago, his nerves with him. They were dull now. All that was left was the fear.

Kun Yi smiled, and started humming. It was low enough that anyone who wasn't paying attention would never hear it. If Shaitani was listening then he better be pleased that she trusted him enough to hear her. Only Xiao Rou up until then had.
She was content with progress thus far. That may have sounded cold and harsh to anyone else, but it was her way of thinking. One of her dreams was to have a strong, influential Pride and to stand beside her King, one that had captured her heart. She had found one, but the other still had to be done.

The cave was with-in sight, and he wanted nothing more than to lie down in his dark corner and melt away into the shadows. They had always protected him and calmed him. Black through and through... Just like my father had always said.
Kun Yi's humming seemed to calm him slightly. He didn't know she liked music, and found it pleasing.
The soft grass was a decent change to the rough sand. It felt plush and welcoming. The desert sands were unfamiliar, which made them alluring to the adventurous soul. However, he felt safer in the grass, knowing what was around and that he could easily find an attacking point.
His mind wandered to Kun Yi. He had never understood the female mind, and still failed. She was a strong female, and could easily lead her own pride if she so desired. He failed to understand what had attracted her to him.
To himself, he was a weak, powerless, frightened lion - that's how he had always thought of himself, anyway. Always the weak one of the pack. His father had always shunned him for his weakness - that's what he told himself, anyway. But after hearing this... this compliment, he had been caught off-guard.
His voice remained cold as he walked forward, glad ot be free of the heated sands.
"...Thank you."

The smaller lion loped ahead, pausing in the mouth of the cave. "Would I tell a lie, Shaitani?" With a small smirk Yi strode into the cavern. "Xiao? Xiao!

He bristled, assuming it was a rhetorical question. But he knew the answer, as much as it confused him.
Upon reaching the cave, he moved heavily to the corner he had claimed when he had been just a kitten.
He laid down, resting his head on his forepaws. Letting out a puff of air, he silently wondered why he insisted on pushing lions away. He saw only honesty in Kun Yi, yet he still ran away.
His tail swayed, rearranging the dirt on the floor of the cave.
Arrogance. Courage. Strength.
Which belonged to him and which belonged to the chiseled marble?
Kun Yi brought these questions to him and shattered the marble. It now lay in pieces, the beauty only a memory. No one would recognize the real him.
Maybe that was for the better.
He looked through the darkness to Kun Yi and smiled slightly. Chills ran through his blood, and his heart beat faster.
Why did it matter what was real?
Anything could be real with encouragement. That had been what he had lacked as a child, and he suddenly understood why. his father had shunned him son after he had scratched deeply into his brother's face during one of their wrestling matches. It was then that his father understood that he was more powerful than him, and he was afraid of what might happen. Because of this he watched them die, and didn't care. He was stronger, and felt something he had never felt before.
Smiling slightly, one name ran through his mind.

She could smell her sister on the rocks, the blue pheonix lioness had been there shortly ago. Yet now she wasn't. Tension mounted in Kun Yi's body. Xiao was gone. She was gone, had disappeared when Kun Yi had been out with Shaitani. She never noticed that the other cubs were gone as well.
Xiao was gone.
Yi went to the only other lion she would turn to comfort for. Shaitani. "Xiao is gone!" She was shaking. It was as if her nightmares had become reality.

Adelle had movedinto the green grass and sniffed the air catching the scent of clean water. She followed her nose and drank her fill before lifting her head and letting out a roar to announce her presence to the local king.
Inside the cave Nola had played around in the cave with the others and finally pounced on Xia playfully when Shaitani and Kun Yi came back. She lifted her head to look at them when a distant roar echoed around the cave.

Ling took note of the roar when he heard it. He sighed and looked to Xia who had recently been tackled by the small Nola. He sighed and looked ot Xia. "I have to go, when I return I wish to speak with you." He looked tot he Cubs at the back of the cave. "Forgive me, I cannot join you..." With that he was gone, he took off, out of the cave. Life never stood still for him, never..all he wanted was to speak with Xia, and he couldn't even have that. He ran to where he had heard the roar, and stopped, seeing a female in the distance. 'wonderful..another' He sighed and moved slowly towards her.

Adelle sat at the water's edge and watched the other lion approch. When he was near enough she bowed her head to him marginally. "I come in peace."

Ling sighed and nodded to the female. "I notice..." He stopped before her and looked her over. "You look parched...and famished my dear.." He smiled warmly at her. "There is food...at my home...you may eat there if you wish..."
