My understanding is that someone who has been labeled "emo" is attention seeking, and will go to any lengths to have someone pity them. They very much have to make it seem like they have things so much worse than everyone else. Someone who is "emo" isn't necessarily a goth, they're favorite colour isn't necessarily black, and they don't necessarily listen to Linkin Park, although this is how they're labelled. I know a lot of people who are attention seeking like that who don't fit the physical description.
I don't like telling people that I'm in therapy or that Linkin Park happens to be my favorite band, or that one of my favorite colours happens to be black, because the wrong people automatically assume that I'm emo. None of the three things have anything to do with the other. I'm in therapy because I have some issues that I am dealing with and resolving. Linkin Park is my favorite band because I think that they're good at what they do, and I generally enjoy listening to their music. One of my favorite colours is black because I think it looks good on me, but I don't dress in all black, either.
It bothers me that these "emo" kids have made it difficult for young people with serious problems to get help. The only time I could actually get any help for my problems was when I went to a mental health clinic that dealt with mainly adults. I couldn't get any help from guidence councelors while I was still in grade school because none of them took me seriously. They thought I was just another one of "those" kids. It still makes me really angry because it's like no one who can help will because they don't know if they really need it or not.
Well... it's not even if they need it or not, it's if they can give them the right kind of help. Emo kids need help, but not for the stories they make up, or for the problems they blow out of proportion. They could be neglected at home, and are looking for ways to get people to pay attention to them. They could have a personality disorder. They could have any number of things wrong.
Another thing that really pisses me off is the assumption that someone who cuts themselves is emo, and is only looking for attention. That is not the case in a lot of these situations. Someone who is very close to me cuts herself. She is not emo. She is epileptic, she has seizures daily that are getting worse, and her meds aren't helping. It is also strongly suspected that she's bi-polar, and she cuts herself when she's on a low. I'm not her, so I can't tell you what goes through her mind when she does it, but I can tell you that she's not doing it for attention.

Look, as long as someone has a valid reason for depression/need of therapy, I have no quarrel.

Shazbot_the_Pirate Look, as long as someone has a valid reason for depression/need of therapy, I have no quarrel. Please realize that I was generalizing. If I'm going to point fingers at people, I'm going to do it straight out. Your comment just happened to make me think of the typical emo stereotype and the misconception that surrounds young people who have some sort of depression. If I seemed angry, it wasn't at you, it was at the whole situation. It just really upsets me that there are so many teens out there who aren't getting the help they need because people see it as a normal thing for a teenager to be "depressed".

One of my friends was suffering from mild depression due to family issues, and I helped her come back. But it seems like depression is becoming the new 'in-thing' for kids these days. The people who act like they're depressed are making the whole thing seem like it isn't such a big deal, which is a problem for the people who really do need help. And that's what's really depressing. And that's why I can't stand emo's. The kids who act like they're depressed and expect sympathy, while people who are really depressed suffer.

Bad news bears. I , suddenly, have no internet access at my home and won't until at the very earliest on friday, and if not then, then not until sometime the next week. I don't know what the problem is, the lines just got broke somewhere, I guess. Who knows. Anyway, a techy from aliant is coming by on friday sometime, but I won't be home cause I have work. So, we'll see what happens. Until I'm back permanently, just make sure the join requests get checked somewhat regularly and that nothing crazy bad happens. Though I know nothing will anyway, it's not like I actually do anything here.

Wow that sucks. They always take so long to come check things out, too. After one of the storms we had, our cable line was more or less hanging from the house. It was like that for a few weeks, and we didn't realize, which is funny becase our internet was going really slow because of it. Anyway, a large truck drove under the hanging line and ripped it right out of the side of the house. It took them a week to get out to fix it.

As luck would have it, I got home at 5 today after visiting my grandmother, and the internet was working fine. All the lights on the modem were green, and sure enough, here I am posting. So ignore my last message, cause it looks like I'm not going anywhere after all.

Question: Just out of curiosity, how many of you watched Bill Nye as a kid?
