The big man shifted awkwardly at the sight of the tiniest egg beginning to shudder and twitch, his eyes falling on it with his mind empty. He just felt drained at this point, exhausted and knowing he'd hurt tomorrow, but not even considering leaving the Sands and going to bed. He could sleep when he was dead. Taking a slow breath, he steadied himself, and waited to see what sort of monster--or behaved dragon--would crawl forth.

Zafir chuckled at his friend's comment about the sands, and formed a reply about how they were a test of character, but before he could speak, one of the eggs began to crack. One of the small ones, or maybe the smallest. The Shetland.

"Aha! And here's our chance now." He replied, belatedly, as he scrambled back to his feet. In the lull, his stomach had settled, but with things beginning once more, the knots were eager to return. Zafir shifted his weight from foot to foot, waiting to see what would come of the little egg. Perhaps Raedue had been right, and a sweet little green would pop out, to even up the count between males and females.

After such a long lull, Firyal had begun to wonder: Had Kyllae actually damaged the remaining eggs? Was it possible that they wouldn't hatch at all? That would be a tragedy almost beyond imagining. Almost. It wasn't always a wonderful thing to have an active imagination. Sometimes Firyal wished the scope of her mind was more limited, so that she would not be forced to consider thoughts like those running through her head just before the next egg began to move. Because of the dismal path her mind was taking her down, Firyal actually wondered if maybe the dragon within the egg was too weak to break out of its shell. When the egg finally began to crack she released a breath she hadn't known she'd been holding.

"Thank Faranth," she murmured. Even if this next dragon turned out to be as foul-tempered as the gold who had mauled her earlier - and the wounds from that mauling still smarted if she let herself think about it, since the lull had given the numbweed plenty of time to wear off - Firyal was grateful that it was at least healthy.

Raedue gasped and jumped up as an egg started cracking. "Yes. Here's our chance indeed." He grabbed his friend's hand in his excitement, needing something to squeeze now that the tension and anxiety and all the other emotions that came with a hatching had slammed back full force.

Ooooh! Another egg had started to move! It was long before this that Alanna had given up on any hopes of actually impressing, now more of a spectator in watching the small egg shake and ready itself to go and pick 'its'.

Would it be a green? A blue? Ohhh, she couldn't even remember any of this 'guessing' stuff when it came to the bets from earlier -- everything was just a rush of adrenaline at this point. Hmm, perhaps this one would impress to another of the boys?

Or rather..
..

A small egg would perhaps impress to one of the girls? Oooh, this was a possibility. Oh, she just didn't know at this point.

Hello, Ianquith. Asceth replied, warmly. He liked the green, she was always so nice! Her nature wasn't like the other greens, needy for attention or angry. That marked her quite well, in Asceth's book. And it helped, that his bonded was acquainted with hers.

"Aw man." N'tos looked sympathetically at the green, knowing that nature didn't match this blood-thirsty atmosphere earlier in the hatching. "It looks like alot of the dragons were perturbed by this. What happened?" He heard snitches, and scraps of this Kyllae person. But nothing of what had actually happened.

Do not worry. Everyone has come out well so far. Asceth tried to soothe the green, his own eyes were a jade green. See? He nodded to the angry golden queen who had already walked off to the feeding area.

But the sudden lull was broken.. N'tos noticing out of the corner of his eye, that another egg was hatching. "Hopefully, it won't be like the others." He noted, watching with distant golden eyes. "We wouldn't want Ianquith and Asceth fearful again, would we?"

M'rik didn't have a shadow of the thought of wanting this newest egg for himself- even a really gorgeous Brown wouldn't be close as perfect as Hasufeth. But he did have friends on the sands still, and he was so giddy his hands were still shaking as he placed strip after strip of meat into the Blue's mouth. He wanted everyone he'd ever met to know this kind of happiness- and he wanted very much to see Raedue and Zafir Impress that night. He finally caught a glimpse of Darcir as well, and his heart fluttered with relief. He hadn't realized until just then that his roommate hadn't crossed his line of sight the whole time- anything could've happened to him without anyone knowing. There was still a bit of a sour taste in the back of his mouth from all the scowling he'd received lately, but he was no less glad to see the other Candidate. Maybe I should wave? Think he can see me?
Mine, you think too much. Don't be so noisy, please, Mine. Can I have more? Of course! I'm just... excited. He rubbed Hasufeth's eye ridge, reaching up onto the table and feeling until he got another slimy bit of meat, not wanting to stand up to see them. Excited! What else could anyone be? Hasufeth, his Hasufeth. He still wasn't over the shock of another consciousness suddenly latched into his own. Not that he everwanted it to leave! No, never, never! And all the new Impressions being made... and his friends on the sands too! It was very exciting, to say the least.

M'rik put an arm around Hasufeth's neck, pulling the Hatchling a bit awkwardly into his lap. You've eaten enough, you'll make yourself sick. Let's watch, huh? Watch what, Mine? He chuckled and petted the thick Blue neck. The Hatching. See there? He pointed at the Shetland Pony egg, though it didn't seem as active as it had a minute ago. What color is that Dragont? I know people still Standing, I'd like to know if they have a chance. Hasufeth cocked his head to the side for a moment, eyes whirling slowly.
Mine, that's an egg.
M'rik gave a loud guffaw and hugged the Blue despite himself. You know, never mind. I'll just wait and see.

Dolmin had made an indistinct noise, caught up in watching the dragons as they hatched, each by each, and sought out their owners. He breathed lightly, eyes flickering from point to point, excited and dreading every new development. Every time another egg cracked, he flinched a little, expecting the worst - a new draconian hellion to break free and begin a new bloodbath.

But it wasn't happening. These dragons were all so much calmer, more cool-headed and friendly. Just look at that big bronze, getting coddled over by the girl Candidates! This was more what he'd expected from a Hatching. Peaceful, light-hearted, touching. Why, he wondered, were the first ones to hatch all so mean and scary? And these later ones were nicer....

"... When I'm out to Impress," he told Kagiya quietly, imparting on her his sage observations, "I'm gonna wait 'til the first ones have all hatched and gone on their way, then I'll move up front. That way, all the mean ones are gone."

“That’s a good idea,” Kagiya said, in agreement with Dolmin. Better to wait an’ keep the beasties at bay, and then get your shot at them. Besides, if they were yours they’d go for you, right? “We gots to try it, when we Stand.” It was unspoken between them that they would be Standing one day. Both of the Weyrbrats were convinced that they alone were worthy of that distinction, in their own way, so that was not surprising.

She oohed and ahhed as events took place, and Impressions were made, peering out over the Sands. Just then, she thought she saw a familiar face. “HEY! Hey Dol, lookit! That’s my daddy!” At least, she thought it was S’kagi. It was real hard to tell from where they were. She could be wrong, but she wasn’t going to admit to it, not even for a moment. Not ever.

“I wanna be a rider just like my daddy,” she confided in Dolmin, feeling as though it was perfectly reasonable to think of such a future. Look at all those eggs! Dragons had lotsa eggs, so one of them one day had to be hers. Right? Right? Well, if she didn’t Impress she could be a Healer like her mommy. That would be good too. Daddy had said that Healers were important.

J'riar didn't bother to bite back a smile at the way Ianquith's mood swelled hopefully from whatever the brown was saying to her, watched her small body relax a little more. She probably would have huddled close to the other, but she knew that wouldn't have been polite.

"Asceth, too?" He clicked his tongue against his teeth, and he felt bad that the dragons had to fret through that all. "Least he doesn't seem to rile too easy; she gets herself all up in a tizzy and then isn't quite sure how to wind her way back down.

Yes, thankfully... but I am worried about those that... that they hurt. She sighed a little, but brightened slightly at the rocking egg. Oh! Mine, another one...I hope it is nicer.

"Not at all. Last thing we need is hysterical dragons in the Stands." He grinned a little at the brown, then at N'tos. "But thanks for coming over here--think she needed someone scaly and a bit more her size to help her out."

At some point in the evening, Inaari had simply stopped her vigilant watch and had simply sat down on the warm sands to rest her head on her arms. The girl had never been much of a heavy sleeper, so when the murmurs and gasps started again, she would be awake to see. Or so she'd thought! Now, only with a rush of speech rushing through the Candidates left on the sand, did she lift bleary brown eyes to stare at the Shetland egg.

She blinked once, twice, and then shot forward onto her hands and knees, scrambling to stand up. Another egg was about to hatch! Perhaps with the time between this hatching, and that of its angrier siblings, this egg would behave normally!

But in this batch, who even knew.

Pendra was almost in a doze from the heat and the lack of action... but finally the buzz from the stands grew louder. Ahh another egg was finally moving. It was the smallest of the clutch and most seemed to expect a green, but the eggs could be decieving. Come on now little one, the stage is set, all eyes are on you... She hoped that's what it wanted. It would be ashame if it turned out to be a shy one in this spotlight.

She was still gently swaying from foot to foot as the Shetland Pony egg started up. The small egg could be hiding another green, she fantasized, or another blue. In any case, it could be something for her; there was a small chance, however small, that she was staring at the egg containing her future. Okay, taking it down a notch, Weiwin just tried to relax in her skin. She was perspiring just a little and her frizzled black hair was drawn back into a short braid just soaking up the sweat, but she had to relax if only a little. She arched her back slightly and dug her sandals into the sands. No more swaying. The dark egg with its dirty spot got her full attention, head turned to the side and eyes wide with curiosity.

When everyone else tensed, Selachii did too -- after the brief lull, he sucked in a deep breath and flicked his eyes about -- where was it? When his eyes settled on the small egg, he found his breath drawing in. What could it be? Antsy, he tried to calm himself down, looking to either side at the candidates there. "H-hey," he said, trying to make small talk in his excitement, "what kind of dragonet do you think's in there?"

Attending a Hatching should be easy. It was a time to celebrate! Make merry! Show support for all the Candidates, and maybe scout out a few more members for the ILA!

But for some reason, O'asis couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding. He'd done very well so far, he thought, not to get involved with the disastrous actions of one of his friends. Given that the injured party was his benefactor, it only seemed like the right way to go about things. So he'd done his best to plug his ears and stay single-minded in his business, looking after Uktenath (and now Argent as well!) and minding his own affairs - but to come to the Hatching, ah, now that was just asking to be stuck in the middle of something he didn't want any part of.

But Uktenath wouldn't hear of it. And so the bronze had effectively kicked him out of his own weyr, threatening to do unspeakable things to his belongings if he didn't get his reluctant butt to the Bowl and show his support.

Of course, even before he got there, he knew that every little nightmare he'd had about this day had come true. What Weyrfolk weren't at the Hatching already were abuzz with rumor - so many maulings! The little queen, so angry, and that brown...!

So he'd found a small excuse to dawdle, having a pep talk with the ladies preparing for the Hatching feast after.

But then was Uktenath in his mind, unamused - and a flash of one of his finest shirts, soon to be shredded beneath dragon claws. I'll do it, Mine. You know that I will.

O'asis swallowed. The little bronze wasn't bluffing. So he plucked up his courage, recited mentally his excuses for coming late, and trudged his way to the Stands.

Of course, the moment he arrived, all reluctance had faded. All confident grins and infectious laughs and easy jokes from O'asis, as should be expected! He found S'van quickly in the crowd, and made his way over to elbow his way into a seat by his friend. "Didn't miss too much, did I?" he questioned merrily.

S’van, of course, did not at all approve of the injured party being O’asis’ benefactor. Of course, S’van didn’t approve of man stealing women who only fluttered about like wherryhens—and that was enough of that thought. Vera would’ve smacked him for thinking it anyway. In point of fact, the woman in question reached over and swatted the back of his head just on principle. “Pay attention, S’van!” But S’van couldn’t pay attention, because now that all of his friends (save Inaari) had Impressed, he was waiting around for O’asis to show up.

Where was Kas? Shardit, if one was a Bronzerider, one had an obligation to attend Hatchings… didn’t one? Ah well. Even as Vera chided him, he felt justified in his musings. Oooh. Look, an egg was rocking! Curiously, S’van peered out over the Sands, trying to decide what he thought would Hatch from it. Would it be a Blue or a Green? Or, perhaps… a small Brown? Maybe. They’d have to see, wouldn’t they? Distantly, he nursed the fear that the little thing wouldn’t hatch after all.

What happened when eggs were touched before their time? What happened when there was no Touching? He didn’t know, and he dreaded finding out. He had heard rumors that dragonets went between, and didn’t return. That was a horrible notion. A terrible notion. It… he just couldn’t stand the thought of the little beasts being harmed like that. Somehow, in the midst of this, he managed to summon up some sympathy for the girl who had started it all.

Surely Kyllae had had no idea. She hadn’t seemed like the kind of girl who would willfully put tiny lives at risk. But… then again, he didn’t know her well, and what little he knew didn’t seem terribly positive. This only confirmed his first impression of her. Yet… still, she must have regretted her actions. Was she, even now, regretting them as she watched? Ah well. There was no point in worrying over something that had not manifested yet. So far, aside from being angry, there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with the dragonets.

“Kas!” S’van crowed, and pulled his friend into his side for a moment for a hug. “No, you didn’t miss much… just the Queen dragon Impressing, and a brown, and a bronze… and shells, you missed people being mauled. Hey! Did you know Rinfala Impressed the Queen?” And that M’al had Impressed a Blue after being mauled by the Brown? “Actually, yeah. You missed a lot. Wherry. Where were you?” S’van, of course, had missed him, and it would’ve been nice to discuss the events together. There'd been another couple of dragons in there, but he really hadn't been paying attention at that point, sadly.

Veyes' eyes riveted on the small egg as it started to shake; he could only guess what was inside being as small as it was. It truly fascinated him that one day something so small would be a dragon larger than himself. It was amazing. He crossed his fingers that this one might find him or any of his friends acceptable as a choice. If it were an agile little green, his mentor would be very proud indeed. Veyes would be happy with almost any color although, he wanted to chase after big dreams...he hoped what ever dragon that found him was willing to go after them too...

For a brief moment, he glanced over at Ren to make sure he knew where the boy was. Just in case. If a dragon did charge at them, he hoped to push Ren out of the way at least so as not to get mauled. Maybe he was just a little over protective but after being so helpless for his other two friends across the sands, he wanted to be able to do something. Then after assuring himself that Ren was near by, his eyes returned to the small egg....waiting.
