Severus sighed as Gwin took off again. "Girls." He said with frustration, but nevertheless, ran to catch up with the Rogue. At the sight of the very large Sphinx, though, Severz' skidded to a halt, almost running into Gwin. "What the...."
Kailyn shook her head at Sirius. "Right, right. You just keep thinking that, 'Kay?" And with that jibe, she promptly started to ignore him, turning her attention to the other two. "What is that, Nadia?"

Gwin took a moment to glance over her shoulder, disturbed by the shortage of space between she and Sev, snorted, then ran (as best she could) to Leah and James. She stood tall, and hauled Leah behind her. Gwin thrust her hand into her belt loop, and brought out the circlet. She held it like a rifle, her arms shaking a bit.
"I have no clue what this does, but I bet it can pack a punch- If it wants to...." she finished lamely.
[May I claim the shpinx?.... :Not waiting for an answer: What!? I can edit it out later! :Huff:]
The sphinx gave a wicked smile, showing all it's pointed teeth in a cheshire grin. "If it wants to?" it purred, a secret amuzment only to match the Mona Lisa revibrating in it's tone. It's voice was rather nasal, but had a ring and had the laziness of a New York nanny. "You mean to say- You haven't learned how to use it?" It stepped forward, talon-like claws scraping into the earth. At Gwin's frightened look, it cackled. "Well, you might as well put that thing down," it pushed the circlet down with it's paw easily, and Gwin looked as if she was about to faint. "You might hurt yourself." The shpinx gave a side-long glance at Severus and winked. It sat on it's haunches and it's tail twitched back and forth. One of it's eyebrows raised coily.
It waited.

[Go ahead, take the sphinx! It's rather a relief, actually.... xB ]
Leah let Gwin take the lead, but she could feel her sister's fear. "James!" She hissed. "Do something!" James grimaced, but tenetively raised his wand. As soon as he did so, his mind went completely blank: He could not remember one single jinx, spell, charm, or curse. "Uh...." Leah sighed, and stepped out from behind Gwin, glaring at the Sphinx. "What do you...want?" She said rather lamely, but with as much courage as she could muster. She grabbed her sister's hand, and waited.

Severus joined the other, and let Gwin and Leah make their challenges. The glance and wink that the creature gave him though....Not a good sign. The Slytherin felt that weird uneasy feeling starting in his gut, but refused to show it.

A mockingly pained look crossed the sphinx's face. "You do not know what I seek? And all this time I thought we were under a school." it chuckled darkly. "I want an answer, or a fresh meal- It's up to you to choose which will be given." It paused, taking a long moment to survey what was on the menu. An egotystical leader, scrawny enough to be some sort of minor athlete. Two girls, one who had lost somthing beyond the shpinx to grasp, and the other another leader, their tension mixed showed the two were close. And the last, yes, the deliciously saddened one, the one who was the lone Slytherin. He would make a good meal. Gwin tightened her grip on her adopted sister's hand. True, it was she who was adopted, but it seemed at the moment, it was Leah whom needed the most care. Gwin cast a glance at the befuddled James, and the shell-shocked Severus. They both seemed a little out of it. James wouldn't be much help, seeing as he had, what she guessed at, had a mind-blank. Not much use in the way of riddles, or any mind-game of the sort. Gwin glanced at Leah, admiring how she always sprung back to her feet, recovering moments after disaster. She was... Smart. But would she take the challange? Of course she would. But she couldn't handle loosing another family. What about herself? Gwin toyed with the idea, then knew she couldn't defend herself without a weapon. Rhea was usless, claiming Gwin, and ignoring any magical plea she sent- And the circlet? Gwin almost laughed aloud- What good would a bronze circlet do against claws and teeth? That left Severus. She flinched. He was a sweet kid, under all the greese and cold. Cold greese? Gwin shook her head, what was she thinking?! In any case, he was the obvious choice, he was the one with the sword, at least he could knock the sphinx back. Helluva punch, that sword. Gwin looked to Severus. "I think we'll take the answer option, thank you. Sev, you want a swing at it?"

Severus registered that Gwin had had called him 'Sev', again; but now was not the time. An answer? Probably a riddle, from what he had heard of Sphinxes. Hm.....Okay, so I'm good at riddles....Will I be good enough? "Alright." He said as casually as he could manage, although he was quite nervous. He did not want to become this creature's next meal, but he stepped forward anyways. "What's the question?"

Leah, practically sharing her sister's thoughts as she usually did, knew why Gwin flinched. She leaned closer to her sister, glad they were together. "It's okay, Gwin." She whispered up at her sister, smiling quietly. At least, I hope so....

Gwin sucked in air through her teeth. "Watch the ankle, Leah." she hissed. Gwin looked to Sev, a bit proud of the poor boy. "Way to step up, Sev-erus." she smiled slightly as she caught herself.
The shpinx growled in it's throat. "Good-" it purred, smirking. It shifted so it was more dirrectly in the middle of the path. "Godric's bane, Red and gold, What's my name, And what do I hold?"

Leah bit her lip. What was wrong with Gwin's ankle that couldn't be remedied by a quick healing spell? Stupid maze.
The riddle though - Easy peasy! How could anyone not know this one?

Severus grimaced. A.... Gryffie riddle? How annoyingly ironic. Let's see.....Godric Gryffindor, his bane would be his symbol? A lion, then.... but what does it hold? Severz' glanced down at the sword he carried, then back at the sphinx. It must be.... "A Lion's sword?"

The shpinx grinned. Free lunch today. It slowly rose to it's haunches, and shook it's mane. "And all this time, I hoped you were the smart one, as well as delicious looking." it purred. It lept at Severus, landing mere feet away. "Boo." it cooed gently, it's eyes glistening with malace.
"Idiot!" screamed Gwin, and pulled at her braids in frustration. Now he was going to die because of her. She let go of her sister's hand and shoved the circlet onto her head. "You better work!" she growled as she hurrdled herself at the shpinx.

Leah slapped her forehead. "You idiot!" She yelled, before almost falling over when her sister leaped foreward. Leah stepped over to James and started slapping him soundly across the face repeatedly. "Get in there and do something!"

Gwin slid to an un-graceful halt before the enormous creature. Her eyes were burning with the promise of tears. She opened her arms, and in a trembling voice said, "The answer is a lion's courage. Leave him alone." Gwin felt her thoat clench- She wouldn't let him go. She couldn't take it if someone died because of her. The shpinx was taken aback slightly, but covered it with a smirk. "How brave, but no, he must pay for your choice." and it lept. Gwin screamed loud enough to wake the dead, and fell to her knees. Anything to distract it, but then realized that she was screaming from pain. Her ankle sprung fire in her body, and her vision blurred. It did indeed catch the shpinx's attention.

Sev grimaced when he realized his mistake, but was even more startled by Gwin's response. Why....?
But then he remembered the sword at his side. Severus drew it akwardly, and raising it high, brought it down on the Sphinx with all his strength. He didn't expect to kill it at a blow, but he certainly didn't expect it spring off as if made of rubber and stick into the wall behind him! But that was, in fact, what it did, carrying him down with it. He swore violently.[ Great idea, Roo! xD ]

Sirius smirked. "You know, I think I will," he said, not allowing himself to be ignored. He wasn't exactly used to this sort of treatment, but it was almost entertaining.
Remus stiffened uncomfortably as a faint scream sounded throughout the maze. "Guys..."
