"Ugh I can never catch the crawdads here, I used to be able to corner them in the shallow pools where I lived before..." She trailed off slowly and looked down before looking around. "Not here though, but oysters are good, and fish."
She looked at him and her eyes narrowed slightly "You know there are REAL monsters out there...not at that shop, but beyond it...otters with fangs and claws and spikes, but they don't use them to protect land or scare of predators...they use them to hunt and tear and kill other...other otters." She frowned and looked down. "They don't go to the shop, because they enjoy their killing to much, they can't stand to eat meat without the sound of screams." She shivered.

For some reason, anger bristled at the thought her being so scared and he wanted to find one of these otters and tear them apart, just to make sure she wasn't scared anymore. "Do not worry, they aren't here in the reserve and if they somehow got in, I would kill them all." he said as if it were a fact.

She relaxed and smiled softly "I have no doubt you would, your a protector!" She stroked his paw and sighed. "You really ought to embrace your weapons and armor when you use them for good. I'm sure your tired of me saying it though, I just wish I understood why you don't see it..."
She shook her head and smiled "Oh well, no point in trying to force my view on another right?" She rolled onto her back to gaze up at his fangs and playfully paw at his chin.

Cornelius wasn't sure what to say to that, because what she said was pretty much true. He spent alot of his time being angry for being what he was and using others as an outlet for his anger. But maybe he could see what she was talking about, what Mistress Ching saw in him when she took him on board.
He 'murphed' lightly when she pawed at his chin and he gently nipped at her paws.

She laughed at the nips and sat up to nuzzle his chin before arching her back and giggling. "Hey those make for a great back scratch." She flopped back down in front of him and smiled. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't tease...your just...its nice to have someone around, to talk to?"
She tried not to sound as lonely as she felt, but she was sure the edge of her voice gave away how badly she wanted a friend. She couldn't make company out of one sadly and she wanted company, she hated being so angry and snappy all the time.

He chuckled at her, smiling very lightly, "You are...right. It is nice to have someone to talk to." he said, folding one paw on top of the other.

"You have your whole family though, that must be nice right? Your mother and father, a brother and sister, and now nieces and nephews!" She smiled up at him her eyes holding a trace of longing for the family she had lost. Xylia was the last of the Silverwave clan of otters, she knew that on the reserve she would never again see her birth home, her territory by right, none of her family ever again.
Seeing the families that made their lives on the reserve made her wonder if she could somehow recapture what peace she once had.

"Hmmm...I suppose it is nice." he said thoughtfully, gazing off. He suppose he was pretty lucky, having a family like his own. He was just too caught up in his anger to really see it. Maybe he should apoligize to her.

"You suppose?" She looked at him with mild surprise and sighed shaking her head. "Your lucky..." She trailed off and shrugged slowly sitting up and wondering how many otters had their family close and never realized how lucky they were.

"What about you? What about your family?" he asked her, looking to her when she sat up. He flicked his spiky tail through the grass, cutting it up.

"My family..." She sighed and looked down trying to force the words out, the words, the story she had held in her heart. She slowly moved to lay back down and watched as his tail flicked through the grass.
"We lived far from the oasis, the Silverwave clan, our dens were built from stone, large stones high above the riverbanks. We had all that we needed, fresh food, warmth within our dens...we lived rich and spoiled lives. There were few warriors in the Silverwave clan..." She took a deep breath. "My father ruled us in a quiet time, a time of peace...we couldn't have known that otters far to the south coveted our peaceful banks. They came one hot day, they adored the heat of summer, and the open sky, they hated our stone dens and so they destroyed them. They destroyed everything, and everyone..."
She looked down into the grass "Except me...I was to return with them, but I would never go to live with the clan that had destroyed my own. I ran, and ran, they thought I would die before I ever reached water. I might have, but something picked me up, wind brushed my fur, and when I woke up I was here...in the oasis..." She sighed.

Cornelius was quiet as she explained who her family was and where they lived. He felt himself becoming incredibly angry after she explained what had happened and he wanted to leave the reserve and find these otters and kill each and everyone of them slowly. He would have to be extra vigilante now, especially if these otters came to the reserve and tried to take Mistress Chings territory, though he was pretty sure an Elder as big as her could hold her own in a fight.
"I am sorry Xylia....if I had any power, I would bring your family back and maybe you would be happy again." he said softly.

Xylia sighed and gave a slight shrug of her slender shoulders "I've come to understand I suppose...in a strange way I know that I'm lucky to be alive. I learned not to underestimate the abilities of others, their greed, their jealousy. Yet I also know that my family loved me and fought though they knew in the end they might fail. Home was worth fighting for, and now I guess...this is home..."
She looked around as if uncertain about the Oasis, her heart was not yet bound to this place. Home was where the heart was, and she longed to find something in this safe haven to love.

"Over time this place will become your home, I know it." he said as he stood up, arching his back as he stretched. He had to go check up on someone and make sure she didn't get herself into any trouble.

"Thanks..." She watched as he stood and realized that their time had come to an end, the thought was upsetting. She wanted more company, more of his company to be exact.
"We'll talk again sometime?" She half asked half stated, with uncertainty.
