“That,” Andeon wiped a pit of zombie blood off of his hand and onto the side of his boxers, “was the art of the Double Ta-”

The arrival of Elle interrupted Andeon, but before he could bend down to pull the broken bottle out of Elke's face, the situation had been defused. And by defused, he meant the situation had been beaten to death with a ******** baseball bat. Andeon had watched first in terror as Mackenzie walked towards Elle, then with a mix of relief and despair as she handled the situation like some kind of Resident Evil veteran.

Except, Mackenzie wasn't just killing a zombie. This wasn't some faceless horror that jumped out from behind the bushes, startling you into trigger-happy button mashing. This was Elle. This was somebody she had loved, somebody she had already endured losing once. If Andeon had asked himself if he could do the same – could he kill Fallon, even if she was already dead – he knew the answer. No, he couldn't He would have died where he stood sooner than he'd be able to lift a weapon against her.

Mackenzie was stronger than he'd ever imagined.

“Piper,” he said lowly, glancing down at the wounded girl, “Go with Yahya, okay? We'll meet you guys at the gym.”

A moment later he was kneeling next to Mackenzie, wrapping his arms around her shoulders as she held Elle's body. He was holding her tightly, giving her the time she needed to mourn. He smoothed her hair with one hand, closing his eyes as he grieved alongside her. Not for Elle's pain, nor for her death, but for the pain that seemed to grip Mackenzie's heart like a vice. They were teenagers, ******** teenagers. They should not have to endure this.

Nobody should have to endure this.

“Mackenzie,” There he went again, using her full name. His voice was soft, thick with a compassion that few others ever got the chance to hear, “We need to go. It isn't safe out here. We can't help her now...”

They never could.

Micky let out a shaky sigh, closing her eyes, those warm arms comforting. She couldn't say the same about the corpse. Part of her really wanted to cling. She didn't want to let go of that familiar piece of what use to be. Didn't want to let go of that person who had been ok with her, all of her, not just the student council rep, not just the flirt, but the drinker too. Another part wanted to shake the corpse in her hands, scream at her, accuse her of being so stupid, for being selfish and.. And yet she just couldn't. Because none of that made sense, no matter how much better it might make her feel, if only for that instant.

"I know."

Sighing again, she let her shoulders fall, shaking her head and staring down at what was once Elle. Slowly, very slowly, she untangled her hands from that black hair, resting the corpse back on the floor, turning to face the boy. Meeting his eyes, the floodgates were released. Tears trickling from the corners of her eyes, she practically lunged at Andeon, wrapping her arms around his neck, holding onto him. Because she needed something solid and warm and who knew what she was going through, who had been through the same ordeals. Surviving a poison, watching a girl die, smashing a dead corpse, killing your best friend, ex lover, neighbor, etc... what normal human being couldn't take all that and walk away with a smile?

She just... needed a second.

"Don't you dare die on me," She whispered, "I'll never forgive you if you do."

Surprisingly... she meant it. Over the time she had spent with the boy, no matter how forced some of the occasions, Mack was beginning to find she actually... liked him.

Glancing up from his shoulder, she gave Andeon a wistful smile, reaching out til her fingers found her bat, standing up. "Thanks Andeon," She replied, reaching down to clasp his hand, helping him up.

"C'mon. We've got... zombies to kill."

It still hurt. God ******** it hurt. But realistically, in a zombie apocalypse, losing yourself in sorrow was just not an option.

"Mhmm," was all she said to Andeon as he told her to go, her eyes lingering a little over the scene in front of her. It didn't make sense, but when did anything with deep emotions make sense to Piper? She had a very vague concept of love in the normal sense, but when you threw in dead lovers and baseball bats she was completely lost. The sight of the brave girl cuddling the zombie was enough to send her into a full blown headache, aided by the pain radiating from her shoulder.

So instead of trying to figure it out, she simply turned and started to head towards the gym as everyone was babbling to do. She certainly didn't want to be bitten again, that was for sure. "Yahya," she turned to look for him, one hand still covering her shoulder. The other she used to motion him towards her, though she still held tight to her shoe string.

She felt tired and not at all excited, which was very unlike her. The thought put a frown on her face, and she sluggishly began to follow the rest of her friends to the gym, chewing on her bottom lip as she went.

Andeon let her cry.

He let her cry because, really, what else was there to do? There were no words that could bring Elle back, no quietly whispered phrases that could take away the things that Mackenzie had seen or done. All of the talking in the world would not get them out of Barren Pines or make their lives – however short they both feared they might be – normal once again. He did not tell her that it would all be okay. Nothing was okay. Nothing was fine. Nothing was alright. He respected Mackenzie enough not to patronize her with something they both knew was bullshit.

So he just held her, smoothed her hair, and let her cry.

“Come on,” he laughed quietly, “You've been trying for years to get me to shut the ******** up. I didn't survive all that verbal abuse just to die before I get the chance to be the last man alive and repopulate the Earth.” Grinning like an idiot, he got to his feet with her assistance. Together, they headed to the gym to find the others.

One moment of weakness, one moment of grief. It was a lousy memorial to a fallen friend, a fallen lover, but it was all that could be spared. There was no time for feeling sorry for oneself.

Not in Zombie Pines.
