She looked uncertainly into his eyes. "Should I wait outside for you?" she asked in an uncertain tone, just pleased to have someone finally to make the decisions for her.

He heard the tone and recognized the need to be led. It was the same tone and expression that he had seen countless times in his people. "Yes," he told her. "Wait outside. I will take care of this."

With one last look at the lump, she turned and slowly walked out, glancing over her shoulder at him as if wanting to be reassured that she wasn't alone. She stopped and said without looking at him. "You will join me outside, won't you?"

She nodded once and continued out the doorway.

He waited until she was completley out of sight before heaving a heavy sigh. He took a moment to brace himself before he brushed the ash aside to find… a shattered egg. The poor child had never had a chance to live… Swallowing back his own horror and pain at the sight, he gave the child a proper burial, as best he could, then made his way outside to meet with Tesia.

She watched him emerge from the building, debating whether or not to ask if it was anyone or just a rock. She prayed it was just a rock. Not sure whether she wanted to know or not, she started to ask, "What… was it any…" and choked on the words.

"It was a rock," he lied. She didn't need to know. No one needed to know. The horror of what had happened was enough without concrete evidence of the lives lost.

She sagged slightly, her wings drooped in relief. "I'm trying to be brave, but I don't think I can go back in there. Do you need any help or… or anything?" she coughed.
