i definately love the way you worded that, it even makes me second-guess some of my own assertions from before. smile
though, to be clear again, i never said that Body Mods need a deep Spiritual meaning... i even blatantly said that they don't nessesarilly have to. just that they be thought of to have some personal purpose, be it from simple decoration to memories.
but in the case that they DO have a Deep Spiritual meaning, that meaning doesn't need any clear definition or explanation either. because it's meant for the Wearer (and/or the Artist), and is personal to him/her. it only needs to resonate with the one who got (or drew) the tattoo.
hm... i think i still for now wanna stick to my assertion of Body Mods being like Marriages... but i definately have to consider what you said... about it being alright to just change it out, let it heal... it goes against my opinions of Respect for your decision to get Inked in th efirst place, but you word it in a way that is hard to argue....
dude, this is like the dilemma i had over how i feel about abortion! xd i bet it's gonna take the same course too, several years of thinking about it, before finally settling on a more Conservative-yet-Progressive personal stance.

Tattoos DO take more thought than piercings, since you very much are stuck with tattoos for life. Sure, you can get laser surgery to get it removed, but that's expensive and painful, very much more so than the original tattoo.
Piercings can just be unscrewed, and they're gone. No harm no foul. But tattoos are inked under your skin, so essentially, you are stuck with them for life. Piercings are much easier to get on a sort of whim, rather than tattoos gotten on a whim. If you DO get a tattoo on a whim, get it somewhere not easily visible, and get something sort of generic, like flowers. I have a thing for flower tattoos, obviously. sweatdrop

hmmm... sad maybe i'm just having issues with the Respect thing, and Pride... i just can't get over a discomfort with the idea of getting a hole in your body only to let it heal up without a second thought.... i can understand if it's like with the attitude of getting it in the first place, an essesntially permanent change to the Body.... but i guess it's all in the approach.
to me, everything is shades of grey, but Respect is important, including Respect towards the actual Modification itself (or it's Spirit, if your an Animist like me).

What about buying a shirt, then deciding you don't like it as well as you did in the store, so you donate it or give it to a friend? Is that as much of a waste as a piercing is? It may be less permanent, but kind of along the same vein. Or what about dying your hair. You liked the color in the store, then on your head it's different. Is it bad to dye over it? To me, piercings are interchangeable. You CAN change them, so why not do so? Tattoos you can't change, other than cover up. You can't remove them. Piercings are not really permanent. Sure you might be left with a scar, but those fade over time and you can get over-the-counter scar reducer creams and gels nearly everywhere, and they work amazingly (in my experience). So again, it's not disrespecting yourself or the piercing practice to decide you don't want a certain piercing anymore, take it out and either leave it out, or get something else.

Okay, I've learned that it isn't called gauges, but.. where I live, everyone calls it "Gauging".
I know stretching in the proper word.. however.. What would I call the jewelry that goes into my stretched ear lobes? I know there are some called "Tunnels" and "Plugs", but.. I have neither, so I'm not sure what I would call mine. xD
Pet peeve: When stretched lobes become smelly. It's so annoying. It's always there, no matter how much you clean them. D:<

D:<They are all called plugs, tunnels, spirals, seraphins, most of the time when you buy jewelry, especially off good sites, it will tell you what the style is. But as a catch all term, if they are not tunnels or plugs, you can just call them "hanging styles". 3nodding

You can also wear CBR or "Closed/Captive Bead Rings" or horseshoe rings/circular barbells in your ears. They look like this: CBR Horseshoe/Circular barbell The only way they would "infect" your ears is if you're allergic to the crappy metal, which is actually fairly common. So that means it's not an infection, it's just irritation/allergic reaction. If they are surgical implant grade steel or titanium, they shouldn't bother you. Anything less than those materials probably contains too much nickel, which is what you'd be allergic to. You can also try wearing glass or other organic styles and see if that makes it better. Avoid acrylic at all costs.

Most surgical steel has a VERY small amount of nickel; so it is possibly you have a super bad nickel allergy. >3
Try to find higher grade pieces or titanium. XD

❝I used to wear circular barbells in my ears, but they would infect when I used those, for some reason.
Now I use spirals, kinda like this:

I think you're confusing infection with irritation/allergic reaction.
Infection is pain, redness, excessive heat around the piercing, oozing green or "spicy mustard" foul-smelling actual PUS, among other symptoms. A TRUE infection can only be treated by a doctor with prescribed antibiotics.
Irritation is a bit of redness, itching, oozing a clear or white fluid (this is called lymph, NOT pus), and maybe some soreness.
Allergic reaction is pealing around the area, redness and irritation, possibly itching.
Which one sounded more like what you had?

❝The first one.
edit: I ended up having to remove my piercing from the infected ear, then I had to re-stretch it from a 12g back to 8g, cause it had gotten too swollen and tightened up too much to fit an 8g back in.❞

If it were an infection, changing the jewelry wouldn't fix anything. You'd still be infected no matter the jewelry you wore. So wearing CBR's doesn't give you an infection, whatever you did caused the infection in your ear.
