There's nothing wrong with enjoying a good nap now and them. I myself, am mostly like the two polar opposite characters: Lee and Shika.

Like Lee I set very high standards for myself and work my a** of to achieve them. I truly believe with all my heart that hard work can surpass genious.

But I'm also like Shika, because when I'm not working I like to be curled up on the couch all nice n cozy...because work is important, but rest is equally important.

So no, Shika's not lazy...he's just laid back.

And I think you're right in some aspects...Shikamaru isn't lazy but that doesn't mean that Shikamaru will do things unless required to do them. If he doesn't think it's necessary that he do something, he just simply won't do it. I think it's because of his apathetic attitude towards many things. Why bother with doing anything if it doesn't really matter in the end? Right. Well, I think that's his only problem is that...he doesn't find a lot of things important...or worth his time. Like when it came to school and all, he didn’t do work or test except for the last one which he knew required his efforts to pass. Shikamaru gets by doing what is enough and nothing more because he doesn’t really need to do more than he needs to…he’s already above everyone else without trying so why use up too much energy that isn’t needed. The end. XP

(When he‘s required to do something I noticed that he likes to say this-“How troublesome but it cannot be helped.” ((he wouldn‘t do anything if it wasn‘t for the fact that he HAD to it.))

I love you. This was wonderfull. I hate when people call my Shika a lazy slacker. No one understands and I never have seemed to be able to put that into words.
But, damn, you did it, and you did it very well.

He puts the effort out when it's needed.
For things he's pretty pationate about,, I think.
Like saving his freinds.

Remeber when he had that talk with his father while Neji and Chouji were recovering?
He was seriously beside himself about what happened to them.
And,, that's because he cares.

After their talk,, Shikamaru decided to remain a Chunin,
So that he could always be there.
I think he's willing to sacrifice a little cat-napping for them.:]
At least,, that's what I'd like to believe.

I think he is lazy, but not a slacker, and not so lazy that he doesn't get things done. (That's my problem.) And as someone (I don't feel like going back to check exactly who) pointed out, while he may not be lazy by our standards, he might be by ninja standards. I don't really consider him all that lazy, really--I think he just kind of prefers to sit back and watch the clouds rather than, say, play soccer in his spare time. He's just not very physically inclined.

And then there's how he got through school. You can't forget that. Wish they'd let me do that. But nooooo, I have to go to college after, and I'll need good grades for that...

Yes, he does all those nifty ninja flips and stuff...same as everyone else. In terms of physical capability, I've long felt that he's about average, as a ninja. This much I don't think has as much to do with laziness as it does with the fact that he's not Lee. Part of what makes him so special is that he is able to utilize more-or-less average physical capabilities so effectively that he can operate at a chuunin level at 13.

Also, IQ stands for "intelligence quota." "Smart" is vague and a lot harder to define.

While Shikamaru is not a slacker (except in school), "Genius Slacker" is not an oxymoron. An oxymoron is a term or phrase that contradicts itself. One can be a genius and a slacker at the same time. One is an official genius at an IQ level of 140. Even if Shikamaru skipped training all the time (and I sincerely doubt he does), he would still be a genius; he would still have that crazy-high IQ of 200+. Even if he was too lazy to learn, he would still have the ability to. Me, I'm almost an official genius at 137, and let me tell you I am one hell of a slacker. So you could accurately call me the "Near-Genius Slacker."

I mostly agree with you, though. Shikamaru is not as lazy as some so-called "fans" make him out to be. And after the "Rescue Sasuke" arc, I think he really starts working harder to become a better ninja, as well. But I don't think we'll see him playing sports in his spare time anytime soon. And if he ever trains with Lee, he'll probably end up just counting for him.

Really, when you think about, though, Shikamaru is a prodigy. Not as much of a prodigy as Itachi, of course (really, Itachi is just freakish), but frankly I think he's more of one than Sasuke, in a way. After all, as nifty as Kagemane is, he doesn't have that handy-dandy Uchiha bloodline limit, or such prodigious people to train him (Kakashi, Orochimaru). Shikamaru has achieved what he has almost entirely on brainpower.

And hard work, of course.
