Okay. It's rant time. And I think this fits here.

I mention a few things that could be spoilers to those who are not exposed to Japanese media.

Ladies; he's not the laziest s**t in the world.
Example.
Girl: I'm too lazy to [insert ANYTHING HERE, including BREATING.]"
[Start Rant]
It's pretty obvious that Shikamaru has his lazy moments. Napping with his cat on a daily basis, refusing to do school work, and of course, that long, drawn out, obnoxious sigh. And others in the show DO call him lazy. Asuma. Naruto. Ino. Even his best friend, Chouji. So it's gotta be true, right? WRONG. Absolutely wrong. People like to call him the Genius Slacker, and the REAL REASON that's a joke is because he isn't. That's right. "Genius Slacker" is clearly an oxymoron.
Now. Here is supporting evidence that he actually does things. First off, ever see how he fights? Sure, he's complaining half the time, but the other half of the time, he's kicking a**. That's right. Doing crazy flips in the air, throwing kunai, focusing chakra... multi-tasking. Not only does it take mental energy, but yes, MASSIVE PHYISCAL ENERGY as well. In the Chuunin exam preliminaries, he fought the sound ninja referred to as Kin. Now, you guys see the obvious; he used his shadow to slam her head into the wall. That's true. But notice that weird backwards thing he did? Yeah. If you weren't looking at his NUTS, you would have noticed all the weight is going into his ARMS. He weighs what... 93 lbs and is 4'11". Normal, right? Actually, yes. Just about. But a lot of strengh is required to bend that way, and he didn't get that strong from taking naps and being assraped by fangirls.
Another example. Sasuke runs away to find Orochimaru so he can become stronger. Hearing this news, Tsunade appoints Shikamaru to take 4 genin of his choice to "rescue" Sasuke. Choosen are Kiba, Neji, Naruto, and Chouji (six if you count Akamaru). In a previous chapter Sasuke encountered what I call the Sound 5; Kidomaru, Tayuya, Jiroubu, Sakon, and Ukon. These 5, plus another, Kimimaro, are future opponents of the genin and of course our one chuunin. Tsunade knowing this, clearly made a mistake on making Shikamaru's first mission a very difficult one. Anyway, so they search for Sasuke. One by one, they are trapped to fight one of these Sound 5. Chouji with Jiroubu, Kiba with Sakon and Ukon, Neji with Kidomaru, Naruto follows after Kimimaro and Sasuke, while Shikamaru is left with Tayuya. Tayuya, being a master of Ninjutsu and Genjutsu techniques, could have taken out Shikamaru-- no problem. But she underestimates him terribly, and falls for every trap. Soon she releases her summon monsters upon him. There are 3 of them, very large; about 20 feet in height or so, and they suck away physical energy.
I'm sure, "OOO HES SO SMART. HE'LL PULL THROUGH"
Not only that. Listen. And bite your tongues.
These enemies come at him. This is where strength comes in. He does this stupidly high jump, and narrowly avoids them by turning himself in the air. This not only takes strength, but a stupid amount of coordination. To anyone who's curious, she continues to attack him with the creatures controlling them with her flute (her only weapon, mind you) while he runs from her for a good long while. He then has 9 kunai, makes up a crazy plan, and it works. So then she falls into another trap, and is caught in Kage Mane (Shadow Copy). She cannot move. He then uses Kage Kubi Shibari No Jutsu (Basically, "Shadow Binding Choke" Technique) and tries to well... choke her. She escapes with a blast of chakra (YES, you can counter Kage Mane; it's NOT invinsible) and places him into an illusion that makes one of his arms melt off, causing him to scream like a little girl. In the end of it all, he's saved by Temari.
Point is, not only does he exersise, but in telling you this, if you have a brain stem, you also realize, "Man, that took a lot of work." That's right. WORK. Hard, sweating, omg I'm gonna die it's so hard, work. He may have an IQ of 200, but that doesn't make things any easier, which is the SECOND MISSCONCEPTION.
Intelligence. IQ is not intelligence. IQ is how well one can compute. This means he can do much more if motivated to. He doesn't have to. But he does have to try. It's not like... "Oh... wait... I KNOW THE MEANING OF LIFE ON ACCIDENT." It doesn't work that way. No matter how big that IQ number is, you still have to work. Myself, lagging a bit behind at and estimated 136, have to work just as hard as you guys in the 90-110 range (I can assume because MOST people in America are under 110). Having a bigger number doesn't give you more knowledge. All his skills, all his techniques, all his abilities... He had to LEARN those. And believ it or not, a lot of them had to be taught by people smarter than him. If you think smart guys are hot, Kakashi is smarter. Shino is smarter. Their IQs just aren't as high. IQ is a PHYSICAL ratio of basically how well you can calculate something. My being 136 doesn't make me any smarter than a 90 " just cuz." It is just much easier for me to learn, solve problems, and create new paths than it is for someone who's say 85.
This rant covers the main theme. Laziness.
Stop "copying" him.
He isn't lazy ALWAYS, and isn't lazy in every way.
Just in simple, annoying, household tasks. See, the reason why he's considered "smart" is because he's at a level where he realizes a lot of what we do in life is pointless. But that doesn't make him a genius; lots of people see life that way. And it doesn't make him lazy; just smart.

Now, the reason I made this is because I'm a huge Shikamaru fan.
I find it insulting people say they "love" him but don't really know him.
At all. Do a little reading, ladies.

WHEN NARUTO WAS IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER HE SUMMONED GAMABUNTA.
LEARN IT.

Wow...
That just put my thoughts into words so much better than I ever could.
It is so true. I read a fanfic no more than a month ago where Shikamaru was saying how troublesome it was to breathe or do anything. I immediately left the page after reading that.
It was painful to read even that much. sweatdrop

Yes! Someone finally gets my point! I have taken a few quizzes on quizilla and they always describe him really lazy. >_< It's annoying.
Same goes for Chouji! They call him fat and such, but really he's nice and cool. x3
But yea, I totally agree with you.

Shikamaru is just basically one of the sub-main characters, which is why everything said about him is taken at face value( this happens even to the main characters. Naruto's "Believe it!", for example). I loved your rant. I hate it when people don't really think about what they're saying.

Agenta Shikamaru is just basically one of the sub-main characters, which is why everything said about him is taken at face value( this happens even to the main characters. Naruto's "Believe it!", for example). I loved your rant. I hate it when people don't really think about what they're saying.

Im pretty recently discoved a great website where I could watch all Naruto subbed, so I still cant say much about his abilities except from fics and pics. He is an iteresting character that acts more as a human that a shinobi. He relizes what is fear, and what is pain and wont take extreme measures ans some people from squad 7 would....

damn straight. ...or, at least, i agree with the parts i read. surprised
but IQ is precisely that: an intelligence quotient. it measures your capacity to learn. but the impression i got from you is what im agreeing with: its NOT knowledge-what you've learned up until this point. its how far you can push yourself to gain knowledge. ( sweatdrop naruto must have a stamina quotient of 200, at least)
anyway, if shika ever thought training was too troublesome, it would contradict the character kishimoto was going for. you cant be used as a ninja character without some training in that area... shika has the motivation to achieve exactly what he *needs* and no more (excess isnt useful, after all).
the fact that he has (kishimoto gave him) the iq AND knowledge AND skill to make that happen no matter what the circumstances/needs are is really, really impressive.
in any case, gaia is fun because you can pretend to be shika or haku or shino or temari or sakura. you know youre doing a bad job when people get on your back about it, though. wink i promise to grow up, but elementary school was a hell of a lot more fun than college could ever be. xd

I think that the point of him being called "lazy" is that he is lazy... for a ninja. All the flips in the air and physical tasks that you just described him doing? Most of the other ninja in Naruto have been seen doing similar things at some point in the anime/manga. What pushes him past the line of being just an average ninja and into the exceptional is his intelligence.
Yes, it most likely took a LOT of effort for him to train his body to the level required to be a ninja. That is why, to normal people like us, he would definitely NOT be considered lazy. But when judged by the standards of another ninja, he might be.

Shikamaru kicks a**...i remember, after weeing him beat the sound ninja, i was like "hes definately on my "ZOMG!! YER COOL!!!!" list. ninja
