"... Do you think father cheated on mother, and had a scareling with another woman outside, so that's why she told me that father is dead?" She asked, eyes widened as she stared at Mot with a horrified expression; she might had been watching too many dramas on the skelevision lately.

"Er..." Mot stammered nervously. Gosh he sure hoped he didn't just dig up a dark secret of a broken marriage here. "Not necessarily. Let's not jump to conclusions." Even if looking for conclusions was why they were there. "Let's try and find all the pieces first..." The little scareling kind of looked like Shun. But maybe he was seeing things.
"Hey, he almost looks like Shun." He hoped the resemblance would pull her away from her worried thoughts.

"A-alright..." She frowned, trying not to feel too worried; maybe she was jsut being paranoid... She was in the middle of sliding the photo back into the notebook when Mot's comment caused her to pause, pulling the photo out again in order to stare at it, "... Hey it sort of does!"
She paused, staring at the face of the little boil, "DOES THIS MAKE SHUN MY HALF-BROTHER?!"

Mot face-palmed.
"N-no.. we don't know if this is an illegitimate child OR if it's Shun." He offered Lizzy a weak smile, patting her slowly on the head. "How about you decipher that writing, hm?" Best get her mind off of this. He had no basis to refute nor agree with the assumptions anyway. The more they dig, the more they might be able to shed light on it.
"Or should I take that and you go through your mother's journals? I got pretty good at deciphering hand writing due to a certain Valkyrie's attempts at written word."

"Oh... O-okay..." Lizzy nodded, handing the notebook over after slotting the photo back in, "Uh, you take notebook, I take journals?" The latter was probably more 'private' as compared to the former, after all.

Upon closer inspection, the letters in the notebook were written like they were mirrored.Quote: it will take time to actually gain enough trust and credit to climb up this ladder. the yakuza sees me as an outsider. it will be difficult to record down things for the time being. i miss them already, but it can't be-

Mot liked this plan. Looking through a woman's diary was not something he wanted to do. It was better the daughter did it. Now, to decipher this old journal.
Some of the words Mot muttered aloud as he tried to sound it out, noting that it seemed the letters were mirrored. Was that to keep others from reading it? This had to be good then. He continued reading, now aware that Lizzy's dad had been working under cover. Unfortunately, the word Yakuza ran a chill down his back. That was bad news. Now he had to wonder if the mafia had found him out and.. ended him.
The names at the end. Kuroda. He knew that last name. But maybe...
And then the first name. Shun.
"...I was right. That was Shun in the picture. But not for the reason you think, Lizzy." Mot seemed a bit grave. He had a bad feeling about this. "Here.." Mot pulled out a small note book from his pouch and began writing what he could of the journal so Lizzy could read it for herself.
After he was done, he handed it over.

From the journals, Lizzy found out similar things - that her father had left for a job, and although her mother was against it from the very start, he had insisted on going, promising to be back after a few years. They kept in contact via letters, but since it was difficult for her to reply, it was mostly him updating her through letters sent every October - he broke his arm and got to a medic too late, so it had to be placed in a cast for a while, he got in a gang fight with a rival mafia, he found out that the boss had a son. In the last few entries, the ink was smudged in several places, and there were blobs on the paper which looked like a drop of water had fallen, and dried up.
The last entry - something about how he hadn't been writing for three Octobers, and had only sent home a notebook - was never finished.
"... It was Shun...?" She asked, her voice shaking as she looked up from the journal, tears welling in her eyes. She wiped them away with the back of her hand, and nodded, taking what Mot had written. As she read, her expression went from sadness, to surprise, to grief; was this way this was kept a secret? Because he was undercover, and that meant that even after death, his identity had to be a secret?
"I-is there anything else...?" She asked, looking at the notebook.Quote: got the evidence we needed to shut them down but should i send them to hq? i wish i could talk to her. she always knew what to do. i miss them. it's been years. my little ghoul celebrated a few birthdays without me. if i turn this in, i can go home-
--
i can't.
--
one of them saved my life today during the operation at-
--several empty pages, some torn out--
They found out, but it might not be a bad thing, because I can't do it anymore. I can't punish all of them for what some people did... For some of them, this place is the only home they know. They're good people. Shun is a good scareling. I hope he doesn't turn out like his father. He might be able to change something.
Victoria, please hide this notebook from HQ. I had already torn out information they might find valuable, but better safe than sorry. I wish I could hand this to you personally. It's been so long... I miss you.
I'm sorry to have to burden you with this. I'm also sorry that I'll have to break my promise to you... I don't think I can return home anytime soon. Take care of our little ghoul. I will always be with the both of you, wherever I may be.

Lizzy was sad. Mot hated seeing her sad. His heart fell as she read it, wringing his hands together nervously. Had this been a good idea after all?
"Um.. Let me check." Mot nodded, and continued reading the journal. This time he wrote it down in his own notebook as he translated the mirrored letters. The content began to break his heart, knowing what this man went through, the things he'd seen and done, and the final days of his life being scribbled down on paper.
Hesitantly, he handed his notebook back to Lizzy. "He was.. very noble and brave. Your father.."

Lizzy remained quiet as she read what her father had wrote through Mot's notebook; she wondered if things would be different now if he had listened to her mother, and turned that mission down... Maybe he would still be here, and she wouldn't have to grow up without a dad, and her mother without a husband. Although there was nothing on what happened after the notebook was delivered "home", she wondered if maybe the mafia got a hold of him and...
Her chest constricted, and she cit down on her lower lip; he probably did the right thing. She would probably do something similar, if she was in his shoes... That didn't make it seem any less like a selfish decision though.
"M-Mot..." She sniffled, looking at the boil, "You want to become a Bogeyman... What if... What if you were caught in this... In this situation...? Am I supposed to lose you too?" She seemed to deflate, her voice ending in a whine; from what she read, her father was somewhat of a soft-hearted man, much like Mot was... Would he do that too? Would he leave them all behind?

Mot shook a little. Lizzy was worried about him, and for good reason. If he was caught in a situation like her father had been, he'd likely have done what he did. But The last thing Lizzy said struck him hard. Making decisions like that did just as much good as it did bad. It would mean tearing apart one family to save another. It meant making your loved ones forever mourn.
The reaper swallowed hard. "I.. admit I'd probably do the same.." Mot wasn't about to make a white lie just to make er happy. Maybe he should have though. But then if something like this happened, he'd be remembered as a liar, someone who broke a promise. He couldn't do that.
"I don't think he wanted to leave you and your mother behind, and he definitely didn't want you to hurt so bad. But it was the right thing."

More tears seemed to well up in her eyes, threatening to fall as she kept wiping them away; she had a feeling that Mot would say that, but the very thought of him doing that made her want to cry and maybe yell at him. Yell at him for being silly and selfish, but another part of her knew that this decision was his to make... Not hers.
"Why is doing the right thing so hard?" She asked softly, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"If it was easy, we wouldn't have as many problems as we do." People made bad choices a lot, usually because it was easier. That's what made a truly brave and noble person so rare. Mot leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Lizzy in a hug. She seemed to need one. She was holding back tears and fighting not to cry.
"It's okay, Lizzy." He tried to be comforting, petting her hair softly. "I'm sorry."

"Sometimes making the right decision means potentially losing something," Lizzy wrapped her arms around Mot, returning the much needed hug as she closed her eyes and tried not to think too much, "But that doesn't always have to happen... You know..." Like what happened between Mac and Hel. They did the right thing by confessing, but it led to a lot of hurt. It led to a break-up, and for a long time, she couldn't really touch Mac without feeling sick.
"Sometimes we have to hold on to the things we have, lest we regret when it's gone," She added softly, glad that it was Mot who came along with her. Glad that they could have this talk.

Mot couldn't help but wonder if Lizzy's words had double meaning. Maybe he was reading too much into it. Hel's face flickered in his mind, that hurt coming back for a brief moment. He didn't hate her, and he still loved her. If she were to suddenly be gone forever, having not talked to her since that dark day? That would haunt him. Maybe he needed to talk to her again, at least to forgive her.
Either way, he kept her warm in his arms, making sure Lizzy felt safe, comforted and calm. "Maybe that is enough sleuthing for today? I think you found out enough." He wondered if Shun remembered Lizzy's father at all..

"Yeah..." She nodded, letting go of Mot in order to gather the things that they had collected from the attic. Arranging them in her desk drawer, she the locked them up to keep them safe, "Thank you, Mot... I think I wouldn't have been able to do that alone..."
