What action, that Saphira made before ariving at Farthen Dur, would have prevented them from coming in contact with the Varden if it had succeeded?

She tried to eat a pigeon that flew past them while over the valley. That was a messenger pigeon sent by the gaurds at the mouth of the valley to warn the Varden of all that were coming. Had Saphira caught it, they Varden wouldn't have known that they were coming.
