Tino nervously began to play with his claws. "But, he didn't change the world like he wanted to... I thought Cervantes was trying to say that it's more important that you tried than if you accomplish your dreams. I could be entirely wrong, but that's just what I thought..."

"No, you got it right."
Lenore saw something of herself in this melancholy boy, the way she used to be. The way she was when she first changed schools and was so nervous to answer questions out of fear of being wrong. She sat on the couch and gestured for him to sit in the chair next to her.

He sat down, though he wasn't expecting to stay long. He cautiously said, "We all have our impossible dreams, don't we? Mine... Well, I want to keep my love safe. I want to make sure she never gets hurt again." He didn't really know why he was telling someone who was almost a stranger, but he thought it had something to do with the dedication in her book.

"Yes..." Tino was rather lucky that this struck a chord with Lenore, or else she probably would have written him off as a fool controlled by emotions. She thought back to when she first met Felicity... but quickly shook herself out of her reverie.
"Here, I thought you might enjoy this. It's a bit dark, but it really adds to the story," she spoke quietly as she handed The Godfather to him.

Tino was secretly glad that Lenore didn't seem to hear his dream, as he was a bit embarassed for sharing it at all. As he took the book, a large grin crossed his face.
"This was one of my favorite movies. I've always wanted to read the book. My mother used to tell me I was named after Santino Corleone. Anyway, thank you." He cut his rambling short to stand up and head towards the door.

Lenore stood up to see him out and idly said, "I'm not much of a movie person, myself." Opening the door, she added, "Come back when you want something new to read."
Hmm, perhaps this isn't the mental wasteland I thought it was.

Reflecting...
Lenore needed more information before she put her plan into motion, and she knew it never hurt to review the information she already had. Her easy chair was quickly becoming her favorite spot, and it provided a comfortable place to be with her thoughts.
That Fiaran... He's like an uncarved stone, thirsty for knowledge and ambitious. A bit rough around the edges, but that can be fixed. I wonder why he has black hair instead of orange. Tohan-like, isn't it? Hmm. He seems farther along in his transformation than anyone else. Is the lab playing favorites? I doubt it's accidental. Befriending him couldn't hurt in trying to get on good terms with the system.
She took a sip of the coffee that she brought back from the cafeteria. Making a face, she trotted to the sink and spat it out. At least when coffee was hot, she couldn't taste its horribly bitter taste. She regarded herself in the mirror and then sighed.
What serum did they give me? I... don't remember anything distinct about being injected. The tranquilizers must have wreaked more havoc than they thought they would. In anyone else, they would have just been knocked out, instead of having this extent of memory problems. Ugh... If you can't trust your own mind, who can you trust? She found it far more difficult to think about herself than analyzing the others. Am I in denial or something?
Retiring again to her chair, she began to think on the other subjects. The Mulberran. What a character. How did she live this long? I've never met anyone so quick to be enraged. I thought it was the Fiarans who were supposed to be the tempermental ones... Must be through the use of guilt and manipulation that she gets what she wants. I would have thought though that she would have backed off after I made it clear I wouldn't play her game. Then again, how many playmates does she have in this place?
Ah, yes, the best for last. Syrus. I haven't heard anything from him since our first encounter. He would be a dangerous friend to make, but I'd rather be on good terms with someone so intimidating. Befriending him would lose me points with the other two... I suppose it comes down to which I'd rather hold onto: friends or limbs. Well, it's already lost me points with the Mulberran, but I can't be sure about the Fiaran. If, uh, Tino, yes, that's it, is romantically involved with... Rina? I believe that's the Tohan. If he's involved with Rina, it's a pretty sure bet he wouldn't appreciate my being friendly with a love rival.
Syrus himself is still an enigma. Is it possible something went awry with his transformation and the inserted genetic information became it's own entity? It's unlikely, but possible. Far more likely, the alter ego is something he's created in his mind, either on purpose or inadvertantly. Hmmm, what if it really is some sort of artificially created symbiotic situation? Oh, the possibilities for that happening are endless! Is 'Ark' a brain tumor that excretes hormones? Oooh, the possibilities!
As long as her brain was busy, Lenore was happy, and matters of her science made her even more jubilant. She quickly formed a plan of action. First, she would speak with Santino about Syrus's character, as she was sure he'd have plenty to say on the subject. If it was safe, she would then attempt to again speak with Syrus. She was almost certain it would be, though she had learned to expect the unexpected. Lenore was stuck here, and her last plan couldn't be implemented yet, so she had to scheme as only she knew how to do.

Lenore had been looking out her window, so she incidentally happened to see the Fiaran approach. As she had experienced before, her first reaction was to ignore him, but her curiousity overcame. She waited for the knock, and opened the door.
Jesus, he looks terrible. Her concerned expression was automatically buried as she waved him inside.

Tino did, indeed, look terrible. The area around his eyes was puffy, and his hair was shiny with days of built up grease. His eyes themselves seemed resigned, but frightened. He ignored her invitation inside and instead stood uncomfortably on her doorstep.
"I have a favor to ask. I need to see Sarina. I can't take any more just worrying about her," he said as his eyes again began to well up with tears.

This display of emotion made Lenore immediately uncomfortable. She wrapped an arm around his shoulder and pulled him inside, wondering why she was anxious if anyone had seen him crying outside her apartment.
"Come, sit," she ordered, though not harshly.

Tino was too tired to fight, and he sat down in Lenore's easy chair. His problems began to pour from his mouth before he could stop them.
"Syrus attacked her! He attacked Rina," he sobbed. "I don't know how hurt she is, and I wasn't there for her when he struck, and I should have been there! I needed to be there and I wasn't! I wasn't there to protect her! I couldn't protect her when she needed me the most! God help me..."

It was a good thing Tino had his face in his hands, or he might have been put off by Lenore's espression. She was sympathetic, but had no idea how to console a sobbing young man. What compounded her problems exponentially was that she could relate.
She laid a hesitant hand on his shoulder. Lenore wasn't one to lie in situations not related to business, so she said, "I wish I could help you, but I don't work for Saxton. I'm a wayward scientist."
The gender role reversal was the next thing to pop into her mind, but she quickly shooed that thought away. Now was hardly the time to point out to Tino that on a certain level he was acting more like a woman than she was.

Tino's face visibly fell, though obscured by his hands. He turned to look at Lenore, opened his mouth, then found that no words would form.
Useless. Completely useless. This overly analytical thought upset him more. No! She's still a doctor, and I'm sure she can still help.
"Doctor Dobermann...?"

Lenore looked away and cleaned her glasses. "Please... Call me Lenore." It was now she that was having problems keeping in her secrets, which scared her. Returning to her normal thoughts, she began to consider Syrus.
He attacked the Toha-- Rina? He seemed harmless enough when I spoke with him, if not plain intimidating. It's not completely shocking that he would attack her, though, most crazy murderers target the opposite sex of the same race. Hmmm.
"I don't think Doctor Cain would be irresponsible enough to let Syrus go unpunished. The manner of this punishment is another matter. It could be restraining him, or it could just be some kind of physical torture. Even if they do restrain him, Rina wouldn't be able to escape underwater. I'm almost positive now that he's some type of Tohan as well..."

Tino interrupted her thoughts by speaking her name. "Lenore? Syrus has begun his transformation?" He didn't need an answer, he just needed to make the fact real by speaking it. "Rina didn't tell me that. She must have known, too! She must have!"
He sighed deeply. "How am I supposed to help when I don't even know what's going on?"
