There's not much to learn so far -- all you've posted is pronunciation notes, some basic conversational phrases and 15 reserved posts! xd

Someone could at least say something to show me that they still want to learn.

I can't find that word in my dictionary so I don't know.

I need to clean my room, then I'm gunna ride my new bike for a little while, then I can read my lessons again and try to write some for y'all tomorrow. 3nodding

I doubt I can get anything up this week at all because it is Holy Week in the Church. Tomorrow is the Tenebrae (tenebrae=darkness It is at night and the church is extremely dark surprised ); we'll be going down to Chicago for that; then Holy Thursady, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Saturday and Easter Sunday. Hopefully I can something up next week. If not then whoever really wants to learn, start bugging me through PMs.

Isn't it that ecclesiastical latin dosen't differentiate between long and short vowels? Or does it in the same way as classical latin? I started to try to learn classical latin, which apparently has about 2 possible sounds for each vowel, but I can't find any sort of instruction about how to determine which sound to use. So, I've just been pronouncing the classical in the ecclesiastic style. Please explain if you know how to determine the vowel sound, I'm sad and confused. crying

According to sources on Classical Latin, there are two sounds, but whenever I hear it by priests who learning classical instead, always pronounce them one way: long. Also, I have yet to see long vowels in any text except instruction except maybe i done with a double i. I think it's best to just pronounce them all long. The consonants will be different in both though. If you want to learn classical, I'd have a hard time understanding when yo speak it. xd

That help any?

And once again I'm sorry, but I will be busy all Easter season (50 days excluding Sundays) so I won't be able to work too much on lessons.

S'okay.

Yeah, preists speak all the vowels long, because they are using ecclesiastical latin, in which all vowels are long. In classical latin, there is apparently a way to know if the vowel is long or short, but I don't get it. And I don't want to be stupid and read it like english...

Its dumb. I like the classical latin use of consonants, but I also prefer the ecclesiastical latin's vowels. I guess every other nation already butchered latin anyway, I may as well bitcher it some more for myself. Its primarily a written language anyway. 3nodding

Priests usually learn Ecclesiastical. But even those who learn classical use long vowels. But even though classical teaches two different sounds, you never see them written.

I know, thats the problem. So I just have to pronounce classical latin like ecclesiastical latin. But luckily, those 2 are the same, except for that.

But the thing is, I know that those same 5 vowels are the same vowels of spanish and italian (except the open and closed e and o of italian), and since those are descended from italian, it would make me think that latin would have used those same ones. Why'd all the short vowels of latin get 'sploded in modern romance langauges?

You ARE doing well so far. I know you are busy, but it would be useful to have a few more things up. This is helpful to me, because I am taking Latin in school. (required).

I added some vocabulary, but I'm afraid you're going to have to look them up for yourself for now. If there's anything in particular you want me to look up or translate, just ask. Her or PM is fine, though there is a general discussion.

@Vajra B. Hairava: Just use the long vowels.

I do. I just wish I could do it the classical way.

Honestly, with vowels I've never heard any short except maybe i. If you'd like I can keep all the spellings I currently have for you. They're from Wheelock's which teaching Classical. I just use it for grammar and practice really.

Just wondering, have you ever heard Classical Latin spoken? We like to go to the High Mass at St. John Cantius in Chicago so I always hear Ecclesiastical, but never Classical...

Ooh, Chicago, I had a connecting flight through there once!

No, never heard it. Any resources I find are either of people reading it crappily like it was English, like this nasaly voiced lady: http://www.travlang.com/languages/cgi-bin/langchoice.cgi
Or in the ecclesiastical way. And if the real correct way is like that nasaly woman, I'll just drop Latin now. gonk The ecclesiastical way has a much nicer sound to it. its just I know that isn't the most historically accurate way, which bugs my inner perfectionist.
