"Please," she said after a moment while nodding her head slowly. The impact of the news made her feel ill and she didn't want to risk more things happening without her knowledge.

"If you don't mind, that is." Star was raised to be a polite girl and so despite her distress, she was still soft spoken and tried not to be intrusive.

Ace takes a seat and looks across the table "Is there anything we can get you? A drink, food, or something to read even?"

"No, no. I'm fine," she murmured gratefully.

Senaka watched as a group of military men were preparing a jeep for transport. Drawing closer, she asked them what their orders were. Since they knew that she was with Ace, they easily told her their mission was to go to Akila and find the one responsible for the kidnappings. With a nod of understanding, she then asked for something to write on. Jotting down a message, she told the soldier to give it to his General before he left.

A few minutes later, the Noble and her wolf were running through the open sand. The air was dry and the sand hot beneath their feet, but they moved with a speed that was both swift and steady. Akila was only a few hours away and so at the pace they set, the duo would reach the town just before sunset, which hopefully would be when the rest of Ace's men arrived and set up base camp.

Bewildered, the soldier went directly to Ace and delivered the note. Inside the folded piece of paper the note said,

Went to Akila to help. Don't do anything drastic while I'm gone.

As the two run through the sand a couple helicopters fly over them that are carrying the supplies and men that are going to Akila, they would reach the village within an hour at most and by this time Ace had received the message then told the soldier "Go ask General Akar if the reports are correct." The soldier nods and leaves only to return with a document in his hands saying "ClASSIFIED" on the front. Ace sits down and begins to read the document with a small sigh and little look of shock on his face.

Just before sunset Senaka and Suka approach the open markets of Akila. There are still many stalls open, but the shopkeepers are getting ready to pack it up for the day. The Noble could sense a heavy wariness in the village. People rarely walked around alone, preferring to go from place to place in packs of three or more. Eyes darted in fear as the light started to fade and the shadows lengthened.

"Let's get somewhere where we can get a good view of things," Senaka murmured. Climbing up a ladder, they wandered along the rooftops of the town. They could still see the rubble from Akila's last battle. Senaka placed a hand at her side as a phantom pain shot across her middle. It had healed, but still felt tender. Builders, the more daring ones, continued hoisting beams and laying brick to rebuild those that were lost in the bombing despite the threat of night and the current dangers.

Ace's men had already started to investigate around the area and set up a little base outside the village while patrols started to go through the city checking peoples identities as they went along as well as having a Pavelow fly overhead.

Watching the aircraft fly by, the Noble sighs and walks along the shingled rooftops.

"Sure likes to go overboard when investigating something," she murmured. Suka growled as lights appeared on the far side of the village. Signs of Ace's base of operations. The sun had begun to dip beneath the horizon, it's rays like lasers cutting across the still hot sands. The sky overhead had turned a myriad of warm colors.

Villagers now moved in earnest to get indoors as the shadows merged and became more numerous than the slivers of sunlight. The last of the vendors closed up shop and made their way to their various caravans and sheds.

Almost as soon as the last rays of the sun disappeared behind the far away mountains, a scream pierced the air. A woman came running from her home, tears of panic and fear twisting her face.

"My husband! My husband and children! They are gone!!" She wailed over and over again. A few minutes later, another cry as a child ran from her home crying for her parents to come back.

A couple of soldiers checked both houses for clues while the city was put under lockdown "Detective:Hmmmm I wonder where they could be hiding?..." The detective turns around and looks at a wall that has random shadows moving on it. "Detective:Excuse me Sargent. Can you explain how a shadow can move without a person moving an full on lights?"

"Shadow hoppers," Senaka murmured from her perch on a swooping awning. She looked down at the detective and smiled, her eyes reflecting silver flashes in the light. "I knew it wasn't going to be as easy as a slave driver. It's never as simple as all that these days."

Suka howled from above them where she stood on the roof, her keen eyes catching glimpses of shadows shifting slightly. Even her steady gaze was having a hard time keeping locked on their forms as they moved from building to building.

"Alright men hit the lights." A load "YES SIR" Was heard and a helicopter uses some strange machine to light up the entire village and parts around it exposing the shadow hoppers and removing their powers which showed the missing family members being held by them. "Release the civilians and surrender and we will not harm you." The detective says into a speaker phone about twenty meters away from the creatures with every military in the area grouping in on them with no chance of escape while other troops keep their patrols going just in case.

"You are all such children," the Noble sighs as she looks on at the surrounding troops. The shadow hoppers hissed as the lights turned on. Then something unexpected happened, or at least for the soldiers. The shadow hoppers shifted their movements and disappeared again. Even with the lights on, all the soldiers could see were little irregularities as the shadow hoppers moved around corners or shifted behind things.

"Shadow hoppers don't get their name for being able to blend in dark shadows," Senaka spoke softly as she dropped onto the street and walked towards where she figured the shadow hoppers hid. "They were named for their uncanny ability to bend light around their bodies, acting like a cloaking device. It renders them invisible. It's just evolution that made them nocturnal."

Standing beside a closed market booth, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. One hand darted forth and grasped what looked like open air. Except that the air was twisting and writhing like a beast trying to escape. Opening her eyes again, the Noble fixed her quicksilver gaze on the creature before snapping its fragile neck. It went limp in her hand, the cloaking ability abruptly cut off to reveal a slim body with smooth mottled gray skin. It had a long neck and the head of a reptile.

"But they can be scented, if one has the nose to recognize them."

The detective walks up smiling "Thank you miss Senaka. Your assistance was very much appreciated. If you please hand over the creature we can use it to track down others that may come back with our dogs if you are correct on the scent." Unknown to Senaka this creature would later be used for experiments in cloaking devices. "men please escort these people to the infirmary for inspection. Also miss Senaka can you tell us about anywhere they might have taken the rest of the people?"

Locking eyes with the detective, the Noble set down the dead creature after giving it a silent prayer of passing.

"It's late summer, most likely their breeding season. Shadow hoppers lay eggs in host bodies. When the eggs hatch the young eat their fleshy cocoons until there is nothing left, not even bone."

Looking at the buildings of Akila and thinking about the surrounding landscape, Senaka thought about where the villagers had been taken.

"Someplace dark and dry. Preferably where there won't be anybody to disturb them. They might still be alive, if we hurry."
