Minor Memory Sad

He stood there with his back to the tree, head tilted and bangs covering his eyes to hide the tears that wanted to fall. Why? Why didn't they want him? Was he not good enough? Was there something really wrong with him and he didn't know it? How could they sit there and claim to not want him, their first born, and yet want him? His 'brother' wasn't even that much younger then him so their cries about how they hadn't been ready were bullcrap!

*** remembered the first time his dad had ever expressed his pride in him. It wasn't when he was 8 and had hit his first home run in little league. It wasn't when he was 10 and managed to catch his first fish all by himself. It wasn't at 13 when he started high school and immediately joined the JROTC, committing himself to four years of early mornings and added bullshit on top of the typical hell of high school.

It was on his 17th birthday, after cards and before cake and presents. His dad had told him to get in the car, but wouldn't say where they were going. *** waited anxiously as they drove exactly five miles an hour under the speed limit. He couldn't remember overhearing his parents discussing any kind of plans, and Laurie certainly would have let something slip.

***'s hope deflated as his dad parked the car in front of the run-down storefront in the middle of a dilapidated strip mall. He didn't say anything as he rolled the windows down and turned the car off. They sat in silence as *** considered the implications of being here, on this day. He knew what it meant, what was expected of him, and although he would have wound up right here someday anyway, he resented the fact that it was this day.

Why wasn't he allowed even the illusion of a choice? Wasn't he entitled to that much?

Ten, fifteen minutes passed as *** wavered between getting out of the car and going inside and getting out of the car and telling his father to ******** off.

Eventually, he got out of the car and went into the recruiting office. As he sat down and filled out endless sheets of paperwork, he felt his father squeeze his shoulder. "I'm proud of you, son."

She wanted it.

It taunted her from beyond her reach and glistened in the light. The final dessert on the serving tray always had to be difficult. The short girl was reaching, moving. "Okay." She climbed onto the table and her body slipped, the table falling over on itself.

Rolling away she bumped into a pair of legs and looked up with a sheepish grin. "I was hungry?" Her stomach whined in unison and two narrowed, red eyes looked back down on her.

A sinking suspicion made her believe she might be in a bit of trouble and she grabbed the dessert on the floor, stuffing it in her mouth. If that was going to be how it was, at least she'd be full.

Maybe.

"Dude, you watch Doctor Who." #### shot back, a little too loud. The force of his yell had knocked him a little unsteady as he laid on his board several feet from shore. The current was rocking them enough, he didn't want to fall off over something stupid.

Chris gave him a stern glare, as best as he could see through the stupid goggles he wore while surfing, "Doctor Who is at least intellectual programing that stimulates the mind, bra."

"I never imagined you knew those words," he should be laughing but he needed to. "It's a kids program over there just as much as mine is in Japan."

"All they do is fight monsters and wear spandex and yellow out attacks."

"They're fighting for great justice, man! Winning the day with teamwork and.. well, whatever the theme of the season is." #### spat back, very tempted to just flip his friend's board over. "They go through some pretty deep things man, Ahim had to deal with the destruction of her planet and went to become a pirate so that the people of her world would show she's still fighting. And then she confronted the guy who killed her parents and avenged them. Burai actually ended up dying in Zyuranger and Geki later donned his gold chest armor -"

"- Weak dude," His voice was low and monotone, cutting through the monologue, "Kamen Rider is pretty cool though, they get bikes and s**t."

"They get bikes and s**t in Power Rangers!"

"Not as cool though."

Somewhere in the flurry of strikes the arrow that pierced her shoulder shattered. Energy exploding outward with such force she felt the joint shift from the socket itself, pain proceeded, barely, by a sickening pop before her scream echoed it. It made her hesitate, slowed her movements, and although she didn't stop her relentless assault, it did leave her wide open for the hunter to fight back.

The small cuts and slices, so insignificant compared to the wounds at her upper chest and shoulder, were all but ignored as she continued to swing at him. Determined, even with her left arm useless. Of course she didn't feel the sapping drain to her energy. Not until it was much to late.

It wasn't supposed to be like this. Humans weren't supposed to win, not against the great horsemen of the Apocalypse.

She stared at the pale young man, eyes wide, and for the first time filled with fear along with rage. She stared, thin chest rising and falling in shaking, heavy breaths, and finally dropped to her knees. The inky curve of her blade vanishing as she collapsed to her side as darkness stole her vision.

He had a slight smirk on his face as he walked into the middle of the yard. He eyes the target window for a moment as eh rolled the ball around in his hand. Even if he had to pay after wards, this was going to be so worth it. He pulled back his arm and flung the ball forward. A satisfying crash soon followed.

Her boa squeezed tighter and tighter, cutting off his air and leaving him weak and full of questions. He had never known such pain, not pain of the physical variety, but pain in his heart. At least she had told him... No, he didn't want to think about that.

Instead he recalled his first time in the palace. Setting up the fireworks. Waiting until nightfall. Seeing the delight on her face as the colorful explosions lit the sky. Even then, he'd wanted to make her happy.

She said this was for the best. He believed...

He stood face to face with the older boy, both of them only inches apart, glaring with hatred. "You think you can just come in here and mess with me you have another think coming!" he yelled. He didn't care if the other boy was older, was bigger. He just was spoiling for a fight and the jerk had offered one on a silver platter.

"Hey. Are you hurt or just not talking to me?" The soul of her boot firmly planted itself in his ribcage, and she shoved him. Hard.

His eyes opened and she felt him grab her boot. She hadn't expected that. The shock caused her to try and step back, but she couldn't since he had a hold on her foot.

Half a moment later, she was firmly seated on the grass, and her rear hurt.

"I was trying to make sure you weren't dead. Though why I bother I do not know," she scowled. "Why didn't you just answer me the first time?"

Here is was, the hardest part of any game ever created in the history of games. He watched as the screen flashed 'Character Name?' with a determined look. He had been prepared for this. He had thought long and hard for this moment. He started to type in a name. "D-e-s-t-i-n-y."

If his parents hadn't been standing in the kitchen when he'd opened his mail, **** would have whooped with excitement. No more Wailington Heights. No more Duerre. A fresh start.

He might have whooped anyway once he got back to his room, but he'd never admit it.

She had probably spent far more time on this then she should have. She was never really very good at these kinds of things. There was a reason she went to others to have her clothes made, a reason she preferred going to a jewel crafter for accessories or weapons. Sure she could sew when necessary, certainty she could craft her own simple weapons and jewelry, but that didn't mean she was good at it or enjoyed doing it.

And so this. A booth for fright night. The fruit of many days worth of labor, was erected after what had felt like ages past. Each target was hand carved from wood and painted with care. Each dagger had been painstakingly made so that their three weights and balances were exactly the same. Each little feathered accessory to be sold had taken her hours to make, though most were nothing more then simply beads on a string.

One in particular took even longer then the others, one made of teals and blacks, one meant for her good friend. This one was nothing short of a labor of love, of her appreciation for the other woman's kindness and open door. It would never be enough to show how much this particular woman meant to the chieftain, but at least it was a start. She slid the final bead into place and tied the ends together carefully and neatly. She would have to dip the tips of the feathers in bleach to whiten them and then teal dye to finish them off, but for now it was done.

She hoped that Lifen would like it.

"Wait, ####, is that our vacuum?" His sister sounded horrified, utterly so as she dropped the tail she had been trying to put on the back of her short little skirt.

"Yeah, cool ya? I mean, we don't use it so I thought it would look pretty sweet as like the Ghostbusters backpack," he even seemed to do a little pivot to show off his handy work. A homemade costume, bought everything and modified it; patches from online, the jumpsuit from a thiftstore and boots he already had. The energy pack had been the hardest thing to figure out, but when he saw their old dusty vacuum he figured out a way to cannibalize it to get it to look just right. Or at least close enough with enough duct tape, wires, fairy lights, glue and a saw. It was just Halloween.

"But that's our vacuum!" Hana yelled again, very close to hitting them with her accessory.

"Hana, we don't use it. Besides, this thing looks sweet.. better than your costume," he stated, "what are you doing, channeling Mean Girls with that cat costume?"

"Yes!" she screeched, "In fact I am!" This time she did hit him. Really hard.

[Main Blessing 5]

The suitcase in her hand felt like a boulder and she stopped in front of it. It had taken so long but she was here now, staring at it happily. Bouncing once or twice her mind filled with fantasies about friends and classes - oh and the food. Couldn't forget about that.

Lifting it she walked the stairs towards her new living quarters. So long in waiting and the day was here, finally. Taking in a deep breath she entered a hallway and her eyes were wide, figures moving past her and she was in awe. "Hello, Hi!, Oh!" Her mouth was on its own as she passed, moving aside a few larger figures with a grin.

She stood in front of a door a word was written on it. Not a word, her name. "******." She spoke it slowly, feeling the words and pushing open the door. It was just right for her and she entered it. "I am so excited!" She yelled to no one in particular and the door closed slowly.

It was the beginning...

"Come on! Skip the home work A**! You know you want to go swimming with us!" Kristy pleaded as Drew nodded his head with a grin. He looked between the two then looked at the homework in his hands. Swimming or work on school work that was due tomorrow? Math homework that was due tomorrow. He worried his bottom lip a bit as he thought. Swimming or homework? Swimming or homework....? He sighed after a moment and shook his head. "Lets go swimming tomorrow guys, I need to get this done."
