Nightmare: Crystallize

Entry: Crystallize was sad that Lyra wasn't here today, but this substitute lady sure had him excited! She seemed so nice and friendly, and it helped him to not think too much of if his teacher was alright. The word search was fun, but he had a hard time finding all the words. He ended up finishing and turning it in near the end of class, leaving not a lot of time for his reading. Normally when Crystallize finished early, he would just read a book, but today it seemed like today there wasn't enough time.

Nightmare: Snow Ivy

Entry: A word search while the teacher was away? At least it was something. Truth be told Snow would rather be learning something, but a word search was entertaining so he didn't think much of it. It wasn't an easy word search for sure, and Snow found it to be challenging to say the least. He ended up turning it in at the end of class, heading back to his desk in order to get his stuff ready to go.

Nightmare: Jacintha

Entry: A substitute? A word search? Jacintha was okay with both those things, although she wonder what the teacher conference was about. No matter, now she had to focus on finding all the words! As it turned out, this wasn't the run of the mill word search. She had some trouble with some of the words, while others almost seemed to jump from the page. She ended up finishing it three fourths of the way through the class time, deciding on catching up with some work she owed for a different class. With her assignment turned in, she sat at her desk for the rest of the class, finishing up her owed assignments.

Entry: A word search? Really? At least it was a handout... Asimov struggled with the words, squinting at the page as he slowly found each one. It seemed everyone figured it out faster... Oh well. He turned it into Bridget and shuffled his feet about, "I did my best..."

Entry: Lucien's hand writing was sloppy and fast. It was almost as if he was racing to finish all the words in a blink of the eye. Alas, it was evident with how scribbly it looked. Still, he turned it in with pride, "Done! Thanks!"

Entry: Chunli wasn't having a good time with the word search. She quickly found the words that were done in the right order of left-right. Entry: Dessie didn't exactly do all the work herself. Did you expect a goddess to stoop so low as to do a word search? Instead she wooed a few other students and got them to 'help' her with some answers. It wasn't cheating! It was just... using her assests. She turned in the paper without a comment to the sub and left the room, already planning on how to get the most out of the next class.

Nightmare: Nkiruka

Entry: A short story about love was easy for Nkiruka. She didn't need to think for a minute about what her essay would be about--she already knew. She picked up her pencil and started to write.

I’ve felt an awful lot of love in the last year, so I’ve got a lot of stuff I could talk about. I have to talk about my love for my dad, though. When I first met Dad, I was living at an orphanage, and it was just awful. I hated it there, the adults were all mean to me. Dad was the first nice adult I ever met. I didn’t love him at first because I didn’t know him. But as I got to know him better, I started to love him more and more. He cared about what I cared about. He loved rock and roll like I do, but that’s not what I mean, what I mean is that he was always asking me about what I like and what I want, and that was very nice. I started to love him a lot the more I got to know him. I handled that love by hoping and praying that he’d adopt me so that I could be part of his family. I daydreamed about it a lot. One day, he came to me and he told me that he was adopting me and that I was going to come home with him! My prayers were answered, and I was very happy.

Nkiruka looked over her entry and nodded. Yup, it said everything she needed to say!

Nightmare: Heru

Entry: Heru frowned. This was hard. A time she'd loved someone? But...she loved so many people! And it wasn't as if there was any single event that made her love another person! Love didn't work like that, did it? Well, okay, it had for her parents, but that wasn't the same thing!

I don’t really feel love for someone only once like it’s a bolt out of the blue or something, but I’ll try my best.

My big brother, Darryl, doesn’t like it when people show him affection. I’m not sure why. Sometimes he’s just a really big grump. Sometimes I think it’s because he likes feeling miserable. I hope it’s not that, though, because that’s kind of a rotten thing to think about your older brother, or, really, any sibling at all. I love him anyway, because he’s my big brother, and he’s the only big brother I’ve got.

When I was really little, like, before I was awakened, my big sister Evelyn moved out of our apartment to live at the dorms. Darryl and I were the only kids in our apartment, so I didn’t have anyone else to play with but Darryl. Darryl doesn’t like to show affection, but that’s okay, because I could show him lots of affection all of the time. I handled (well, handle, really) my love for my brother by always showing him that I love him a lot. I ask him for advice and I talk to him, I help him out with stuff like cleaning his room or finding stuff for him. When he wants to watch something on TV, I remind him when it’s on so that he doesn’t forget that it’s on (he does that a lot). Sometimes it’s hard, but it’s always worth it to have my big brother.

She put her name at the top of the paper and handed it in, satisfied with a job well done.

Entry: Thalia sat in her seat, wriggling and chewing on the end of her pencil as she debated what she wanted to write for the substitute. 'My family is my love. My momma is the best momma you could have. Kind and caring. Attentive. My big sister kinda gets annoyed with me when I follow her around, but she's really great! But the person I love most is my brother. He's my best friend and such a hard worker like momma is! He's my hero and I'm his cheerleader!' She stopped and looked over what she had written so far, giving a satisfied nod at what she had written. This was something she'd be happy to turn in.

Nightmare: Aedus

Entry: User Image Aedus looked down at his paper love. That was and wasn't a tricky subject. He started to write "Well I of course, love my parents, even though they drive me crazy sometimes, even when I'm angry at my mom I always love her. I love my familiars every one of them, when I feel like no one else understands how I feel and the world is the worst place ever, my familiars are my comfort zone. They don't judge me or boss me around for the most part." Aedus wasn't sure he wanted to write the next part since it was well not a subject that he was really comfortable with yet. "Umm well I'm not sure if it's love but uhh.. well.." Aedus wrote down the next part that had to do with Niamh but then erased it, since he didn't want anyone else to know that he had feelings for the pretty fey. She meant a lot to him and he didn't want anything bad to happy to her, besides she was the only one he had ever given a familiar to, she was special Aedus just had a hard time allowing that not to be an erased smug on his assignment paper. Aedus worked up the courage to write the rest of his paper. "I love all kinds of familiars from aether jellies to slimes they are amazing wonderful creatures." "There is someone else I love but I'm not sure I'm ready to tell them or anyone else who that is or really talk about it. She's a great person, pretty, kind, even when I was being a grumpy jerk, she still stood by me, and I really care about her a lot and want to make sure she's safe."

Nightmare: Evelyn

Entry: Evelyn got straight to work on her essay, occasionally scratching things out, but eventually getting it all hashed out. She copied it again on a nicer piece of paper and turned it in.

I grew up in Asphodel my entire life, so Hunter’s Jubilee is very familiar to me. I know some people, like my friend Lillian, who have had to be introduced to it and get used to it, but I never had to, because I just knew it from the beginning.

Hunter’s Jubilee is all about love. A lot of people think it’s just about romantic love, but it’s way more than that. Hunter’s Jubilee is about all kinds of love, from the love you have for your friends to the love you have for your family. It’s even about the love you have for your pets! It’s very important to celebrate this love because love is the best feeling in the world. Love makes you stronger than you were already, it makes you confident, and it makes you happy. It gives you drive to move forward, as well as a firm foundation to spring from. Love can give you power when you have no other power. An emotion like that is very important, and it absolutely deserves its own holiday. I am grateful that we have a holiday that celebrates such an important thing. Sure, other holidays are nice, but do any of
them represent something as wonderful as love? I don’t think so. Mostly they represent the changing of the seasons, or even just themselves! They’re just not as nice as Hunter’s Jubilee (even if they’re sometimes more fun!).

Username: Geyser Eelborn
Nightmare: Lillian

Entry: Lillian thought about the essay for a while before writing it. She had a lot to say, and a lot to unpack!

When I first came to Asphodel as a child, Hunter’s Jubilee was very new to me, and for a long time, I’ll admit it—I didn’t like Hunter’s Jubilee. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the decorations, though they can be a little garish, or that I didn’t like the tradition of handing out arrows to everyone (leaving some people feeling left out). I think what bothered me about it was that it was a religious festival, somewhere underneath all of that, and one that celebrated a god that I do not worship. I am a Nixie—the Nine are not my gods. My gods are the gods of the tides, the deep, the currents, the moon, and others. I do not worship the Hunter, Kallistos.

As I’ve gotten older, though, I’ve begun to realize that most Nightmares are like most young Nixie—the religious aspect of the festival has been forgotten in favor of what it represents. Hunter’s Jubilee represents not only love, but the declaration of love. It represents reminding people that you care about them and all of the myriad reasons that they love you. We love people all year ‘round, but we very rarely remind the people we love just how much they mean to us. That’s what Hunter’s Jubilee is, in my mind. Hunter’s Jubilee is a festival for bringing people together as families, as lovers, and as friends, and for that reason, it is a very valuable festival indeed. I am looking forward to Hunter’s Jubilee this year with my friends.

It wasn't a very good essay, and Lillian was worried that she hadn't hit all of the points that Miss Lyra wanted her to hit, but she'd said about all that she could say about it for now.

Username: Geyser Eelborn
Nightmare: Mary

Entry: Yeesh. What a subject! There was nothing quite like writing an essay about your least favorite holiday in class, hm? Oh well. She pulled out her pen and got to work.

I will be honest with you, Hunter’s Jubilee is not my favorite holiday. I would be hard-pressed to name my favorite holiday, but Hunter’s Jubilee is most certainly not it. I find the decorations garish, the sentiments trite, and the trappings—specifically, the songs, movies, and books—more than a little over-done.

That is not the subject of my essay, however. The subject of my essay is why it is important to celebrate love. Love is often said to be the universal emotion. Every race values love above all else—be it love for a lover, love for their home, or love for money. Love is the foundation of every society. Why?

I think it is because love gives us an attachment to something. Without love, we would be cast adrift in the universe with nothing. It would give us nothing to justify ourselves with and nothing to navigate the cosmos with. Without a love of some kind anchoring yourself to reality, you cannot make decisions with any sort of continuity. You cannot have goals, you cannot have an endgame in mind. Your decisions, without love, are nothing more than random flailing in a cold, cruel, and uncaring universe. Love gives your decisions meaning and direction. Something as powerful and universal as that is well worth celebrating, then, even if the holiday is all a little too sickeningly sweet.

Mary looked over what she'd written and smiled. Okay, so she was lying in there. She loved the dumb books--or at least, the dumb romantic novels. They were her guilty pleasure, okay?! Miss Lyra did not need to know that, however.

Username: Geyser Eelborn
Nightmare: Xyla

Entry: Xyla squealed in delight inside. Hunter's Jubilee, that was her favorite holiday! She got to work straight away, scribbling all of her feelings down on the paper.

Hunter’s Jubilee is, in my opinion, the most important holiday of the year. I’ve celebrated it my entire life (so far as I know!), and it’s always been my favorite holiday, though I suppose I say that about every holiday during its season!

I might actually mean it about Hunter’s Jubilee, though. Love is a very important emotion because of the way it makes you feel and the way it makes you act. Love can transform you into a different person, and make you feel different from how you ever felt before. If you’re feeling terrible, love can bring you back to your feet, even if it’s just a simple love like your love for a friend. If you’re feeling lonely, love can fill you up and make that loneliness just disappear. Hunter’s Jubilee celebrates love and its power, and encourages you to harness the power of love, too, by telling people that you love them—especially if they never knew it before! Hunter’s Jubilee is a time for experiencing love and giving it to others (which is really the best part of love, when you think about it!). Love is a wonderful thing, and I am so happy that it’s the time of year when it isn’t considered silly to love everything. That’s a problem with our world, I think—love of the kind we show this time of year gets ridiculed so much, called garish or childish or suchlike. But love is the most wonderful thing people can experience. Why would anyone want to knock that? Why do people think that it gives them power to think that? I really can’t fathom that opinion at all.

May your Hunter’s Jubilee be a beautiful one!

Nightmare: Salacia

Entry: User Image Salacia cocked her eyebrow looking at the assignment love right, well she wrote

"I love my hair, I love my eyes, nose, all my features are lovely. I love my markings, I love my skill at acting. I do not have a person that I love though there was a freshling that was amusing but I haven't seen them in a long time, so I don't know if that counts as someone to love. I suppose I love my family, they serve their purpose in my life. I love the things in my dorm they are very pretty and I love the mirror in my dorm room it is shiny and shows off my lovely scales perfectly. Perhaps someday I will find a being a love but for now, the things I love are what I listed. I'm not a very mushy person so I will not gush about loving someone since I have no one I love like that." Salacia wrote her paper and went to turn it in.
