Heret listened quietly as Lumi told the tale of the Grinch. "He sounds like a stupid old coot who wasn't loved as a child." The herla stated when finished, chuckling softly. "But then again, if he stole the stockings, then we won't even have to worry about it because he'll just give them right back." The blind herla joked softly. "It is an enjoyable tale though."

Lumi gave a dreamy little smile and looked at the blind Herla, her eyes went soft as she thought about her little sister and brother listening in awe to the story. "yes..." she said, her voice whistful and light, "yes, it is a wonderful story, my mother used to tell me and my little brother and sister the story every year." She sighed as the feeling of nostalgia passed from her being. "Unfortunately though, it is just a story and i'm afraid just simply singing a few lines together will get the stockings back. Pity though because it was a rather cute song."

"Wouldn't it be nice if all troubles in the world could be vanquished with a simple song?" Heret asked softly, still smiling, before he sighed. "So you have a brother and a sister? That's nice. I have an older brother. Although.... It's been awhile since I've talked to him..." He looked saddened, his smile shrinking. "But it doesn't matter. I'll talk to him again eventually." Hopefully.

Lumi cocked her head to the side slightly as she regarded Heret for several moments before shaking herself out of her thoughts. "Yes, it was extremely nice having younger siblings, though for a few years i played the role of a second mother, so we were very close. Unfortunately though, travels keep us apart." She got a breif sad look on her face before changing it into a joking grin. "It's a good thing though, those two love getting into trouble, it was easy getting them off the hook in a place where we knew everyone, but i would hate to see what kinds of things i'd have to do to keep them safe out in the wild."

To all Iris' extent he had a sad expression on his tiny delicate face as he had listened to the story. "That's so sad. That poor Grinch... he must have been lonely and wanted attention so stole the presents from Whoville." To all his credit he hadn't really though the Grinch a bad person just misunderstood.
"Maybe the Grinch took the stockings so we could go after him and bring him gifts of our own. Lets get some apples and take them with us. He'll be hungry!" Iris chimed circling himself as he looked for any signs of an apple tree. His moth companion chose that moment to flutter away and Iris wasted no time giving chase. "Oh no... come back!"

"The Grinch? I doubt it; he's just a story!" Bane snorted at Iris. The Herla could no longer keep quiet at the story of the Grinch. He hardly liked stories, but the story of the Grinch had interested him. He was unsure of which side to take, though. The Grinch or the Whos? Did it matter? He glanced at the others.

"I bet. Younger siblings can be a handful. I know I drove my older brother crazy sometimes." Heret smiled, shaking his head as he thought back before he was distracted by another voice. His smile widened as he listened to the naive herla, "If the Grinch stole our stockings then I'd advise waiting until he brings them back before giving him gifts. You shouldn't reward someone for bad behavior, then they'd just do it again." The blind herla stated lightly, before his ear flicked towards yet another voice. "You never know. In every story, there is usually some degree of truth."

Taz sighed. They had gotten too distracted. She was going to have to say something. "Remember that the only evidence we have is a set of footprints. The grinch is only a story so far. If we think a grinch did it, then we need to find more evidence to that effect. What kind of creature is a grinch? What kind of evidence would it leave of its prescence?" she asked.

Barsuishou listened to the sily jabber around her. Seems no one was very civilized. "A Grinch seems like perhaps he could have. But if it is just a story, it must have some basis on fact." She wondered vaguely where her sisters where...

Makaio stood still for a while, listening to the jabber, twirling his ears around in the direction of the nearest conversation. When it seemed like they'd gotten derailed enough, he turned his head to the footprints.
"I have a pretty decent sense of smell," he said in the same distracted tone he had earlier, as though he wasn't even entirely sure of who he was talking to. "I mean, I could try to track this critter-thing. Try being the operative word." He turned his body towards the tracks, then paused in his footsteps, leaning towards Bara and whispering in her ear. "Makaio, by the name." He nudged her neck with a slightly larger smile. "Nice to meet you."
And as soon and as unexpected his moment of friendliness had been, his fawn-like high trot over to the pawprints was just the same sort of impromptu action. He lowered his head, flattened his ears slightly, closed his eyes, and sniffed.

Bane sighed. "Lovely. We have yet another crazy among us." He motioned towards Makaio, who was sniffing the ground. He rolled his eyes. and approached the others.

Lumi's smile had vanished and been replaced by down cast eyes and an indifferent lip setting (not a frown but not a smile, you know, the inbetween) as everyone called her story nothing more than a story, she wondered momentarily if any of them realised she'd just been trying to lighten the mood of the area. she sighed lightly and nodded her head in agreement with everyone, "True," she said, a less cheery tone in her voice, "It may just be a story, but you all are taking it far too seriously, it was only meant to entertain... but who knows, maybe it really was a grinch? after all, weren't we, at some point, just a story in the dead cities? And now look at us, alive, and real? couldn't there, in some oustanding magical way, be real too?" She smiled darkly for a moment before looking up at all the Herla that were suddenly around her and turned her head to gaze upon them all. "Have you all becme so hardened, or lost so much of your childhood, that you can not even SLIGHTLY beleive in magic?" As the realization of what she'd just said washed over her, Lumi's face deepened from a light blue to a dark purple (she blushed) "but then again... magic is just for fawns... and also completely off topic..." she quickly mumbled as if that would save her. She quickly lowered her head and tried not to look anyone in the eye, feeling absolutely the fool, and completely out of character for how she normally felt.

Bane grumbled. "Magic? Magic is a lie that mothers teach their fawns, making their hopes rise and then be crushed when they discover it false. So no, I do not believe in magic." He turned away.

"We believe in ghosts, don't we?" murmured Rook, more to himself than anyone else. "Magic is what you make of it... but also irrelevant to the current case." The last phrase was less dreamy, a brisk no-nonsense tone creeping into his voice. "The attempt to lighten the mood, while appreciated... well, perhaps we should keep our focus on the situation at hand? What evidence we actually have?"
He trotted forward to join Makaio, shooting Bane a disapproving look and flattening his ears in annoyance as he moved past and heard the snippy remarks. It was any Herla's right to be ill-tempered inside the privacy of his own thoughts -- but speaking those thoughts aloud and deliberately antagonizing the fellow searchers was neither useful nor appreciated.

"Oh, don't be such a sorefoot," Makaio huffed to Bane, rolling his eyes beneath their lids as he lifted his head slightly, then added matter-of-factly, "I thought the story was cute. I always liked old myths like that. Besides, don't you think you should give magic a little credit?"
Lowering his nose to the loamy ground beneath them again, he sniffed one more time, trying to separate the normal scents like the grass and the dirt and other Herla in the Glen with something that wasn't normal. Something that shouldn't have been there.
"Well," he began, sniffing, "We know someone took the stockings, of course...," another sniff, "and that something probably left these tracks." He sniffed one last time, taking a few steps forward, leaving his own prints in the shape of the ones they were trying to follow. "Unless our culprit was riding something," he added with a light laugh.
