"How interesting. And do you always try to equate yourself to organic beings? That is the second time you have used the analogy of food to describe your methods for sustenance."

"A mixed family with 5 organic siblings makes it second nature," she explained.

Sinthos didn't bother to hide is surprised reaction. "I would certainly say so. Never a moment to yourself in a bunch like that I'd guess."

"My sisters are not bad...though some are occasionally trying,' she said. "But yes, I do live to protect them."

Sinthos took a deep breath, reaching back and remembering, "My mate...We had just started our own home...out in the woods, away from everyone else as is customary for those who have just been joined as mates. Our cave was warm and cozy, full of love and laughter. One autumn day there was a large storm. We were almost out of fire wood, and it was looking like it was going to be a chilly night. So like the loving mate I was, I decided that I would go out and gather more wood, just enough for the night. I kissed her and told her I'd be back soon...." He stopped and took another breath, emotions closer to the surface than he wanted. "When I left, the wind was blowing and I had an eerie feeling, like I shouldn't leave. But we needed the wood. I wasn't paying attention. I was too busy thinking about spending a warm night with her by the fire. Had I been less occupied, I would have noticed the signs. No bugs chirping, no birds cawing. I was gone for about forty-five minutes. When I got back..." Another pause, "There was nothing I could do. She was gone. There was so much blood...and no way to bring her back."
