Assuming he wanted his ball back, Pascal made a face and tossed it back to Shoyo, regardless of where the boy's attention was at the moment.
"Ohh, okay... So like this?" She asked hesitantly, unclasping her hands and spreading them apart by the appropriate length, still outstretched in front of her as they had been before.

"Urk." He scrambled to collect the ball in his hands as it bounced off of him, grinning his silent thanks to the pokemon before moving to place himself in front of Nicolette. "Yeah! A little more relaxed, though." He set the ball on the ground momentarily, taking up the posture for himself: knees bent, waist lowered, arms apart with his palms facing up as if he were prepared to catch something large and hefty. "It's like this, and then fwoop," he brought his hands together, arms outstretched and elbows locked, "then pow!" His posture bounced. "Ah, the pow is mostly from your legs though! You only have to move your arms a little bit, to direct where the ball goes. The force for the pow comes from your knees!" He leaned and picked up the ball again, spinning it briefly against his palm, "Lemme know when you're ready!"

She nodded and did her best to copy his stance as he corrected her, then practiced clasping and unclasping her hands as instructed. Fwoop, and then pow... "Ohh, it is?" From her knees, not her arms... She never would've gotten that if he hadn't told her, and so she bent her knees, bouncing in place a little. "I'll remember that, thank you!" She said brightly, then clasped her hands together again as her expression changed to one of determination and concentration, "Okay. I think I'm ready!"

"Okay! It'll come straight to you, so all you have to worry about is hitting it back to me. Here it comes!" He gave the volleyball a gentle underhand toss that arced upwards a bit and fell directly towards Nicolette.

"Okay," she replied a little hesitantly, suddenly a tad nervous as the ball headed towards her. It did indeed fall directly towards her, and as it grew nearer, she tensed up and held her breath, but unfortunately she tried to move up from her knees too early and instead of properly receiving it, the ball bounced first off her arm and then lightly against the side of her face, eliciting from Nicolette a startled "eep!" of surprise, before it fell to the ground nearby.

"Don't worry, don't worry!" he said encouragingly, lifting his hands to call for the ball to be thrown back. "You can do it! Just relax!"

Luckily for her, the toss had been gentle, so it hadn't hurt anything but her pride. Her face flushed red with embarrassment as she bent down to retrieve the ball and toss it back to him. "Sorry," she said while looking more at the ground than at Shoyo, raising a hand to push her hair back behind her so it wouldn't be in the way. "I'll do better this time!" So saying, her determined expression returned and she resumed the stance he'd shown her, ready to try this once more.

"Do your best!" he said in praise of her resolve as he caught the returned ball. "Here it comes!" He repeated the first toss he had performed, restrained and direct.

She gave a firm nod at his words. This time she was better prepared, having already experienced it once, and was that much more determined not to accidentally hit herself again. She attempted to do as he'd told her, moving not quite as early as she had last time, and succeeded in bouncing the ball off her arms this time, though it didn't travel very far before it hit the ground again.

"Nice, nice!" he cheered, fetching the ball and falling back to his position. "Try it with a little bit more force next. Use your shoulders! I'll toss it a little bit higher so it comes down a little bit harder, so it'll bounce more easily!" He moved back into a throwing stance, "Ready? Here it comes!" The ball traveled higher as it left his hands, but it still properly fell directly towards Nicolette.

"Ah, okay!" She responded, hoping that the ball coming down harder wouldn't make it more difficult, but all the same she readied herself once more and, when the ball reached an appropriate height, she moved as instructed to receive and bounce the ball back up and away from herself with a bit more force this time than the last.

"Yeah, great!" He applauded enthusiastically, then retrieved the ball again. "That was great! Let's do another one like that, okay? Here we go!" As promised, he gave the ball another toss like the last.

His enthusiasm fueled hers, and she brightened considerably, a broad smile spreading across her face as she moved back to position. "Okay!"
After some time and quite a bit of passing and receiving, Nicolette bumped the ball back with more ease than she'd had originally, but this time she straightened up and rubbed at her arms with a mild frown. "My arms are getting a little sore," she admitted, unsure if she was more upset about the soreness or that the soreness would prevent her from continuing. She did want to continue, though... "Is there anything else we can do?" Oh! "Oh, did you need to practice more?" Maybe she could help him, like he'd been helping her?

He blinked, momentarily uncertain of the meaning of her statement before realizing that it probably meant she wanted to stop. He supposed that was probably natural, though, given that it was only the first time she'd ever interacted with a volleyball - and they had been going for a while now. "Hrrmmmmm..." He considered her words briefly; maybe she could try out setting the ball, and then he could try spiking off her set... But the setter's job was one of the most difficult on the court. It took a lot of awareness and precision, and she was a total beginner. "I always need more practice," he said, running a hand through his wild hair thoughtfully, "but there's not a whole lot that two people can do together... Do you wanna try overhead passing? It'll be a little harder, since you have to watch the ball in a wider area, but it's less forceful than receiving with your arms."

Always? Maybe it was like pokmon training, in that one should always work on training... Maybe she was signing herself up for a lot of work. But it was all fun, and so she dismissed the thought for now. Did she want to try? "Yes, I do," she replied eagerly, bouncing on her toes a little, then stopped with a mildly confused frown, "What's overhead passing?"
