GMFC Thread rp
Participants: Luna, Kaja, Remy

Cajmera
"See? I told you that it wouldn' take too long, Kaja!" Grinning from ear to ear, Remington bounded into the waiting room of the GMFC, for once not making a beeline to the toy area. This visit was special, after all. This time, instead of his mum bringing him, he got to have Kaja bring him! And that was truly special. "See?"

"What do you mean, see? You are such a silly kid, Remmers, if you didn't realize that there's no way Mom would have had me bring you if this place wasn't within a decent walking distance." Hands in the pockets, Kaja followed her little brother into the clinic. Though in typical teen fashion she tried to look bored, at the same time she was looking around the place with interest. She herself didn't see any of the doctors here, and this was her first time scoping the place out. Still, it had enough of a repuation...

Luna Edae

It was about that time Luna emerged from Dr. Haladet's office, arm elevated and her fingers pressed against a bandage and roll of gauze on the inside of her left elbow. She was wincing, muffled waves of discomfort being projected in all directions.

>_
She was so wrapped up in the feeling of "ow" that she didn't even notice Kaja... or Remy.

Cajmera

Glancing around the room as she was, it didn't Kaja long to notice Luna; rather, she noticed almost as soon as the older girl appeared. However, since she didn't know her, it didn't seem quite right to approach...that, and the fact that Kaja was almost rabidly antisocial. Instead, she went over to a chair and flopped down, pulling her knees up to her chest and settling in to watching Remy.

However, Remy has also noticed Luna; unlike his sister, though, he wasn't bound by shyness or lack of recognition. "LUNA!!!!" Grinning, the little boy all but catapulted himself at her, latching onto one leg and beaming up at her. "Hi hi, Luna! You don't look very happy, did you know that?"

Luna Edae
Luna smiled weakly, patting Remy on the top of his head as best as she could considering doctors' orders. And though she normally spoke in telepathic projections, now, she was speaking in empathic ones; conveying vague senses of what was going on, but no specific words.

Luna just had blood taken, and it still ached. Did Remy understand that? She had to keep it up to help it stop bleeding.

And she really didn't feel all that well up in the head right that moment, and with all that extra weight on her leg, she may end up falling over and not being able to get back up. @_@

Cajmera
Remy might not have exactly understood what Luna was trying to convey, but Kaja could definitly tell that Remy's attentions weren't completely welcome at the moment. Rising to her feet, she trotted over and gently unwrapped Remy's arms from Luna, patting him on the head as she finished. "I think that your friend might feel a bit better of you didn't leech onto her, Rems. See that?" Pointing at Luna's arm, Kaja drew his attention to the bandage. "Looks like she was bleeding."

Following the direction of Kaja's finger, Remy's eyes got huge as he finally realized that Luna had a bandage. Luna had a bandage? That meant that she had to have hurt herself! No wonder she looked sad, if she hurted! "I's sorry, Luna; I didn't know you'd gotten a hurt." Looking up at her anxiously, he reached up and patted her arm near the bandage, a worried look in his eyes. "The bandage makes it feel better though, right?" That's what he'd always been told, at least. "Luna's arm'll feel better?"

Luna Edae
Luna smiled gently, making her way over to one of the waiting room chairs and sinking into it gratefully. Finally, she was able to collect her thoughts enough to be able to project properly.

Dr. Haladet needed to take some blood out of my arm to make sure everything was fine, Luna explained, patting her knee to let Remy know he was welcome to sit on her lap if he wanted. And yes, the bandage DOES make it feel better. That wasn't entirely true, but she did remember a time when it WAS.

She couldn't help but weigh the options of explaining just WHY she had to have blood taken out of her; would Remy understand? Would she have to explain the birds and the bees? Would she be lynched by a parental unit for it? With Jokeph getting a checkup of his own, she didn't think she was ready to risk a LYNCHING...

Instead, for the moment, she turned her gaze to Kaja. Are you going to introduce us, Remy?

Cajmera
The worried look in Remy's eyes gave way to pleasure as once again he felt the strange sensation of Luna's head-talk; it never got old, being able to hear words straight inside his head!

And it was also nice to know that Luna felt better. Bandages were sure nice things to have around, obviously.

Taking advantage of her offering, Remy scrambled up onto her lap and hugged her. He didn't understand why she'd had blood taken, but it didn't seem a nice thing to do. And Dr. Haladat had done it? "H'come she did that, Luna? She told me that blood needed to stay INside the body." Even if she wanted to see if things were fine, there had to be a better way! 'Specially since taking blood seemed to be a good way to make you NOT fine. Even if Luna HAD gotten a bandage, taking blood seemed mean.

Still, it took Luna's query to remind him that Luna didn't know Kaja! And Kaja didn't know her, either...which meant that Remy got to introduce someone for once! "Luna, this's my sister, Kaja; Kaja, this is Luna. She can head-talk!"

Up until Remy's last little bit of introduction, Kaja had been completely in the dark. She hadn't heard anything, but seen Remy ask about something that seemed to be an unknown; but once he mentioned 'head-talk' it all clicked. So this was the telepath her mother had mentioned Remy meeting.

Running a hand nervously over one black horn, she nodded a greeting at Luna. "Nice to meet you, Luna; like the kiddo said, I'm Kaja, resident sister, sitter, and encyclopedia."

Luna Edae
Luna nodded at Kaja, smiling as warmly as she could manage. "Ihh maice oomee chyuu." It's nice to meet you. The smile faded to something more apologetic; Luna's one spoken statement was proof enough that she couldn't verbally express the thoughts she projected, no matter how hard she tried.

She turned back to Remy, furrowing her brow. That's why you have to be careful when you take blood out. She explained. You go in with the smallest needle possible, take oooooooonly as much as you need, and then bandage it up right away. She tapped the bandage, wincing slightly. Dr. Haladet needed to make sure I was all right inside. And that's why I had to have a blood test. Her smile grew weak.

And I have to get this done a lot more times until...

Okay, she'd risk it.

...Until my baby is born.

Cajmera
Nodding her head at Luna politely, Kaja nevertheless felt distinctly left out of the conversation; she couldn't hear a thing. Well, Luna seemed like the type she could trust with her brother, so giving the two a slight wave Kaja soon had returned to her chair from earlier and sat down to read a magazine.

His attention focused on Luna, Remy barely noticed when Kaja slipped away. Instead, his green eyes were fixed on Luna's face and his head cocked slightly to one side as he tried to make sense of what she was saying. How could you tell stuff from blood, after all? And why would you take it out if you weren't supposed to do anything to let it out? Wouldn't it be easier to look in someone's mouth to see if they were ok inside?

All those questions vanished at Luna's last comment, however. "Luna's gonna have a baby? Wow, when when when??" Eyes widening once again, Remy looked up at Luna in awe and wonder. A baby? Babies were cool alright, and so small! He'd seen the neighbor's cat's babies, and they had been little and cool; never seen a human baby, but they had to be cool as well!

However, the realization Luna was having a baby made him think of something else. "Luna, if they're pokin' you with needles, won't they poke the baby, too?" That wasn't nice!

Luna Edae
I don't know, Luna answered truthfully. Not for a while, though. See? You can't even see the baby in my tummy yet.

At the mention of the needles poking the baby, Luna couldn't help but laugh. The baby isn't in my ARM, silly!

She WOULD have to have an amnio, but tastefully left that part out of the conversation. After all, no point worrying or confusing Remy any further.

Cajmera
...Well, doctors used really long needles. Just beacuse Luna didn't think that mightn't not reach far enough to poke the baby didn't mean they COULDN'T.

Still, Luna probably wouldn't let them poke her baby. She was too nice to poke anybody, so 'specially not her own baby!

Tilting his head again, he looked down at Luna's stomach, gently touching it. No lump. Was she sure there was a baby in there? "Are you sure you have a baby, Luna?" Maybe she was mistaken...maybe they were trying to take her blood for something else! eek

Luna Edae
Luna nodded resolutely. There's a baby in there, all right. I probably will start showing soon when it grows big enough, but right now, I just have a hard time fitting into some of my old clothes.

Cajmera
Frowning at Luna, Remy scrathced his head. "But if you can't see that the baby is there, how do you KNOW it's there?"

Luna Edae
Well, Luna would have to learn to field these questions sometime. Why not practice now? ...Without warping the poor child forever? THAT would be the ultimate test.

Well... Delicately, delicately. See, when a woman's body prepares to have a baby, she can tell. And there are medical tests -- not the blood taking one -- that can find out if there's a baby in there.

So far, so good.

Like, one of the machines is called an ultrasound. It uses sound waves that we can't hear, and they bounce the waves off the baby. And machines can pick that up and make a picture of the baby! It doesn't hurt the baby or the mother, either.

Cajmera
Leaning his head against Luna's shoulder, Remy listened patiently to her explanation. He supposed that those things made sense. Doctors helped babies be born, so they ought to know when they needed to start getting ready to be born...but they didn't explain how they knew to USE those machines.

"But how do they know to take pictures of the baby if you can't see it's there?" He could be very tenacious when he wanted to know something, after all. As far as he knew, his mama and aunts didn't go have pictures taken like that, so it must not be something you did unless you were gonna have a baby, but if you needed the pictures to know you were having a baby... @.@

Luna Edae
They don't do that until they know there's a baby in there. And there are other tests to do for that. And that would be a potential gross-out that perhaps young boys would find amusing, but she didn't think the mother would find her young son learning these things at this age to be such.

It's a mommy thing.

Cajmera
....he hated that answer. It was one his mother used often enough, chalked right up with things like 'you'll understand when you're older'. Being little was really not fair sometimes!

But he'd figured out over time that when you got a vague unexplanitory answer like that that asking more wouldn't work. So he'd have to wait...and maybe hope that Kaja would tell him sometime. Maybe. "So, you learned you had a baby inside and then they took pictures? What does it look like?" Safe question. Hopefully?

Luna Edae
Luna smiled apologetically. She could understand Remy didn't like the answer, but maybe she had a chance to redeem herself.

The smile grew mischievous.

Like an alien.

Cajmera
An alien. AN ALIEN? Instantly, Remy's eyes got huge and he was blinking owlishly at Luna. "An alien? Like the kind with a big head and green skin and big buggy eyes and-" Suddenly he broke off, narrowing his eyes at her suspiciously. People didn't have baby aliens! She was teasing him again!

"Really, Luna! I want to know what it really looks like!"

Luna Edae
I'm serious! Luna burst out laughing. I don't know if it's green, but it looks like an alien right now! With a tail.

Thank you, biology courses!

It really does, you know. You know how tadpoles don't look anything like frogs until they grow up into them? It's the same thing.

Cajmera
...Still looking at Luna suspiciously, Remy looked down at her stomach again as though expecting a magic viewing window to open up. When none did, he turned has gaze back to Luna's face, not totally convinced. Still...

"My sister has a tail." Pointing over at where Kaja was involved in her magazine, he indicated the furry tail that was flicking boredly against the chair. "I don' think she's an alien, though. Mama said she's somethin' different, but I don' know what."

He wasn't sure he believed Luna yet, but he could give her the benefit of the doubt.

Luna Edae
I don't explain it too well, Luna admitted. It's one of those things that is easier to understand... And he'd probably hate this part... ...When you get older.

Wince!

Cajmera
Why did adults always say that? Huffing a bit, Remy crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back against Luna. "Everyone always says that, but I AM gettin older, Luna? When will I be older enough, hmm?" He was older than he'd been yesterday, but no one ever said EXACTLY when he'd be old enough to know anything, and that just wasn't fair ><

Luna Edae
Luna sighed. She'd definitely have to learn how to dodge questions more artfully when her baby was born.

You see, Remy... there are a lot of things that we can't understand when we're small. We know the sky is blue, and if we ask, we know it's because light is bouncing off the atmosphere in a certain way. But the how and why of it is something that will be more confusing.

She paused to collect her thoughts.

And that's why we go to school. We learn small things first, not because grown-ups don't think we can understand bigger things, but because we need to learn the small things first. And when we go into higher grades, we get to learn the more important and complicated things that are easier to understand because we learned the smaller things.

She didn't know if this was getting through, but she couldn't really stop now. So she took another breath to steel herself before continuing.

Like babies! I knew babies came from mommies when I was your age. When I was in the fourth grade, I learned why mommies have babies. When I was in the sixth grade, I learned how everything works to make a baby. And when I was in the tenth grade, I learned how a baby grows and develops in the womb, and what happens when.

And now, the finale! And that's why grown-ups say you'll learn things when you're older. Because before you can get the BIG answers, you're going to have to get through all the little ones, first. She poked him on the nose. Get it?

Cajmera
Even though he'd been listening very hard throughout Luna's explanation, the only thing that Remy truly understood was the fact that he wasn't going to be 'old enough' for a long time. He was bearly in kindergarten, after all, and school lasted a really really long time, like forever almost!

But at least Luna had tried. It wasn't as bad as telling him again that he'd know when older was because he'd actually BE older; how was that supposed to make sense to anyone at all?? "Bein' litle is no fun. Or fair. You got it better, Luna."

Luna Edae
It seems that way, doesn't it? Another poke. When you're as old as I am, you're going to want to be little again. That way you can run and play and not worry about what other people think, and you can ask a bunch of questions and people won't think less of you for it. Luna winked slyly at Remy. If I were to ask those questions, everyone would ask me "Shouldn't you know that already? Didn't you learn it in school?"

When you're big like me, you have to have all the answers, even the ones you don't know. It's not very fair, either.

Cajmera
From the way Luna was talking, it sounded like being big wasn't really that much fun either...but he knew better. This was the same sort of thing that his mother had told him, but Remy could see right through it. Adults SAID that it was better to be little, but if it was really so good to be little then they wouldn't do half of the things they did that made being little so evil. Apparently it was some sort of defense mechanism against little kids trying to make things better...

Still, it wasn't Luna's fault. She probably had to listen to the rules that even older adults told her, cause she didn't seem very big anyway. Like a really old kid, but still an adult. Or something.

That made him wonder, though... "Luna, are you a real grownup?"

Luna Edae
Luna had to think about that. She was eighteen. A legal adult. But she didn't FEEL very old, either. She was going to be someone's mother, but here she was, still living at home because she didn't feel comfortable in her own place yet. Not wanting to leave her parents yet. She was supposed to be one of the Neilani elite, but here she was still clinging to the folds of her mother's skirt, so to speak.

...I don't know.

Cajmera
Well, that didn't help anything! If Luna didn't know, that had to mean that she realy wasn't, right? Cause you knew when you were an adult, or so he thought. Then again, maybe she wasn't? Or maybe she just didn't understand what he was saying.

"Cause you don't act really old like the doctors or mama, and you played with me before. But you talk like an adult, and I think that only adults can have babies. So...I wanna know, Luna!"

Luna Edae
Well... THINK, Luna, think!

Physically, I'm a grown-up. My body's done growing. It's finished. Sure, I'll be growing when the baby grows, but it'll go back to normal when the baby's born.

But mentally...? I still FEEL like a kid. And I like talking to kids. And I like being with kids. You're easier to understand, and you don't make things more complicated than they have to be.

Eighteen is the age when people here are considered to be full adults. But going from seventeen to eighteen doesn't automatically mean we'll feel any different. Do you feel any different on your birthday than the day before?

Cajmera
...18 was really old. Like, REALLY old. No wonder Luna was so tall!

Still, what she was saying kinda made sense. He'd just turned 6 and a half recently, and he still felt like he was only 6, and when he had been 5 it seemed the same way. Age made no sense sometimes. "So...you're an adult, then? But you THINK like you're a kid?"

Luna Edae
Luna nodded. Pretty much!

Cajmera
...Adults officially made no sense. That was all there was too it. Sighing Remy flopped against Luna, trying to figure out why it was that they got to decide everything when they couldn't even figure themselves out!

Luna Edae
Luna smiled and shook her head. The world was just funny that way, wasn't it?

Cajmera
Sighing again, Remy nodded his head at Luna. "People are silly, you know that Luna? And nobody makes any sense." Was it too much to ask for people to make sense? To explain everything and not always tell you you were too young! "When I'm a grown-up I'm going to tell little kids anything they ask. Cause it's no fair to have to wait."

Luna Edae
I'd like to see that. There was no sarcasm or teasing in Luna's "voice" at this. Deep down, a part of her wondered how exactly things would work when Remington was theoretically old enough to tell children what adults normally told children.

And another part of her wondered if he'd understand how difficult it could be to explain complicated situations to children.

You'll let me know how it goes, right?

Cajmera
"A'course I'll tell you, Luna. Cause then you'll know that not ALL adults listen to what other adults say to tell kids." Grinning in contentment at his own future plottage, Remy snuggled against Luna, yawning a little bit. He was supposed to be here to get a shot, Kaja had said; cause it was flu season. He wasn't sure what flu was, or really what getting shots did to prevent it, but that was why Kaja was with, he supposed. But boy, waiting seemed to take such a long time all the time...at least Luna was here today, though.

Luna Edae
Luna wouldn't be here for much longer, though. Jokeph emerged from the back of the clinic, raking one hand through his hair as he heaved a sigh of relief.

He was finished with his examination, which meant that Luna was just about ready to head home.

Cajmera
Remy was just about to drop off to sleep when a nurse poked her head out through of the doors, glancing down at the clipboard in her hand and then out at the waiting room. "Remington Boetiathe?"

Hearing Remy's name called, Kaja replaced her magazine and got up. "Coming right now, Ma'am." Walking over to Luna, Kaja gently scooped up her brother, smiling at how he clung to her as soon as she started to pick him up. "I guess we missed naptime; at any rate, I think I can take him off your hands for a while."

Yawing again, Remy rested his cheek against his sister's shoulder, but gave Luna a wave as his sister toted him out to get his shots. "Bye bye, Luna; remember, when I get bigger!"

Luna Edae
Luna waved tiredly back at Remy, smiling gently. I'll be waiting!

"REMINGTON!!!!"

His sister's voice floated up the staircase and through the open door of Remington's room, causing him to nearly jump out of his skin; that had been neither expected nor appreciated, given the fact that he was very much involved in his current project: writing in the hardbound journal that his mother had given him as a congratulation for starting second grade. Not that he'd been unable to write before that; his sister had taught him to write even before kindergarten. But this journal was special, so he took writing in it very seriously.

Which was exactly why he was now glaring rather balefully at the streak of ink that ran across the page. He'd been writing when Kaja's yell had surprised him, and he'd jerked the pen out of reflex, resulting in a long black smear. Darn it!

Running one hand through his unruly red hair, Remy hopped up off the bed and stormed over to the door. "WHAT IS IT, KAJA? I'M BUSY!!" And she really ought to know better than to bother him when he was busy! He left her alone when she was doing homework, after all.

However, Kaja didn't take the hint. Downstairs, the risen demon girl stood at the foot of the stairs, tapping one foot impatiently. When instead of the answer she was expecting she got snarkiness, Kaja's ire was officially raised. "DAMN IT, REMY, GET DOWN HERE!! YOU HAVE TO SET THE TABLE!" She'd heard it from their mother, after all; she was supposed to put dinner in the oven, and Remy was supposed to set the table at six. Which it was now, damnit!

"YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SWEAR, KAJA! I'M TELLING!" Hanging around the doorframe, Remy stuck his tongue out at his sister, though the fact that the stairs bent meant that she couldn't exactly see. He was annoyed at being interrupted, annoyed at being reminded of something he hated doing anyway, and annoyed that she was interrupting him. He just wanted to finish writing, and besides; Mom hadn't told him he had to do anything.

That did it. Scowling blackly, Kaja clenched her fists and stalked up the stairs. He wanted to be annoying, then she'd have to show him what that meant for him!

Private rp; Remy, Kaja, and Rai

CrispyWonderMint
Humming quite contetedly to herself, Rai gently cradled her infamous basket in the crook of her arm and smiled a cheshire grin at the sight of Cajmera's home. It had been quite a long time since she'd seen her sister, nevermind her niece and nephew.

Actually, this was the first time she'd actually gotten a chance to see her nephew, and the thought was daunting enough to make her down right fidgety. Hence, the humming.

She arrived at the front doorstep all too soon, but, seeing as it would be quite rude to turn back (nevermind that Kaja had probably already seen her), she rang the bell with a cheerful smile and waited.

Cajmera
"REMY!!!" The shout reverberated up the staircase, through the open door of Remington's room as he lay upsidedown on the bed, doodling in his journal. His sister's shout interrupted whatever train of thought had previously been in progress, causing the kid to throw down the pen he'd been writing with and hop to his feet, stalking over to the door, out into the hall, and over to the top of the stairs.

"WHAT IS IT, KAJA?" Yelling was a frequent method of communication between the two, particularly when one was upstairs and the other was downstairs. But as was often the case these days, Remy's voice was tinged with annoyance. Why couldn't she yell when he WASN'T busy?

However, Kaja was good at ignoring that annoyed tone. And why wouldn't she be, when Remy had been acting aggreived ever since he first got that journal of his. So she merely yelled back up the stairs, "Remy, you're supposed to-"

The ringing of the doorbell cut Kaja off all at once. Frowning, she stared in the direction of the front door for a moment. Who was showing up at this hour of the day, and why were they at the front door? And why were they-

Suddenly, Kaja's eyes lit up as she suddenly remembered something her mum had mentioned in passing. Was it really...could it be...

Forgetting completely about her brother, Kaja turned and raced through the house over to the front door. Pausing briefly, she peeped throw the window beside the door, then grinned wide as she flung it open. "AUNT RAI!"

CrispyWonderMint
Laughing, Rai shook her head at her niece. "Surprised, Kaja? I couldn't seem to find the side entrance from last time, so I figured I'd do things the proper way this time around." She gave her niece a quick squeeze while telling herself not to worry.

"How's your turtle? And your mother, at that?"

Cajmera
Grinning from ear to ear, Kaja latched onto her aunt's hand, the better to drag her into the house. "Geez, Aunt Rai, how hard is it to find the door? You're lucky that I was downstairs, otherwise I wouldn't have heard."

Stepping into the living room, she gave her aunt a wink. "And Simon is doing great. Oli and Herman took up with her right away, and the three of them are good friends now. And Mum is at work, but she should be home in an hour or two. Want something to drink?"

The comment about her mother had reminded Kaja that SHE was the hostess right now, and she meant to live up to that noble role.

CrispyWonderMint
"Tea sounds good," Rai said as she was half-dragged into the house; managing to shut the door at the last second, she followed her niece as she continued on about the turtles.

"I'm glad they like him as much as you do," she said with relief. "Though I'll have to remember about the door. Do you happen to know when she'll be home?" There was a mischevious glint in her eyes accompanying the question, and a quirk of a smile to boot. If Caj wasn't home, she might be able to pull off her surprise.

Cajmera
"Tea it is, then. Though it'll have to be raspberry tea, since that's the only kind Mum drinks." Releasing her aunt's hand, Kaja proceded rapidly into the kitchen where she immeadiately set to work scrounging up the necessary items for the making of tea. "Do you like lemon or raspberry juice with your tea, Aunt Rai?"

She'd hopped up onto a low stool in order to reach the upper cupboard where the tea was kept, and had her back to her aunt as Rai asked about her mother's schedule. Consequently, her voice was a wee bit muffled as she answered. "Mum ought to be home in about two hours, unless you want me to call her cell and let her know you're here? I'm sure that she could get here earlier, otherwise."

CrispyWonderMint
"Raspberry's good," Rai agreed as she sat at the table. "I brought muffins again, as usual, so we'll be able to pass the time until she gets back. Besides, it's always fun to surprise her." 'Now that I don't have to worry about her health anymore, anyway.'

Speaking of Simon... "Kaja, is it just me, or is that a turtle on the couch?" Raising a brow at her niece, Rai nodded at the living room, meanwhile wondering what would happen in the following two hours; she'd grown a little more sane, after all, and didn't want it all to go to waste.

Then again, if that happened, she wouldn't complain, either.

Cajmera
Without even turning around to see what her aunt was talking about, Kaja grinned and nodded her head. "That would be Oli, Aunt Rai; he's napping right now, so I just left him on the couch. Please don't sit on him, 'K?"

It didn't take too much longer for the girl to find all the necessities for tea making, and she soon had the kettle sitting on the stove. Pleased with her efforts, she eyed the pot for a brief moment before turning back to her aunt. "I can take the muffins if you want, Aunt Rai? Or else you can just put them on the table, since that's all that I was going to do with them anyway. And sit, sit!"

However, the frown returned to Kaja's face as she realized that all the kitchen chairs were occupied. A coat, a backpack, a skateboard...he STILL hadn't moced anything! That brother of hers was so messy sometimes!

Shrugging her shoulders at her aunt in an 'oh well, what can you do?' gesture, she promptly stalked over to the foot of the stairs. "REMINGTON, IF YOU DON'T-"

And just as she was yelling, the brother in question stomped down into the kitchen. "Geez, Kaja, look before you yell! I'm getting to it!" So saying, he gave his sister an exasperated look, then paused as he noticed Rai in the kitchen for the first time. "We have company?"

CrispyWonderMint
'Oh boy. Fun time.' Rai smiled at Remmington, almost as though looking at him for the first time...then mentally laughing at herself as she realized that she was doing just that.

He was beautiful, from the red hair that fell in the way of his green eyes down to the scar on his cheek; if Rai remembered correctly, Caj had mentioned something about him running into a bookcase when he had been just a baby. Either way, it was deffinately easy to see that he had inherited some of his mother's looks.

"Well, I don't know if I technically qualify as official company, but I suppose I'm something like that," she admitted. The corner of her mother twitched in amusement; after all, it wasn't every day that she got someone to stop and stare without doing anything unusual.

"Guess I get to surprise more than one person this time, eh, Kaja?" she asked with a sideways glance to her niece.

"Hello, Remmington." She turned her attention back to the young boy. "My name's Rai."

Cajmera
Crossing his arms over his chest, Remy sized up his aunt even as she was doing the same to him. Constant visits to the GMFC had meant he'd come in contact with more strangers than he might have otherwise wished, and consequently he wasn't shy about making acquaintences. Although...

"Rai? As is Aunt Rai?" The look that he gave her was curious, and carried over to his sister as Rai commented to her. "And what about surprises?"

Kaja had leaned up against the doorframe by the stairs, chuckling as her aunt and brother had exchanged look. "Bingo, Remy, and so it would seem, Aunt Rai!" This was very interesting, alright; how could she have forgotten that Aunt Rai had never actually met her brother in person?

CrispyWonderMint
"The one and only," Rai said with a happy nod. Seeing as how Remy was the only young boy in the house, it had been a pretty good guess on her part.

"And as for surprises, well..." The mischevious look returned as she dragged out the suspence a little; she could already hear her sister calling her a "whelp".

Cajmera
Remy didn't know his aunt as well as Kaja did; consequently he didn't greet the surprise comment with the suspicious look that Kaja was now focusing on Rai. He merely looked at her curiously, wondering what the occassion was that lead to a family visit. But until he'd dealt with the niceities, no questioning!

So he gave Rai a smile, running one hand through his tousled red hair in exactly the same fashion as his mother. "Well, it's nice to finally meet you in person, Aunt Rai. I'm Remy."

"Aunt Rai, what are you up to?" This came from Kaja, who was scrutinizing Rai with the look of one that knew exactly what she was up to. "You look too excited to not be up to something..."

CrispyWonderMint
"It's nice to finally meet you, too, Remy. I've heard a lot about you...from both your mother and sister." The quirky smile grew, then vanished as Kaja started to interrogate her. Honestly, why did she always have to be up to something? Could she just be...well, what was the point when her niece was right?

"Kaja, I swear you're turning into your mother," Rai declared with an innocent expression. "Why would I be up to anything?"

Cajmera
...Right. Kaja merely raised a brow at her aunt, then grinned and set the basket of forgotten muffins on the table. "Aunt Rai, the only times you EVER dance around the point like this is when you're up to something. Mum might know you, but I'd say that I do too by now!"

By now Remy was looking at Rai curiously as well. Kaja obviously knew her better than he did, so if she thought something was up...

Well, he'd let her do the interogation. Hooking a stool from the table, Remy reached out and snagged a muffin from the table, the better to munch as he listened...

CrispyWonderMint
"Oh really?" Raising a brow of her own Rai crossed her arms and studied her niece intently. "And why, praytell, would you claim I'm 'dancing around the subject' when I'm obviously dodging it all together?" She brushed a spec of dust from her shirt, waiting. Honestly, the girl was learning far too quickly how to spoil her fun - something she'd also picked up from her mother, no doubt.

Cajmera
"Because I like to give you the benefit of the doubt, of course!" Kaja's grin was bright, and her expression was extremely smug now that she knew for a fact she'd been right. "But now that you've as much as admitted you're up to something, why don't you tell us, or show us, if that's the case?"

CrispyWonderMint
"Alas, I am caught by my own dratted phrases and prose." Sighing dramitically, Rai finally gave in to her niece's wiles with a wide grin, though there was a bit of worry in her eyes. 'This is why I wondered if their mother was home...oh well.'

Aloud she said,"I was thinking of waiting for your mother to come home, but since I know he's perfectly gentle-natured and already trained, I suppose I can let him out." She nodded at the basket from which Remy had taken the muffin.

"Remy, if you'd be so kind as to bring that basket, I can show you what all this fuss is about."

Cajmera
Rai's last comment got the attention of BOTH kids. Kaja's grin widened, and she fairly sparkled with excitement. Already trained? Had she brought another pet? That was so very cool!

But Remy's excitement was tempered by wariness, evidenced when he stared at the muffin in his hand with surprise. What was in with the muffins???

So it wasn't to be wondered at when he immeadiately set the muffin on the counter without taking another bite. But muffins aside...he was intrigued as well. Kaja's excitement was definitely contagious!

Taking ahold of the basket, he immeadiately passed it to Rai. "Ok, Auntie; let's see what the excitement is!"

CrispyWonderMint
"You can eat the muffin, Remy. It's not contaminated, I assure you. I'd eat my own foot before something went wrong with my cooking." Rummaging about in the basket as she spoke, Rai's hand closed around a ball of cloth; it appeared to be a sphere of some variety.

"Actually, when I think about it, this might be a good time to move outside..."

Dear Journal;

Sisters are really stupid sometimes. Especially mine.

Remy was tired. Not the form of tired where you wanted to go to sleep; no, that would have been too easy to deal with, considering he was up in his room. Heck, he was SITTING on his bed, which by association meant that if he wanted to take a nap, it'd be easy. Except that wasn't the sort of tired he was.

No, he was bored tired. The sort of tired that tends to kick in a few weeks into summer vacation, when the excitement of not having to go to school has been replaced with a constant feeling of 'well now what?' And wondering what to do next was a puzzler.

Kaja was basically no help. His older sister was almost never around these days, too preoccupied with exploring the local swamps with her turtles. Remy supposed that he could accompany her if he REALLY wanted, but Kaja was kinda weird when she was out there. And she talked to the turtles all the time, which was even weirder. Especially since it wasn't in the good way he talked to their pet felis; no, Kaja seemed to think that the turtles would talk back.

And even if he WASN'T a bit put off by the whole turtle-talking thing, Remy hated the swamps. They were slimy and gross and stank, and while he loved getting dirty as much as the next kid, he's stick with good, honest dirt and keep out of the grime.

Sighing, he rolled over onto his back, staring very moodily up at the ceiling. It was an interesting enough ceiling, since his mother had painted a neat map up there for him to stare at and imagine about; normally, he loved to look up and ponder what things the inhabitants of said ceiling world were up to. But he'd already done that today, and the allure of the ceiling world was gone.

"So bored..." Sighing, he blew aside the red forelock that crossed one eye, then smiled wryly as he decided that that action was the most interesting thing he'd done all day.

He douldn't ask his mother for input as to what he should do; declaring that you were bored or didn't know what to do meant that you were BEGGING to do chores, and he didn't feel like dusting today. Or ever, in fact, as dusting was a pointless exercise, since the dust always came back. He'd have to come up with something to do on his own, and that was the trouble.

Sitting up, he ran his hand through his hair in abject exasperation, frowning slightly as his fingers encountered a small lump. He STILL had that lump? Man, it had been what, two weeks since he'd first noticed that lump? If anything, it was getting bigger!

Well, that was life for you. He must have hit his head or something, though how he'd not noticed doing that was a mystery. Even if he hadn't hurt, he'd still have felt the touch, or heard the sound, or SOMETHING. He must have hit it on the headboard of his bed in his sleep, or something like that. Lumps didn't just crop up on their own, right?

Shrugging, he pulled his hand away from his head and flopped over again, staring out the window this time. Maybe he'd go to the park...

Dear Journal:
I have to say, things are a lot more chaotic with two school-aged children; back when Remy was a toddler and I had to keep an eye on his all the time, I often found myself wistfully thinking about the day that he'd be able to go off to school and I'd be able to get a bit of peace again.

Right. That was a great thought, but I guess I didn't think about the new responsibilities that come with him being in school, things like homework and school mornings and getting two kids to two diffferent schools...

And then, of course, there are the natural changes that kids go through themselves. I have to admit that I'm relieved that Remy is no longer as hell-bent on hurting himself as he was when he was younger, but it's almost like he went the other way in some things. He and Kaja are always at each other's throats now, it seems, and I can't help but be a bit worried. After all, he IDOLIZED her when he was younger, and now?

I can't help but wonder what happened; I think that I'm going to go in to the clinic and see wha their opinions are.

One of the problems with playgrounds was the fact that they were utterly random. Not random in the sense that you didn't know what you'd find; no, as a rule playgrounds were pretty constant. The one Remy liked to play at had the basic playground components; swings, jungle gym, slides, monkey bars, and all those other relevent elements of childhood pleasure (and pain, metaphorically speaking).

The randomness came into play when one was talking about WHO they met. All too often it seemed like there was no one else there, or only really little kids with their parents, or those older teens who liked to lean up against the jungle gym and not really do anything but stand. Actually finding someone FUN was the hard part.

Still, Remy had never needed to have company to have fun. He'd always liked the monkey bars, and they weren't really something you could use with lots of other people anyway; more people just meant that you had to wait a long time for a turn to use them, and waiting for your turn was really boring.

Today was shaping up to be one of those days when Remy got to contemplate isolation. Knees draped over the bar of the monkey bars, Remy dangled upside down with his hands behind his head. Hanging upside down was always neat, because it gave you a weird tingly feeling in your head that apparently came from having all the blood run there from the rest of your body; he supposed that was also why people's faces tended to turn red when they were upside-down for a long time.

He was probably pretty red himself right now, which meant that his hair probably looked oranger than ever. Crossing his eys, Remy stared at one particularly close bit of hair that hung over his face, uncrossing his arms to physically hold the hair close enough to look at. HE thought it was reddish, but Kaja liked to call him a pumpkin head on account of his hair was 'orangish.' Of course, Kaja's hair was RED, really dark red, even redder than blood, so she had some sort of weird complex about HIS hair.

He couldn't see how it mattered, really, nor did he care. Well, that was what he told his sister, at least, but ever since she's first called him pumpkin head he'd been extra paranoid, always trying to look at his hair and see what was 'orange' about it.

Today seemed like any other day though, all things considered; his hair was the same color it always was. Kaja was just silly, really.

Nodding (upsidedown) in agreement with him, Remy went back to crossing his arms, but not before gingerly feeling that one spot on his head again. Still a lump, but at least it wasn't soft; he KNEW it wasn't soft because he'd poked it, and it was a solid lump. That was a good thing, right? Having soft spots on your head meant your skull had to have gotten mushy or something, and then it would be easy for your brains to spill out if you got hit on the head. Or something like that.

Still, it probably wouldn't hurt to talk to his mother about the lump, and maybe have her look at it. A few weeks was a really long time to have one bump, after all, and it might be something extra bad. He didn't want to have to go to the clinic any more times than were absolutely necessary, thanks much!

Junyi
((HOKAY. LET'S SEE IF I CAN DO THIS. *cracks knuckles*))

"She'll need to come back next month for a follow-up," Dr. Haladet's syrupy-sweet voice rang out from the open door of her office. "Her progress is slow, but that's to be expected, really. She'll be fine as long as she interacts with people able to verbally communicate." A quick pause. "But if her signing is any indication, her grasp on language is quite strong for someone her age. She just needs to learn to verbalize better."

A long silence.

"Yes, yes, it'll be fine! Go. Scoot. I've got other patients to see~"

And with that, an awkward trio was unceremoniously dumped outside of the office. Jokeph, his head tilted in confusion as the door barely missed slamming on his wings. Luna, a blank stare on her face. And Caroline, squealing and giggling the second the door slammed shut.

Cajmera
Out in the waiting room, Remington sat perched on a chair, ostensibly reading one of the children's books. However, even while he was trying to focus on the story, Remy's face wore a somewhat goofy grin, the reason sitting comfortably on top of his head.

They were really small right now, bearly more than an inch tall if that, but they were special. They were HIS. His very own horns, just like his mother's.

That was why he was in at the doctor today, so that the doctor could check out both the horns and the scalp imeadiately surrounding them. One had to be healthy in their growth spurts, after all!

Regardless, he was excited. Ever since his mother had told him what those strange lumps actually were, he'd been in a state of constant excitement about them; today was no different.

Especially when he had someone to talk to about them!

Hearing the door slam, he looked up, the hand still on the horn. Seeing Luna brought a wide grin to his freckled face, and he was up and out of his chair in an instant. "Luna, hi!!!"

Junyi
Luna's gaze immediately snapped toward the new voice, her face expressionless for the moment it took for her to not only recognize Remington, but also to remember the appropriate reaction for when one reunites with a familiar friendly face.

It was difficult for her; learning how to feel on her own. If she'd begun young, then she'd probably have an easier grasp of it. But as things stood, nobody knew anything was wrong until it was far too late for recovery to be anything remotely resembling speedy.

But she was making progress. And she answered Remy's grin with a small, shaky smile of her own.

"Ah!" Caroline declared, holding out a hand toward Remington in greeting.

Cajmera
Had he been older, or more observant, or maybe just more knowledgeable about interaction between people, Remy might have been put off by the lack of a suitably 'exhuberant' response. As it was, he was simply so pleased to see Luna and share his good news that she could plausibly have gotten away with scowling at him and he wouldn't have noticed, answering her shaky smile with an energetic wave.

"It's great to see you, Luna, and hi there! Is this your baby girl?" His attention drawn by the child, Remy grinned and held out his hand at the little one, touching his hand to hers. "She's bigger'n she seems like she should be, but I guess that's cause it's been a while, huh?"

After all, Luna was only preganant last time! "She's cute!"

Junyi
Luna, who had been previously holding Caroline with one arm and supporting her with her hip, gently lowered the toddler to the ground. Caroline, in response, took a tentative step away from Remy, watching him through large, wide, nearly solid brown eyes.

"Kew?" she echoed, unceremoniously shoving her index finger into her mouth.

Caroline, Luna projected simply, her face softening as her initially forced smile grew a bit more genuine. She's not the only one bigger. She held up her hand, palm down, at the level of the top of Remington's head in order to illustrate her point.

Cajmera
Though his own exciting news was first and foremost in his mind, Remy wasn't quite so obsessed that he couldn't appreciate the novelty presented by the child. He'd never seen a kid that age before, not since he'd been a tot himself, and he was hardly likely to remember that sort of thing with any sort of clarity.

Watching as Caroline wobbled, Remy laughed as she poked her finger in her mouth, then grinned at Luna. "Caroline's a pretty name. It sounds like something LACEY. And I really am bigger, aren't I? But my height's not ALL that's grown."

Beaming proudly, he stood by the hand. However, after another moment something else occured to him, then he took Luna's hand and moved to actually SET it on his head. "Can you feel them?"

Junyi
Luna blinked. Well. She felt hair. And sure, hair grows, but it didn't look too horribly different than she remembered. And then, she was vaguely aware of something poking the palm of her hand.

Curiosity. Now that was an emotion she hadn't felt in a long while. The sudden rush of an emotion that was actually her own caught her completely off guard, and before she even realized what she was doing, she was on her tiptoes in order to better lean over Remington, her hands quickly parting his hair with the same enthusiasm of a child opening a present. And once one growing horn was in her sights, she hesitantly pressed it with one finger, as if it would either sting her or cause Remington pain.

Cajmera
Luna's enthusiasm was more than Remy had expected, but by no means unwelcome. After all, he himself was excited, and that meant that he wanted others to be excited as well. In this case, he'd gotten just that.

"They're HORNS, Luna. Aren't they neat? They're kinda small now, but now that they're actually OUT where I can see them, they don't really hurt. I didn't know what they were for a long time, not until Mom told me; I just thought I'd hit my head, isn't that funny?" He certainly thought so; hearing that he hadn't fallen on his head in his sleep was rather pleasant. Besides, horns were cool!

"Don't they look awesome? They're just like Mom's, only smaller, but if they keep growing they might get HUGE!" And wouldn't THAT be cool!

Junyi
"Huh!" Luna said aloud, giving the horn a last poke before taking a step back and smoothing her blouse, as if that would cancel out her childish outburst.

"Huh!" Caroline echoed, standing on her tiptoes and craning her neck as if that would let her see the wondrous thing that was on the bigger kid's head.

Cajmera
Huh, indeed. Still beaming, Remy leaned over and pointed at the very small horns, parting his hair slightly so that the the little one could hopefully see them. "See, Caroline? Horns!"

The question was, would she know what that meant?

Junyi
"Hohn?"

No, Caroline didn't quite grasp the concept. After all, having stuff growing out of one's head was normal for her; after all, she did have the small headwings that she inherited from Elle.

Cajmera
"Yes, that's right, horn!" Grinning over at Luna for a moment, Remy whispered (loudly), "She's smart!" Before looking back at Caroline. "Yes, horn, see?"

Flopping down on the floor in a cross-legged fashion, he pointed at the horn in question. "See, they're pointy and they grow out of your head. Mine are black, but I bet that they could be other colors too. And they're new."

Junyi
"New!" Caroline was getting quite good at parroting the words that Remy was using.

"New hohn?"

Cajmera
"Yes, new horns!" She was a smart little kid, alright. "See, they weren't there for a really long time; there was only hair, and then the top of my head. But now there ARE horns there, which is great because I didn't like not having horns."

To put it mildly. His older sister had horns AND a tail, and his mother had horns; consequently, he'd always felt terribly left out. Not that he ever really said that to Kaja or anything, he just FELT it. But not anymore!

"See, you already have wingy things; you didn't have to start out with nothing." Which was nice for her.

Junyi
"Ing 'n' tay!" At that, Caroline proudly turned around and bent over, waggling her tail proudly. "Wiffa bo!" At that, she pointed to the red bow tied above the tuft of hair at the end of her tail.

Cajmera
She DID have a tail, Remy noted. Without really thinking about it, he turned and looked a Luna, the fact that Caroline was mottled and had wings and a tail and Luna had none of the above finally registering. After a cursory glance, though, he determined that no, Luna DIDN'T have a tail and Caroline did; she must take a lot after her father.

"You have a neat tail, Caroline, AND neat wings. And a neat bow. It works on you, cause you're a girl; my sister wears bows in her hair a lot too, though she never put any on her tail."

Junyi
Luna and Jokeph exchanged a brief, uncomfortable glance. How would that go over, anyway? Oh, no, Caroline's just the bizarre consequence of a thorough alien probing that resulted in a genetic trainwreck that somehow, against all odds, found its way into an egg--

...No. She wasn't even going to try.

"Issa moo tay!" Caroline declared proudly.

Cajmera
"A moo tail?" Did she mean a cow tail? Eyeing the tail in question with a scrunched up face, Remy finally decided that that had to be it; he'd never actually seen a cow up close, so he had to take her word on it. It made sense with the spots. And if there were people that had skin like fish, then why not like cows?

"Can you swat flies with it?" That'd be neat to do with a tail!

Junyi
"Satta fi?" She wiggled her tail ineffectually. No, no, it didn't look like she had the coordination to actually hit someone with her tail yet.

Cajmera
Bummer, that would have been really neat. But maybe when the tail was a little longer she'd be able to do something productive with it. In the meantime, simply HAVING it was neat enough.

Glancing back at Luna and Jo, Remy announced, with the air of one making a great pronouncement, "I like your daughter. She's neat!"

Junyi
...Thank you, Luna answered with an awkward smile.

Cajmera
"No problem." Remy was about to say more when the sudden calling out of his name by a nurse caught his attention; he was supposed to be here for a reason, that was right!

Glancing at Caroline, he gave a little wave, then grinned at Luna as he stood up. "It was great to see you guiys, Luna; bye!" And then he was off

His legs folded cross-legged beneath him, Remington sat in the small stand of trees behind their house with an expression of quiet thoughtfulness.

It was so peaceful back here, especially on days like today. Though traces of summer still lingered on in the green of the grass and the warmth of the sunshine, there was a certain bite to the breeze that told Remy that fall was just aroun the corner...if not already arrived.

Tilting his head back, he stared up into the multihued foliage of the canopy above him, the faded greens of late summer blending seamlessly with the golds and oranges and reds of fall.

As he sat there looking, one leaf detached itself from the tree and floated down to land on Remy's knee, a burnt orange leaf almost the exact same color as his hair. After looking at it for a moment, he picked it up and twirled it around between his thumb and forefinger, the thoughtful look never leaving his face.

Another fall, another set of raining leaves, another school year; life went on in the same sort of rotation it always employed. Funny how things could change so much and still be the same...

Sighing, he let the breeze catch the burnt leaf and swirl it away, pulling his denim jacket tighter around himself and leaning against the tree. It was nice here, here alone with his thoughts. Much better than being in school.

Good thing he'd decided to skip today.

Time was a strange thing. Sometimes, like when one was sitting in the middle of a math lecture, it could drag. Other times, like when one was enjoying a particularly good and vigorous nap, it went by way too quickly. And sometimes it just made no sense.

Remy lay upside-down on his bed, his head hanging down over the edge and his hair brushing the floor. Against one bent knee rested a sketchpad, though it was obvious that his thoughts were elsewhere; the pencil he'd been doodling with lay forgotten on the floor beside the bed and the page itself was obscured by shadow. Then again, he'd hardly been intent on a masterpiece; it had only been a way to pass the time.

Time. That word again....
PostPosted: Wed Apr 23, 2008 7:30 pm

Scratching absently at her head with the eraser end of a pencil, Caj walked across the downstairs hallway from the living room to the kitchen without seeming to take any notice of her surroundings. Like a person in a dream, she picked her way through the backpacks, shoes, coats, schoolbooks, and other leavings of her two children without lifting her eyes from the sheaf of papers in her hand OR tripping over any of the many obstacles in her way. Not too bad, if she did say so herself; or rather, not bad if she were actually paying attention.

Making her way to the table, she dropped into a chair, then deposited the sheaf of papers in a neat stack in front of her. Twirling the pencil between thumb and index finger, she ran her gaze down the neat columns of numbers that covered the topmost paper, then made a face. Accouting. How she hated accounting. Always with numbers that ALMOST, but didn't QUITE, balance....

Peeking around the kitchen doorway, Remington watched his mother for a moment in total silence. He'd been waiting for her to get home from work a lot longer than he'd thought he'd have to, and as a result was more than a little bit impatient. However, he knew better than to just barge in with demands when his mother had 'the face.' Ever since he was very small, he had held 'the face' in no small amount of awe. Granted, his older sister Kaja had been the one to explain The Face's significance to him, and older sisters were not always entirely upfront when explaining serious matters to younger siblings...But even knowing that, he still had a healthy respect for "The Face". It meant that his mother was thinking; thinking very hard, without getting any enjoyment out of it. Not good.

So he gave her a few minutes more, waiting and watching from the doorway like a mouse. A tall, redheaded mouse.

But a few minutes was all that he could manage before he gave up and strode loudly into the kitchen. "Mom, do you have any idea what time it is?" A polite way of saying, 'geez you're late!"

Glancing up from her numbers with the slightly glazed expression of one whose attention hasn't been wholly diverted from its previous occupation, Cajmera glanced at her son in absent confusion. "Nine-thirty, isn't it?"

Coming to a halt beside the table, Remington crossed his arms over his chest and gave the answer a solemn nod. "Yes, it's nine-thirty. Mom, you said you'd be home from work over two hours ago. Remember, we were going to go out to dinner tonight?"
