I'm not entirely sure, except that some violins were made expressly for students; they're easier to learn off of, sturdier so you can throw them around a little, but don't allow as elegant playing or rich sound as professional violins.
I've also heard the term refer to machine made, mass produced violins, since only students generally buy those types. Professionals and serious musicians often spring the cash for a more expensive violin.

I got mine through a friend, basiclly all I know is that it's an electric Fender violin. I'm hoping on getting a new one soon.

my violin doesn't have a tag thingy in it so i'm not sure what type it is but it's really good. its dark brown, shiny, has a one piece back, and is narrow but bulges at the middle... yea.

I think it's supposed to come out a little in the middle of the back. Although 'bulge' sounds a little ominous...

Hrm. I have a Knilling 75th Anniversary from '97, I paid about a thousand for it. It's a good violin, I like it a lot. It's got a lighter color and is sort of creamy yellowish 3nodding
I also have a mystery violin *drumroll* I took it to an expert in NC who didn't know who it was made by. It was made in the 40s though, most likely during World War II, and in Germany. It has no identification inside, and the back is stamped below the neck with the word "Steiner." It's obviously not a real Steiner though. It's crudely made and sounds... interesting. When I first came across it it had a snake's rattle inside that we took out with tweezers. It's an old mountain tradition to put a snake's rattle in the violin to ward off evil spirits, no joke. Look it up surprised

My teacher cleaned my violin out with rice... another weird thing. Although not as cool as the snake rattle superstition. whee
