Yay for right answers! biggrin

And I'm kind of an animal nut, so if you ever want to know the name of an animal or any of that, just ask. I may not know the answer off hand, but I have no problems hunting it down! 3nodding

Wow, I'm glad I actually got on Gaia and saw this thread! I've been wanting to learn Swedish, but don't have many IRL resources. It's too bad the audio has expired, but this has still been really helpful so far! Considering I know next to nothing lol

Verb - Verbs

So I thought I'd start off with some grammar now. I'm ill today and I'm home from school, so yeah, here goes. biggrin

Verbs. As in many languages, verbs are... Uh... Yeah, screw it, learn this:

Aktiva vs. passiva - Active vs. passive

öppnar - This is the most common kind of verbs, let's call them active verbs. They're used when you wish to say that someone does something.

öppnas - This is the other kind; passive verbs. They're used when you want to say that some gets an action done to him/her (by someone else).

Example:

Jag öppnar dörren. - I open the door.

Dörren öppnas av mig. - The door is being opened(?) by me.

I used coloured words so that you could easilier understand what the hell I'm talking about. cool And yeah, I'm not sure that the second translation "is being opened" is at any level of correctness at all, but it's all I could come up with right now.Tell me you want further translations. smile

So, this is a very simple sentence, but it's important that you understand the meaning of the grammatical pieces in it. Let's focus on the red word right now.

The red word is a verb; it tells us what someone does/is doing/did/will do etc. Many verbs, but not all, in Swedish can stay in two different forms depending on whether it is used to describe an active or a passive action. The first sentence contains an active action; we can tell from the 'r' at the end of the verb*, because when it's a passive action the 'r' turns into an 's'. So that your difference right there: a letter at the end of the verb. I don't think this should be too complicated, I just wanted to point it out, since it's a little different from English and all. If you guys have any questions what so ever, please ask away. There are no stupid questions, only a lack of information from my side, yes. I got THE very idea of how to make this like THE most informative pice of text ever, but as always, I fail. smile

ASK QUESTIONS! I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S MISSING IN MY LESSON, BUT I'M SURE THERE'S SOMETHING. biggrin

Min anka flög iväg... sad

Vad synd! sad Jag älskar ankor. My aunt used to live right near a pond with tons of geese and ducks, but then she flew away!

Jag hoppar du ska bli god snart. smile
[Hah, I don't think 'god' would be the right word; I had five choices. ^^;]

I didn't know about the passive vs. active verb endings. =o I get it now, though. More tenses is really the only thing I find missing.

Vi bor vid en sjö, så jag sitter och tittar på svanarna ibland. De är ju inte ankor, men de duger! biggrin

And if you want to wish someone to get better you could say "Krya på dig!", which is more or less the same as "I hope you get well soon". smile

And yes, tenses is up next!

Verb - Verbs

Let's move on to tenses, shall we?

Tempus - Verb Tenses

Verb tenses in Swedish correspond to those of English, so this shouldn't be to hard, but there are some difficulties that I'm going to sort out in this lesson. Hopefully you all know what tenses are, but ask me if you don't and I'll explain. Or you could look it up on Wikipedia, I guess. I think their explanations are better than mine.

Infinitiv - Infinitive

att öppna, att öppnas - This is what the infinitive looks like (to go,to run etc.). Att öppna is the active infinitive, while att öppnas is the passive infinitive. Notice the att before the actual verb. It's as important as the verb itself; it has the same status as English to in the English infinitive. The att is commonly pronounced as a short "å" sound, similar to the word och (and). I thought I might tell you this, so you won't be walking around listening for correctly pronounced little atts, because those are more or less nonexistant. biggrin

Nutid - Present tense

öppnar, öppnas - Present tense, yo! Öppnar is the active and öppnas is the passive. This is the only irregular tense when it comes to the active vs. passive thing. The rest will follow a certain pattern. I hope. But yes, present tense! To make the active present tenseout of the infinitive: remove the att and add an "r" to the end. To make the passive present tense, just remove the att. The att is only used with the infinitve. Capite? smile

Dåtid - Past tense

öppnade, öppnades - It might come in handy to know the past tense too, right? Yes, that's what I thought. To make the past tense out of the infintive: remove att and add -de to the end. And this is where the passive starts to follow the certain pattern: you do everything exactly as with the active, but you add an "s" to the end. Easy, no?

In Swedish, there are irregular verbs as well, which don't follow the given pattern, but I'll tell you those later as they come across. Bye for now!
