it came for her anytime she thought she was safe, and it tried to take her down with it, promising relief if she would just give in and let it suck her down into oblivion. The vines were a passing annoyance compared to how much black sludge she had to pull herself away from. Her skin was red again, and she flopped down on the shore to nurse her wounds and press her hands against the angered flesh. "Not this time." She called out to Dawson, waving him off gently. "Good luck, babe."

He gave a somber tilt of his hat in understanding. It wasn't the first time, but he still didn't like leaving her out in the open like that.

One couldn't say exactly how Dawson survived the gauntlet to the garden of shiny things: how, even weighted down by stone scarabs, he still managed to outrun the boar that nearly tore him a new a*****e. But one thing was for sure: he was super, super done for the day.

She looked like she was absolutely bursting with energy, and it only got worse as he asked her how she'd healed. She knew he wasn't asking about all of the other welts and bruises that a day at the temple left on both of their bodies. She knew that he understood exactly what injury mattered to her. So she bent up on her tiptoes when she reached him, jutted her cheek out in front of his face, and patted it excitedly with her finger. "See for yourself!" She'd woken up without even the faintest scar, and the day had only gotten better from there. It was like she considered herself useful again; as if that one tiny line could have crumbled her the way the lion that huffed nearby begged to be crumbled.

"Thaw is brilliant." She coo'd, and felt the agreeable rumble of wordless gratitude for her compliment. She summoned him, and felt his power vibrating between her fingertips. If only she could focus enough to utilize it, Thaw could have struck a deadly blow.
Instead, she bumbled with her hit, still riding the distracting high of seeing her face unmarred once more.
