Oh, I admit it. Americans are weird about stratification; must be some kind of supercrazyreligiousrelation, though, given the way that our nation was founded versus how some of the other colonies/protectorates came into being. The Australian Lolitas and even [to a degree, they're similar to us] Canadian Lolitas are generally more prone to experimentation.

Honestly, most of the reason I, personally, do not stretch the "rules" of lolita too far is because I don't have all that much that actually qualifies as lolita clothing. The most I do is mix cute t-shirts or heels with skirts and jumpers, to make my wardrobe stretch further, y'know?

That's more a matter of practicality than anything else, though. Like I admitted to a friend recently, I'm dying to do a frilly-erotic sailor lolita outfit to go to a club sometime. Complete with giant stompy boots, fishnets and hardware.

I think it'd be an absolute blast. (:

Oh I love wearing my boots, outrageous colours and leg warmers. It's compfortable for me, allthough I know it miffs other lolis off.
For example...and If I see this image on a lolita f**k community, I wont be impressed guys...I'm not trying to parade around saying this is lolita, i'm just saying this is my punky lolitaness whilst being compfortable...

Here i'm doing everything "wrong", allthough I am inspired by Nana Kitade's style...the big poofy petticoat with the punk influence. I read in the US bible that she gets sad when she sees a skirt thats not poofed enough, I totally agree! Another thing i've done "wrong" is wear a copy skirt that I bought for £20 in Camden Town, the shop has now burnt down crying !

But yeah, what I'm saying is that I will wear clashing colours, spikes, piercings...you name it I will do it!

I can do it 'properly' too though...just seems a bit...I dunno...can do more with it? I love all of the good Japanese loli's who have loads of rings, accesories, huge head bows and amazing nails with BIG hair! Love it biggrin

Well, I'm certainly not going to post this to one of those [nor am I a member of LF anyway] but I do have to say that there are some things I see that will bug me with an outfit. Not necessarily because it's "not lolita" but just because I don't like how it looks. Subjectivity in the fashion, and yadda yadda. Certain coordinates or color uses or what not just kind of don't sit right with me, you know? I mean, hell, even some of the "perfectly coordinated" looks make me flinch [like a lot of what AP puts out for their blogs; the individual pieces are great, but together it just looks weird to me in many cases].

Your first outfit there, as an example, I think is fine. The layering and the belt and all the fun colors are great, it's casual and kind of silly and quirky. Overall, I think it's awesome, but in the end, the leg warmers don't quite click with me. I can't really explain beyond that, and it's not because of the "not lolita" argument, either. Maybe it's because you don't have shoes on in the photo so they're just all over rather than actually acting like leg warmers? But. Yeah. ANYWAY. Arm and leg warmers don't bother me as a rule [it depends on the pair and the outfit as a whole; I think that legwarmers and boots can look really nice with a casual winter outfit if done right]. I'm one of the weirdos that think that they can work, but for the most part it seems like the people who wear them just don't know how to pull it off. Like, they'll wear the biggest, floppiest pair they can find which hardly ever looks good on anybody but an anime character, they'll wear them with what's otherwise a very streamlined look, or else they'll wear an otherwise very sloppy outfit and it just adds to the mess. I hope that my logic there makes sense?

I've done it myself, so I'm definitely not immune to the sort of comment I'm making here, either. Looking back at the photos I have, I realize that for the outfit, it didn't look good at all. I was trying to make something that wasn't even close to lolita into lolita and failed. That experience and ending up on LF have actually taught me a lot more than just looking at images ever have, to be honest. It's also made me a lot more tolerant for newcomers needing help or guidance [since when I first started out, most people didn't offer any real advice and just kind of let me blunder along]. It's also made my eye for western brand finds a lot sharper in terms of when I'm out shopping. In being told that western brands couldn't be lolita, it sort of became a challenge to see if I could find things that could be.

When I saw a recent post on EGL, made me really happy in terms of the idea of coordinations and getting around the whole "Brand Whore" idea. I mean, I love the brand pieces I have, they're wonderful to wear and look fabulous, but it's also fun to find things that other lolitas might not have in terms of clothing as well, right? In that post up there, faunkegin/Ashlee wrote about and reviewed places to find lolita accessories, blouses, cardigans and so on. She talked about shopping just in regular, every day stores like H&M, Forever21, Charlotte Russe or Claire's, and it was really encouraging, to be honest. I'd heard of good finds, but the ones she posted were just fabulous and work for other things as well. So the quest can continue!

Hehe I never meant the whole 'if I ever see this posted blah blah' towards you, it was a quiet threat to anyone else who was thinking it.

Yeah I see it as, I don't care, I will wear poofy skirts and what not...and tbh England is soooo cold! You need all the layers you can get ;-; hence the leg warmers. I guess the point that most people forget with these things is that...we know what we're doing, eg...I know that those leg warmers are wrong, but damn it's funny watching some of the elitists squirm (;

I absoloutly love brand name dresses but never will I be able to afford them, so I think the more westernized lolita gear, the better. I prefere to make things anyway, and I love the challenge of finding non brands in random places too!

Atm in England high waisted flaired skirts seem to be in fashion...I'm contemplating buying one and putting my petti underneath to see what effect I can get biggrin

rar I'm going to stop typing this now as I'm so ill the screen is going blurry ;-; I love having chats like this, it's fun! This is what this guild is missing, good intelegent convosation!

Oh and Lolita Dinosaur, let me know how you find it!!!

Yeah, there have definitely been a lot of single-word, single-line posts of late. I've been trying to stimulate conversation and failing. ._.;

Kind of frustrating, but this thread is a nice little refuge, right?

Also, I always thought I wasn't going to be able to afford brand, but then I started digging around for deals on EGL. It's really a good practice, since I've managed to find most of my wardrobe for WAY less than the original cost by doing it. I don't get to splurge often, so I make sure to keep a stash held in reserve just in case I see something.

Like yesterday, for example. I haven't bought anything since December when I got my Baby LP, but I found by chance an AatP sailor jumper from 95AUD on EGL [which included shipping to the US, too]. That's a little less than half of the original price, because of the fact that it's missing the bow for the sailor collar [which doesn't bother me at all, since I had always kind of wanted to do the traditional scarf-style knot for that dress]. All of my other brand name pieces short of my Baby LP and a few Meta odds and ends have come off of that community, too. The deals are really nice if you're on a budget.

I know the UK gets hit with customs pretty hard, too, so buying second hand is nice since you can have them mark down the price or mark it as a gift to hopefully get around the worst of it all, y'know? In any case, it makes it easier to expand your wardrobe of usable items if there are particular brand name pieces you like [that jumper I found is one I've been dying to have for ages but figured I'd never get since it sold out and was taken off the site, as an example]. Granted, you have to really have a hawk's eye sometimes. There are a few girls who just absolutely horde clothing and snatch sales up like it's nothing. ):

Tis true! EGL is fantastic, even though I have no money half the time, I like to browse around. Most of the time things are going for something like $30 and thats cheap in UK pounds, so already i've found a great deal!

Don't diiiiiiiiie. D:
Also, I just moved a post to the recycle bin, you may want to go take a look at it. I was pretty sure that we don't allow posts like that, and the Gaia ToS is kind of fuzzy as to how they handle the matter, so I figured better-safe-than-sorry, right?

Anyhow. In terms of sales posts, EGL is always fun to browse. I love that community for the photo posts and the sales especially.

Check Borders and Barnes & Noble. I haven't gone to either yet, but I'm pretty confident that when I go tomorrow they'll be there. If not, mmmn. Well. I guess I'll have to order from Amazon after all. haha

I have checked Barnes & Noble two days ago, thinking it was already out. ^^;
Thank you, I'll have to check again.

Well, I bought one today in Barnes & Noble. I'm definitely going to just buy it online next time. It's cheaper, for one, and there's less hassle in trying to get a hold of it. It was kind of a pain to find and I had to actually ask for help, since I checked four different sections to no avail [fashion and photos, magazines, teen and comics/manga]. Even then, the girl and I had to stand and stare at the shelves for a while. It was back in fashion by the photography and art books, but kind of smooshed in between all the larger volumes of things. It took me a while to find it, but it was there in the end.

You may want to ask an employee if you're still having trouble with finding it, though. They might be able to order a copy for you if they're sold out.
