Occasionally you can find the best of both worlds-- take Larxene, for example. Well known, so people won't think you just "half-assed something anime-ish", but rarely cosplayed, so you won't be one of a crowd of the same character.

I like to do both. I use to hate doing main characters and then I started to cosplay Ash Ketchem from Pokemon and absolutly loved the attention. I use to get stuck cosplaying the minor characters alot with friends and what not, but I also try to vary my costumes by what you don't see too often to what you see more of each year. And I just cosplay whatever the hell I want when I want to when it comes down to it. Easiest way to pick.

*wanders in, new to the guild* I'm both, I guess. I honestly prefer to be unique, but I have a good variety of things that are popular, too. For instance, I have several Naruto and Bleach costumes (but hey, my friend and I started cosplaying those series when they were still new...) but I also have Darkstalkers, Bakuretsu Hunter, Innocent Venus and such costumes. In those costumes, no one really knew who I was. But I love being able to go on cosplay.com and see that I'm the only one of that character and/or series. A portion of popular things I have are because I get roped into it by my friends or anime club for gatherings or skits. I'm gullible like that...

Both. ^^; I just like cosplaying characters I like, regardless of how popular they are. xD
Popular: Tifa Lockhart, Haruhi Suzumiya, SnJ Sasuke
Less known, but still known: Yoko Ritona, Suigintou
Never seen cosplayed before: Miyo Takano (Major uniform), humanoid GLaDOS, GARuhi
Mind you, none of the above are actually finished except for Tifa and Haruhi but yeah... xD The only one I did out of convenient was SnJ Sasuke. The rest are just characters I love. <3

But I want to do Joe, Jin, Sana and Qing Ling. I may be doing Qing Ling later this year with a Renee cosplayer. <3

I'm planning them for a fall convention since my spring/summer cons are pretty tight as it is. I'm hoping maybe I can squeeze it in for Otakon, but that's pushing it.

I do a little of both.
I'm probably the only Comic Party cosplayer you'll ever meet (and as of this year, I'll have done all but 2 leading females :O) but, I've also done things like Summoner Yuna, and KH2 Aerith, and I'm doing a series of Lucky*Star cosplays. I mostly only use the really well known ones for Halloween and smaller cons.

I've been picking characters that are recognizable (as in from popular anime, although there seem to be far and few between Gundam Wing cosplayers anymore) because I like getting noticed and hugs and pictures. But I've been dying to do something different. I would LOVE to cosplay as Alexial from Angel Sanctuary because I hardly see her, let alone anyone cosplay from that anime/manga. And she would just be an awesome and complex cosplay on my part. So... I'd kind of hope people would recognize her or at least ask me who I was so I could spread the glory of AS. ^_^ (I love Kaori Yuki, the AS manga artist.)

Well, I like to be unique, and once, due to an obscure video game cosplay..(last year's youmacon) I got 75$ in merchandise FREE from a vendor because he not only knew WHO i was...but said I was the best he'd seen OUTSIDE of japan as that character...and he took a entire digicam full of pics of me.
the costume? Talon/Sarutobi Sasuke from devil kings/Sengoku basara.
he was upset when he learned he missed seeing me as another character from the same game, Arslan/Chousokabe Motochika.
dang, I love my mad crossplay skills. ^__^

I wasn't being full of myself. I was just glad I did a good enough job on the character he was recognized is all. I wasn't expecting the free stuff either..I had my wallet out to PAY for it when the vendor actualy got a look at me..the dealer room was crowded...so the chances of him seeing me before that point were slim to none.
an up until a week before the con, I didn't even PLAN to have that costume at all.
besides, this is a forum for unique/rare vs. common...not a sniping thread.
I was just sharing a story to encourage people to try and be unique is all. after all, 28 Sasuke's from naruto at one convention gets old pretty fast.
