Whenever someone plans to do a cosplay, it takes a lot of work. The sewing, the planning, the painting, the stressing... but sometimes the easiest part can be the most difficult.
"What do I want to cosplay?"
So here's the question:
When you cosplay, do you go for characters that people will recognize? Or do you prefer going for a unique cosplay that only few will appreciate, but you enjoy nonetheless? It may seem like a silly question and mods feel free to delete it if it's inappropriate, but let me use myself as an example.
---------------------------
I went to AX'06 as Hinamori Momo for my first cosplay.
Needless to say I fell in love with the whole con and cosplaying experience. I loved having people appreciate my hard work and take my picture.
The next year, AX'07, I wanted to have that same feeling. I went for a really generic character that most people were guaranteed to know.
Haruno Sakura from Naruto: Hurricane Chronicles.
Personally, I love having my picture taken. It's really flattering, and I don't think I would enjoy cosplay as much if I wasn't able to flaunt the fruit of my labor.
(on another note: this year I plan on cosplaying Lenalee from D.Grayman, would you say that people will recognize me? xD?)
I'm not sure if my threads are appropriate for the guild, ah well, let's get this guild active! >D!

The odd time I'll probably do an over rated chara but I prefer doing characters that no one else or very few are doing xDD;; plus it's no fun seeing everybody wearing the same costume D:
For Linali im sure people will recognize you =] I think D.GM's popularity is starting to rise now.

I prefer to do characters from lesser known animes, which tend to be my faves anyway. I don't mind seeing others cosplaying the same character, I just feel that the animes/mangas I love don't get enough love. I have a long list of cosplays that I want to do(Yes, I actually keep a list) and it keeps growing.
I'm not one who cares if I'm recognized by a bunch of people, but the few who do know who I'm cosplaying as make me happy. I go to cons to have fun and hang out with people not really to have my picture taken, but I don't mind if someone asks and I find cosplaying better than roaming around in my normal clothes.
I agree with Sumiireko, I only have one really popular cosplay because I prefer not to see a million other people cosplaying the same thing as me. I enjoy being unique.

The Light will show you the way, but you must endure the darkness; For it will show you the stars. hmm that's pretty interesting..
i like both equally actually.. like i want people to know who my character is and not just take pics of me because my cosplay looks "cool" i want them to at least know who the character is or maybe even if the pic is for a friend.. that happened to me a lot during ALA this year. a lot of people took pics of me because it was cool and all but a lot of them didnt know who i was :/ but i still like the fact that it's unique because i was the only Haseo Xth Form there. and probably the first or only Haseo Xth to crossplay him in SoCal

I usually consider both when choosing a character to cosplay. I don't particularly like being one of those over-cosplayed characters; I suppose it's just in my personality because I'm like that with fashion trends ans such, too.
The characters I have chosen so far are fairly unique and recognizable, I think...Though, with Ururu, I got a lot of "Hey, it's that one girl from Bleach!" ;D

you know, i don't think I've really taken being recognizable or unique into consideration when i pick out characters i want to cosplay. i basically just choose my favorite characters.if it happens to be a recognizable character, thats cool. if it happens to be someone who isn't recognized as much but is unique, thats awesome too. but i just base my costumes on my favorite characters XD

Well... Untill now I've actually only cosplayed characters that are only a little known in my country but very famous in other countries. XD So thats both unique and recognizeable. I dont like either of those two. Or I mean, recognizeable is good of course!! My first cosplay in 2005.. I wore it at a convention the same year and got tons of fangirls o_O.. Then two years later I wanted to cosplay the character again cause I've heard the serie has become more popular, but then noone recognized me at all.. Thats the first time I've done a cosplay but havent really been recognized for it. Which made me decide I might try to do some more recognizeable cosplays in the future. XD For now I've just gone for the not over-cosplayed characters as I hate that D: Its really not funny to show up at a convention and cosplaying a character everyone else cosplays. Especially not in my country where the conventions are so small and cosplayers actually rare >_>;.

Sounds wishy-washy, but I like to do both. I do want to be noticed, but I also want to do something special. Being unique makes is feel all the more rewarding, because it's really sweet when you get someone who is thrilled to see you do such a character. At AX07, I did Lucy/Nyuu of Elfen Lied. I probably only had my picture taken some ten times (I didn't keep strict count), had a few people call out to me and get excited, and I saw three other Lucys, though they wore a different outfit from the show. Not to mention, it was my first serious cosplay, so it was a good chance to ease in and not be swarmed by the masses. I'm going to do her again this year while wearing the outfit she wore later in the show whee I enjoy being her because I like her and she's unique.

I consider a bit of both, especially if I'm going as an over-cosplayed character. Like, throw in a silly prop or something. When I eventually do Rukia's school uniform, instead of going with the glove I want to get a sketch book and use her silly drawings. biggrin

Why isn't "Because I love a character/series and want to show everyone else my love of it" one of the options :<
For me cosplay isn't about the glamor or glory, although sometimes it is nice to be recognized and to ask your photo to be taken, but for me cosplay is an expression of my love for a series or particular character, otherwise just an excuse to hang around with my friends in costume. Also for me it's more satisfying when I cosplay a fairly unknown character/series because it makes me excited to know that there are other people who at least know what else I'm reading/watching!

I kind of figured that if people had joined this guild that they would already have a love of cosplay, so I didn't feel that had to be a factor to even be questioned.
I was just directing it to see what other incentives drive people to cosplay, besides the personal satisfaction, ya know?

I really don't choose one, I kind of cosplay whoever the hell I want and if people recognize me, that's a plus. My Deidara cosplay was only recognized by a few people (then again, he just appeared in the manga back then) and it didn't bother me. It only bothered me when someone thought I was Itachi. Ugh.
But yeah, I enjoy cosplaying characters I love, whether they're recognizable or not.

Well... half of the anime i like is known, though it is old school at this point. (DBZ and Sailor Moon) And the rest is from lesser known Animes however the one is gaining popularity. (Hellsing and Vampire Hunter D)
So id have to go for unique... you can only see so many (and my many i mean like 50+ cosplays of popular anime characters before you want to gouge your eyes out. And it doesnt matter after a point if the cosplays are good or bad...
i can only handle so many Naruto characters (sorry if your a fan), FF characters (i do like it though), and other such things... before my brain destroys itself.

I don't really mind one way or the other, as long as I'm in something that is outrageous. XD
