Mallow gave a hoot of agreement back towards Odd and then fell fairly silent once more. Flying was probably one of the only tasks that caused the Medic to actually shut up. She could splint a delicate bone back together and be merrily chuckling the whole time, but flying and talking? ...That just didn't work with her coordination skills, much to her dismay.

So she kept on going, looking back every so often to make sure no one was lost or too far behind.

----------

After quite a good while, Mallow finally alighted on a large branch. She fluffed and then shook out her feathers (much to Glaz's discomfort). The air had grown colder and the shadows were darker now that the moon's light was almost blocked out from the tall trees.

They were definitely in the deep woods now.

Mallow glanced around with blinking, gold eyes as she waited for Odd to land near her. She rolled her shoulders and lowered herself further on the branch.

The pale feathered aberrant landed with noticably more precision this time as he took a space a little further out on the limb. He certainly liked the Medic's company, but he still had the uneasy feeling he might cause her more discomfort if he were any closer to her, as that was his solution to nearly every social situation. Others did not like to be close.

As many fledlgings put it when he was younger, "they did not want him to get his white on them."

He gave a soft exhale as he preened feather after feather to set them right after the long and awkwardly silent flight. He had to admit, he was glad to be back in the dark depths of the forest, for it was here he felt better and his eyes did not have to strain quite so much due to the thickly entwined limbs and leaves above.

"Well. I have to admit, it's good to be back." And it was. He could recognize the trees here and his territory was not that far away. He was still a bit worried about the chirops, but Beetle said they were fine...

And speaking of Beetle, the little blighter was working his white wings hard as he lugged the small collection of dandelions after the two sentinels. They were long gone, but he could still smell them...

Mallow looked up from the feathers she had been preening. "Oh," she started and her eartufts lifted, "you're from this area?" she asked lightly, innocently. A smile showed up on her face a moment later and it almost crinkled into her eyes.

"Splendid! Because I honestly haven't been in this area for quite some time -- it's just gone clean out of me!" She gave a chuckle and shifted her body to face him a little more. With a blink of her eyes she gave a quick glance about and then looked over her shoulder at Glaz, who was still attached to her back like a little gray growth.

"I hope Beetle is alright." The Medic looked to Odd with one eye, her words sincere even though her previous exclamation still hung and danced in the air.

"Mmmhmmm, my territory isn't that far from here. I still have the oak they assigned to me when I became a medic. I figure I'd leave when they picked someone else to take my place." He preened his tired wings quietly after he spoke and his strained eyes wandered to Mallow's blurry form.

"I can certainly lead the way, but I imagine it'd take more than a night to reach the southern edges, especially with what we've traveled tonight."

And Beetle, he hadn't come back yet... Certainly he would be fine. He wasn't head hauncho stud for nothing. He was a bright, inquisitive little fellow.

"He'll find us before long."

The Wildtype nodded her head almost reluctantly. If Odd said the little critter would find them, then he would... right? RIGHT. She gave a small shake and roused her feathers to clear her mind, then gave a quick preen to her chest. Glaz gave an almost aggravated chitter, but caught himself and piped up.

"Well," Mallow began as she exhaled, "you taking the lead will probably be the best thing, mmhmm? And if I see anything I'll give ya a hoot?"

"That sounds perfect." Odd Winter replied in his soft, usual voice. That would be better than he had hoped for, actually. He could focus on leading his new friend through the forest and she could worry about finding the little surviving flowers. Poor eyesight would remain a mystery for at least a little while longer. That was certainly a relief for the pale aberrant.

"Shall we be off, or would you like to rest a little while longer?" He asked politely as he preened and placed through his feathers the way he had been taught so long ago.

"Oh, we could be off now. I can last a little while longer." She gave a small nod and a reconfirming smile. A second later though she extended a wing and gave a quick glance to her flight feathers, just to make double sure that all was well. Can't ever be too sure!

When she readjusted said wing, she looked back at Odd and chuckled. "Yup, all's good. Show the way, oh leader of mine!"

Hmm...

He still couldn't shake the discomfort that he had felt this entire time. The whole affair was so unusual, especially the fact that he was helping her and she didn't mind. In fact, though he could be mistaken, she seemed happy enough to let him help.

His chest swelled slightly with pride and he roused his feathers as he prepared himself for flight.

"Right then, the way is easy." He pushed off his chosen limb and flew with deliberate speed and way. Moth was still nearby, but he could see much better in the darkness of the Deep Woods. Still, one never knew just how much the storm changed the surroundings...

Mallow pushed off a moment later, causing the branch to bob just ever so slightly and Glaz to give a sudden squeak. The little chirop was still not used to such powerful lift-offs!

The Medic gave a hooting laugh, though, and parted through the air to catch up to the pale Sentinel. When she got just behind him and off to the left a little, she eased up slightly and smoothed her wing beats.

The Deep Woods was such a lovely place... even if the storm left some things tattered. Hopefully it let some flowers survive...

Odd's flight was much easier now and he seemed much more sure of himself. He obtained an almost grace that he did not possess out of the Deep Woods, a grace that Breeze had taught him despite the problems he presented to her upon their first meeting.

"Things've changed..." He sighed as he pushed on through the distorted terrain that the Thunderbird had left in his wake. While he would never be able to pick out the shape of a dandelion against the forest floor quite like another sentinel, he glanced down now and again... If anything, it was just to make Mallow believe that he was actually searching.

Mallow skirted over a partially broken branch as Odd spoke and she gave a small nod of her head. "Indeed they have," she stated, almost a little sad. Change was good, though, and Noctus knew that Noctua needed some desperately in certain places.

With a blink of her nictitating membrane, the Medic looked back down to scan the ground below and almost stopped flying right then and there. Low and behold, dandelions! At ten o'clock!

"Odd, down on your left! Dandelions!" she cried a moment later, laughing.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 19, 2008 7:31 pm

And to the left he veered, although he wasn't sure exactly where the said dandelions were resting. He was surprised that any had survived intact, what with the high winds the Thunderbird had brought to the forest.

He opted to perch on a sturdy, wide limb and stared into the abyss that was the ground. He couldn't make out the shapes of the dandelions amidst the rest of the foliage, but pinned his gaze on Moth, who was fluttering over the spot.

"Here! Here!" She squeaked as she circled at a safe, high distance.

"Ah! A wonder the poor things survived! How well intact do they look?"

Mallow alighted next to him on the branch. Below, she watched as Moth fluttered around above the little flowers.

"They look splendid!" she commented out-loud to herself, and then moved to a much lower branch. She continued to stare down at them, making a guesstimate of how many there were.

"I think there are only two," she said, her voice loud so that Odd could hear from above. Two was a good number, though, considering the current circumstances.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 19, 2008 7:57 pm

"That's good... Two is better than none." He replied in a rather merry tone. For the first time in ages he was actually in a rather pleasant mood, though he still couldn't help but worry a bit about his own territory and about Breeze.

His eartufts shifted slightly as another sound caught his attention. Wingbeats, and small ones at that. Beetle was flying towards him with his paws full of the remaining flowers. It had taken him a while and much searching, but he had found them.

The little companion landed next to Odd and wordlessly deposited the flowers at his talons, before retreating to his master's feathery back for a rest.

"Two is indeed a fine number!" chuckled the Medic. She turned her head around and gave a few short words to the gray lump that still clung to her back. Glaz gave a few chitters and squeaks, but soon enough took flight.

As he made for the yellow flowers below, his wings beating in a frenzy and his course a little zig-zaggy for a dive, Mallow pushed off from her low perch and landed back up where Odd was in a flurry of wing and feathers. With a few steps, she brought herself around to face the proper direction and tucked in her wings.

"Oh, Beetle returned!" she noted a moment later. Her gold eyes went from the white, almost invisible lump on Odd's back to the little clump of limp dandelions near the Keeper's feet. "And all the flowers look to be accounted for. Thank you oh so much, Beetle!" She gave a coo and a hoot, and was then joined again by Glaz, who deposited the two flowers at her own feet.
