In the spirit of new year glam and sparkle, this here is a 'prettiest pair contest!' Thats right, its time for those amongst the Kitsusagi population to gather together and then spread their pretty genes heart

Fairytale Contest

Open: NOW
Closes: 31st January 2009, time to be confirmed

Here we go, another little contest for y'all, but this is of a totally different stream wink You're invited to take on the role of a Hans Christian Anderson or the Brothers Grimm in the Kitsusagi world.

Fairytales have helped shape childhoods, so why should Kitsusagi be any different? Every culture has its own set of creation myths, legendary heroes, and curseable monsters. And the effects of such stories can still be seen today, in the way people might treat snakes, or in the way a type of person might be revered or ridiculed.

So, what do you have to do, and what happens at the end?

You are not asked to simply make Kitsu versions of Snow White or Cinderella or Red Riding Hood. That'd be boring xD By all means, use the elements of fairytales, like evil parents, kindly fairies, cruel wild things, etc, and craft YOUR OWN VERSION of a Kitsusagi fairytale. What would an adult Kitsu tell their children at bedtime? Perhaps its something wicked in the woods, to teach them not to stray too far from home. Or maybe its a kindly old kitsu who turns out to be a beauty in disguise, to teach kindness and judgement.

Its preferred if written in prose but you can write it as though a Kitsu is telling the story smile

The prize?

Well, you get your fairytale character smile Treat it like a custom. Anything (normals, subspecies, etc) is possible, but with these small restrictions;
- no cosplays, for original fairytale characters only
- angelic/nitemare lines, but they won't be ACTUAL angelics/nitemares
- no seraphim

If you still have questions, please feel free to ask me when you see me smile

Rules
1. Please be respectful of others, whether they enter or not. Keep this a friendly thread.
2. Keep things within Gaia TOC where possible. Some original fairytales were gruesome, but if you can handle it delicately, you'll be fine.
3. Please do not whine, flame, troll, or otherwise make a nuisance of yourself.
4. All entries to be made in this thread please.
5. No word limit, but please keep it reasonable. These have to be judged so no essays or novels.
6. Completely free to enter, and the winners get the free custom fairytale characters.

To enter, please post the following;

"I'm the next Hans Kitsu Anderson!"
Name: Sweetdeily
Title of Fairytale: The Beast
Entry:

“And in the castle, a handsome prince was born. He was dark eyed and fair-haired and many of the young Kitsu girls of the Realm liked him, but beyond his looks- he was an arrogant Kitsu, cruel and mean- who had no love for anyone but himself.” The old Kitsu’s voice trailed off as he spoke, his cloudy eyes far away, not even looking at the children’s book nesting on his lap.
“But grandpa’ why didn’t the prince care about anyone else but himself?” The little Kitsu asked. The old Kitsusagi smiled at the girl- he didn’t mind her calling him grandpa; they weren’t related by anything more than the little Kitling’s mother- overworked trying to pay for enough food for her and her child, she had collapsed and the old man had tucked her into bed and come in to put her daughter to sleep as well. He asked for no recompense for his duties, nor did he expect food, or shelter. It was hard these days to find such a selfless Kitsusagi. His tired crimson eyes looked lost- as though this ‘Grandpa’ was hollow inside. He was the sort of man who you could find wandering the streets- just another old, forgotten man. He must have been a charmer in his youth.
“Because, little Kitling, the prince was spoiled rotten- he was never told to go to bed on time, and he always got to eat too many sweets, and when a servant upset him; the servant was removed.” The old Kitsu explained patiently.
“But then why didn’t the king and queen spank the bad Kitsu?” The girl asked with the logic held only by the young.
“Oh, they thought it was too mean, they couldn’t bring themselves to upset their only son.”
“So what happened then? Did the bad prince meet a good princess and become a good prince?”
“No… no… nothing so sweet as that, Kitling. The bad prince met an old woman.”
“An old woman?” The girl wriggled her nose at this point and frowned. “Yuck!”
The Grandpa laughed and flipped the page in the storybook. “Yes, that was what the bad prince said as well…”

“Please kind sir, it is freezing outside and I am too old to make it to the town below-” the woman’s begging continued, her shrill voice carried through the entry-hall and into the downstairs study where Karathos’d had just about enough of her whining. He had told the servants to send any travelers away for the night as he didn’t want their dirty paws on his freshly cleaned marble. And the servants were obviously not being stern enough. He put down his knitting needles and stormed to the doors, the boots on his paws clicking smartly as he crossed from the rugs of his warm study to the cold white marble of the entry-hall. The servant at the door was Tessa, the prince's most loyal and trusted of servants, but her heart was loathe to turn the poor old woman away.
“What IS this commotion?” Karathos hissed, his gleaming, arrogant crimson eyes looking down on his cowering servant and the haggard old woman at his door.
“Please- I beg you noble sire… just until the storm lets up- I am weak, and frail…” The woman began again, only to trail off as she saw the unforgiving, cruel smirk that broke out upon the arrogant prince’s face.
“Well perhaps you should have thought of that before you let yourself get old and wrinkly!” The prince snorted. “Now away with you, hag! I’ll not have your filthy rags touching one inch of my castle!”
Tessa could not stop the prince from slamming the doors himself and she stared as he walked away, so cold and unfeeling.
That night, the prince had a dream unlike any other selfish, malicious dream he had ever had. In his dream he stood in the thick bur woods that he often hunted in; but he stood in his best clothing, with no sword or weapon in the deep snow. Around him, a blizzard raged and warred- making it impossible to hear or see much of anything. But as he stumbled through the snow, shaking and cold, in the freezing night air, he came upon a bundle of rags under a large tree.
No, it was no bundle or carelessly forgotten parcel; it was an old Kitsusagi- her gray arms and legs buried deep within the snow.
“What is this- someone get this out of my way!” The prince bellowed. Only he was dreaming, and in his dream, there were no servants to come running, no men to drag away the terrible sight that stood before him. The prince looked at the beggar woman’s corpse- as though he were forced to- and in his heart, he had pity for the woman- but no remorse or guilt.
And through the forest and the storm, a beautiful Kitsusagi came walking. She was pale and white as snow, her face the color of blood, dripping from a frozen blade- her eyes were angry and black, as though looking into her eyes, Karathos saw himself reflected, and he saw how ugly he had become.
“Her blood is on your hands.”
Karathos snorted, and looked away- he could not bear to see himself in those strange eyes. “I did not kill her! Someone, someone take this witch away!”
“Everyone has left you, Karathos. You are a cruel prince- arrogant and uncaring. Yet many are fooled by your charming appearance- you are no Prince Charming- your heart is cold and barren. You do not even hold a care for your most loyal servants, who wait on you with love, not fear. You are truly vile.” The witch circled Karathos, she had many tails, and the tips ran around his body, brushing him here and there, like many Kitsu girls would do- as though teasing him. But when this Kitsusagi’s fur brushed his, it hurt; like little tiny knives were running up and down his skin- cutting and slicing him.
“Stop it, witch! I’ll have you executed!” Karathos found his voice- hollow and scared. Without his loyal, fearing servants, how would he do that- he was alone… in a dream.
“But I am not without hope that you can be saved- vile prince. When you wake, you must complete for me three tasks- or again I will come to you, and I will cast a horrible spell upon you.”
“What… what tasks?” The arrogant prince asked.
“The first task is the task of beauty- you must go into the woods and find the most beautiful rose therein, bring the rose back to your cold castle. The second task is that of nurturing, you must plant the rose from the woods in your castle and make it grow. And the third task is that of love; you must give the rose to the first woman who walks through the castle gates in three moon’s time.” The witch spoke. “Do these three tasks and I shall spare you from my spell. Fail them, and you shall spend the rest of your days with your cruelty and malice reflected on the outside as well as the inside!”

“Did the prince do the tasks?” The Kitling asked, her eyes wide, her ears quivering. She showed no signs of sleepiness, and instead seemed intent on the story. The old Kitsu chuckled and nodded.
“The next morning the prince sent all his servants into the forest, to find the most beautiful rose that bloomed in all the forest. Finally, his servants returned, frost-bitten and some had suffered attacks by wild animals, but his most trusted servant, a young peasant girl by the name of Tessa succeeded in the end. Then, for the second task the young prince sent all his servants to every end of the realm to find him the best gardener that money could buy- again, his best servant Tessa, the peasant, brought a gardener of the most magical skill before him-“
“So he was succeeding in the tasks?” The Kitling interrupted.
“Oh, well the prince thought he was- anyway, the prince paid the gardener to nurture and grow the rose in his castle. And grow it did, until it was the most beautiful, thick, perfect red rose that had ever been seen. It never wilted, nor did its petals ever fall from its head. And then, when the time had passed, the prince threw a huge ball, inviting all the young noble Kitsu’s of the Realm to attend-”
“And he gave the rose to the first girl to walk through the door?” She asked eagerly.
“No.” The grandpa replied with a sagely nod.
“No? But he was going so well! What happened?”
“The prince had his servants wait by the gate that day, ready to give the beautiful rose to the first lady who walked into his castle. Only his servant, Tessa, came that day- with a present from the wise-woman of a town to celebrate the prince’s change of heart- a beautiful mirror that showed whatever one truly desired to look upon. Tessa presented the mirror to the prince, but he tossed it aside, breaking the glass and told her not to bother with such trivial things. Her heart broken, for Tessa loved the prince- despite his cruelty and tempers, despite his arrogance and malicious nature, she had fallen for him, much as any number of young girls had. The peasant girl ran into the evening, and was never seen at the prince’s castle again-”
“If the prince was so mean, I would have kicked him in the shins!” The Kitling announced proudly.
The grandpa chuckled. “I’m sure he would have changed his wicked ways too- a good kick in the shins can do the world of good. Now where was I?”
“The flower! Did he give the flower to the right girl?”
“Ah, no, no dear Kitling. He gave the flower to the first noble girl who flourished through his gates, in a carriage made of gold and silver; she received the most beautiful rose and laughed.”
“Why did she laugh?”

Karathos stared as the beautiful Kitsusagi descended from her carriage, the giant rose pinned to her dress of silver and diamond. She sparkled in the torch-light, her hair was laced with spun-gold and her paws were bejeweled in the finest of metals and rocks. She looked at Karathos and laughed, loud and hard and long, until she cried, and her tears turned to snowflakes as they touched the ground.
“What is so funny?” The prince drawled as he sat, patiently waiting the woman out.
“Karathos the foolish! Karathos the vile! Karathos the heartless!” The woman spoke. “I have heard many tales of the witch that visited you in the night- and the three tasks that she asked of you- tell me- have you completed but one of these tasks?”
Karathos did not think, not for a moment of his answer. “I will not be insulted in my own home! Remove this wench from my sight immediately!”
The noble woman laughed again, as his servants pushed her back into her beautiful carriage and she said. “I laugh, because I saw the witch coming up the lane- and you will surely meet your end this night- this rose is the last beauty you had left- and I shall pluck all its petals so that even that shall not remain- for no man to so cruelly reject a woman should be allowed any beauty!” and the noble Kitsusagi left, petals of Karathos’ rose trailing out of her carriage like a bridal bloom.
But Karathos did not understand what the noble woman’s words had meant until the witch arrived at the gates.
“Three simple tasks I gave to you, vile prince. One of beauty- which you did not do. One of nurture, which you did not do- and finally, one of love, which you not only failed but also broke and shattered. What would be your plea? Can you sway my hand from casting your fate?”
Karathos quaked and trembled in his throne, as though so much a child still in his heart and he begged with the witch. “But I sent my servants to the forest and retrieved the finest rose- and I had the finest gardener attend to the rose- and I had my servants give the rose to the first woman to walk through my doors!”
“These tasks were not appointed to your servants!” The witch bellowed, her icy voice washed over the beautiful castle and where it touched, stone began to crumble, books began to age, wood began to sag and the servants fell to their knees, mumbling and shivering in the sudden cold. “They were appointed to you! And you did not lift even a finger, not so much as a twitch- when the first girl walked through your door, you sent her away, and broke her heart as you did her mirror! Have you no heart? Have you no pity?” And as she spoke, the witch began to change, until before the prince stood Tessa, his greatest servant. And then she became a witch again, her eyes full of rage, her heart full of ice. “I am not swayed by your words; I will place my curse upon you.”
Karathos knelt before the witch and begged her, his hands grasped her dress, his words were imploring. “I did not know, please- do not take my beauty. I can find it in my heart to love, I know I can, please but give me the chance!”
But she did not. The witch cursed the vile prince so that his demons might show on his outside and she lined his castle with magical mirrors that could never break and would always show him what he had become.

“He became a monster. A hideous beast, of cruelty and pain. So terrible to behold that not even he himself could stand the sight of his beastly maw. And then the prince knew regret. Then the prince knew pain and sadness and knew that he had been wrong- so very wrong. But it was too late; the prince was cursed forever to be nothing more than a monster. The end.” The grandpa closed the book and stood, tucking the Kitling in more firmly. It did no good- she struggled loose and stared at him.
“What? That’s it? He got punished? What about redemption? What about happily ever after? What about lifting the curse?” Her excited voice carried as she spoke.
“Oh… well… if you must know…” The grandpa spoke with a soft laugh as he sat back down, resigned to telling the girl. “He met another witch who told him that the curse could be broken if he proved that he could love someone other than himself, if he could show beauty, nurturing and love to her, the witch would remove his curse.”
“And did he? Did the witch remove the curse?”
The old Kitsu chuckled. “Yes, but that’s a story for when you’re grown-up. I’m afraid I have to go now, Kitling. Keep warm and go to sleep.” He brushed out of the old chair beside the Kitling’s bed and made his way back outside, where the snow raged and the wind howled. The old Kitsusagi pulled his coat tight around his shoulders and trudged through the snow to the carriage that waited. And inside the carriage, a handsome, yet horrible Kitsusagi sat. His fur was black as the midnight sky; his eyes were amethyst jewels, dark and dangerous. A strange tattoo marked one side of his face, and his smile brought a shiver to the old Kitsusagi.
“So, vile prince, have you said your goodbyes to the light?” The handsome demon asked.
Karathos sighed and stepped into the carriage.
Sometimes the hearts of the malicious should be left unfilled.
