Lola? Guns? What?

Dr. Landford's mind was a jumble of questions and, as a scientist, he worked well when he needed to answer questions. He began by lifting himself up, steadying his wobbling feet against the console.
"Nobody is going to kill anybody!" Dr. Landford said. He tried to force a tone of authority, but was in no position to do so.
"Colonel, Lola is part of the crew, a civilian researcher. She is not responsible for whatever is going on here." Dr. Landford stated firmly.

He had taken cover behind one of the consoles opposite the bridge from the woman Landford identified as Lola. Calbis at the ready, he looked to the doctor for a moment of puzzlement. Unfortunate for the doctor, right now, he was nearly between him and Lola.

The doctor did seem to know the woman, though. Which did attest to some validity. It was highly unlikely that Landford was associated with pirates. Or at least, willing associated.

The next problem was that having a gun fight in a ship was generally a death sentence to everyone. One missed target and it could spell a punctured hull. And if the ship was moving at anything faster than light speed, that could rip the ship apart completely.

Finally, after only a quick moment of time passed, he called out, "Is what the doctor is saying true?"

For once Lola was grateful to Dr. Landford's presence. "Yes, it's true. It's a long and lovely story and I will be more then happy to tell it to you, after we get everything straightened out. But first can we clean up the dead bodies and figure out where we are?" Sarcasm dripped from Lola's every word and made her accent a little more exaggerated; normally it wasn't detectable except by a highly trained ear and only remembered by a scholar.

Dezire had been sitting in the infirmary when the alarms had begun. She had felt the mist and tried to shake herself of it but had collapsed nonetheless.

She awoke to silence. She coughed and stood shakily. She looked at the littering of bodies on the ground around her. She immediately began checking life signs. None of the crew in the infirmary were alive. She cursed and fought back the tears.

"Not again...." she snarled and exited the room, making her way towards the bridge. She stepped in the bridge just as the woman who looked almost like a civilian finished speaking. She sighed, relieved that she was not the only one alive.

"Good idea..." Dezire spoke softly

When the doors opened Lola spun around and pointed her gun at the woman's forehead. The last thing she needed was for someone to try and attack from behind. Silently she used the weapon to motion the woman to walk into the middle of the room next to Dr. Landford.

Dezire nodded and moved towards the doctor, hands slightly in the air. She nodded to the doctor and gave a small sigh.

"Quite a ride we have had...."

Standing slowly, he had his gun lazily trained on Lola. Making no sudden movement so not to trigger a violent outburst, he waited until he had her full attention, then slowly began lowering his gun to his side. An act of good faith, though he was ready to dart away at the first motion of anything hastily done. The gun was still in his hand, but it was not a viable threat at the moment.

"I believe," he began, looking at the other survivor that came into the bridge, "that we all have a tie to each other. I'll accept the doctor's claim on you, Lola. I'll even let you keep your gun under two rules."

He watched her for a moment, making sure he had her attention still. This was going to make or break everything.

"First, you will not use it aboard the vessel. Obvious reasons being that we have no idea what a bullet would do to the vessel. Another being that we've got enough dead people as it is. I'm guessing the rest of the ship looks as bad as the bridge." He frowned a bit, trying to distract his mind from the half a dozen dead bodies laying around the bridge.

"Second, wherever your loyalties fall, they now come second until we figure out what happened and get off this vessel." He was doing what he could to not alert everyone that Lola was, in fact, a pirate. And one of a certain reputation based on her markings. The less those who survived knew about her, the better.

After all, if word got out that she was a pirate, they'd likely blame this whole disaster on her. And, while he wasn't sure that she wasn't to blame, there wasn't any evidence to point to her either.

Lola slowly stood up and let her gun fall to herside as well but her grip didn't slacked. "First off if you think you can get my gun, go ahead and try. One more dead body to pick up means nothing to me." Pausing a second Lola let the truth behind her words sink in.

Second, my loyalties are my concern, not yours. However, since I am stuck on this ship with you my immediate concerns focus around this ship until we figure out where we are and find out what happened. After that I'm gone. I didn't sign up to have a ship attack me. I'll accept the consequences of my actions when we get to that point."

With this Lola looked him in the eyes. "And third, don't presume to think you outrank me. In a situation like this standing on rank won't help anyone because right now I see two civilians for certain, a shrink and one military man. Civilians out-number the military."

Dr. Landford straightened out his uniform, pretending not to listen to Lola's last comment.
"Well, now that everyone has agreed to listen to reason, we need to figure out a strategy for proceeding from this point." Dr. Landford said. He was in a much better frame of mind now that there were other living people here.
"It is quite possible that we triggered a security response in the ship, or that the chemical spray was not even intended to be toxic to the crew. This may be one big accident. I think we should work on figuring out where this ship is going and whether we can regain control. If this was all a big mistake, then we could be headed in a random direction away from Earth at a very high speed." The good doctor ventured. He didn't like the idea of not knowing where they were headed.

Dr. Landford groaned. He hated artificial intelligence...they were hardly ever reasonable...or intelligent. And apparently this one could detect their verbal cues.
"Well, I am open to any suggestions that don't get us killed." Dr. Landford said sarcastically.

He waited for her to finish her rant at him. He quirked an eyebrow at her last statement, though he ignored it. He'd sift through that later. She obviously had something to hide. He made only one response to her, though.

"I never said to take your gun. I said you will not use it." He placed his Calbis back into the holster at his side and at that moment, the AI spoke, ending his train of thought.

He glanced at Landford, who looked very unhappy about this festering situation. Being at the mercy of an alien AI wasn't the most pleasant thought, but suddenly, he figured that the AI must have been dormant or withdrawn from the actions of the crew, waiting for a time to lash out. And, somehow, it didn't add up that only some of them died. Had it selected them, somehow?

No.. that couldn't be it. He hadn't been on board long enough to become exposed to anything that might counteract the spray that had done the initial damage to the crew. Something didn't add up. Were they prisoners or hostages? Or just unluckily in the wrong place at the wrong time with the right circumstances to survive?

"Landford, what can you tell me about the workings of an AI system?"

"The earliest form of artificial intelligence runs, basically, on preset responses and step-by-step reasoning, represented by an algorithm. While some advancement has been made to adapt A.I.s to employ sub-symbolic reasoning in place of this step-by-step process, the fact remains that the computer must compute every possible option and select the most fitting solution. The problem is that complex computation requires astronomical amounts of memory and computational time. Once a problem grows beyond the capacity of the A.I. in question, any number of errors can occur. For the A.I. to have 'heard' us, comprehended our intentions and then select the option of a preemptive warning means that we are dealing with a particularly refined system, like a master chess player who is planning out his next few moves even as we deliberate our immediate plan of action."

Dr. Landford looked around the bridge, uncomfortable and amazed at the same time. This thing had their lives in its hands and it had already taken lives. Even if the initial attack was not intended to be lethal, it was now less likely that the machine would refrain from dealing out more modes of death if it saw that as the best option.

"The real question is: can it learn? If it recognizes new patterns in our behavior, it can effectively predict our own movements. If, however, it can only select from what would have to be a large number of pre-coded response...well, interacting with the computer would be closely related to your method of experimentation, colonel; randomly pushing buttons and hoping it is not the auto-destruct."

Dr. Landford finished his little shpeal and leaned back on the console, thinking.

"What really disturbs me is that it recognizes us as not necessary for ship functions and yet it is maintaining a safe environment for us. Why would it drain its resources and impede progress to its destination in order to keep us alive?" Dr. Landfrod wondered out loud. It did not make sense....it was like a pole-vaulter not letting of of the vault at the climax of his jump.

Lola put her gun away in the small of her back and put her hands on her hips. "A.I. or not it doesn't matter. We don't know how long we were out and frankly dead bodies begin to smell after a couple of hours into decomposition. I think our immediate concern should be dispensing with the crew and seeing who else, if anyone, is alive."

Lola looked around at the deck crew, if she felt any pity, sadness or remorse it didn't show in her face or eyes. "It's going to take two people to carry one and there's a lot of people. We might want to get started as soon as possible."

"You are correct, Doctor Landford, in your statement pertaining to logical steps marked out by probability matrices I have created. Please note that over eighty one possible outcomes have been computed for your survival as well as the maintained upkeep of the vessel. Congruently, as long as no interference is fostered by any of the functional humans on board, the highest probability of your survival will be maintained.

"Of course, this does not factor into external variables to which I am unable to predict. Situations to jeopardize the safety of human occupants or to the vessel will be taken into consideration upon their predicted level of threat to the mission.

"Furthermore, Doctor Landford, my capacity for learning is on par with advanced human neural processing. My added benefit of being hyper-accelerated lends to more precise answers and an unbiased outlook to any situation as all possibilities--logical, illogical, and even hypothetical--can be weighed using a system of algorithms, simulated tests, and past experiences. The initial manufactured design of my matrix was primitive. Through experience and exposure, I have risen to be quite adaptable to extreme situations.

"Lastly, Doctor Landford, the necessary resources to maintain a hospitable and survivable environment incurs an upkeep percentage of total ship resources equal to point zero seven two percent of all available resources on a sub-time piece system of measurement. At our current capacity, this vessel can continue its current speed and sustain human life for eighteen point three years before needing additional resources to continue.

"Lola, the duration of time humans were unconscious was two days seven hours forty-seven minutes. This time sample taken as a collective group from last to become unconscious to the first to regain consciousness. After the initial measure, it was noted a massive loss of life followed. To counter the decay of human organic material, a secondary mixture was released in the air to prevent decomposition."
